“Beautiful lodge in stunning surroundings.”
Reviewed 28 October 2013

This was a perfect place to extend our visit to the Aberdares. The lodge is charming, with beautiful buildings and gardens, lovely decor and a wonderful ambiance. The rooms are spacious and attractive, with fireplaces, comfy chairs and impressive bathrooms. We had adjoining rooms, and spent a lot of time enjoying the privacy of the patio outside our cottages. The buffet breakfast and lunch are substantial and varied. We especially enjoyed the evening meal served in a gorgeous wood-paneled dining room with huge log fire. The swimming pool was enjoyed by the children. The mini golf was closed, but there was a golf course, horse-riding and a game walk in the sanctuary (for a fee). Around the grounds we spotted impala, giraffe, warthogs, baboons and even a honey badger. The bird life is spectacular, not least the peacocks who put on impressive displays to the delight of photographers. Rock hyraxes might keep you awake at night! In all, it was a restful and relaxing respite and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

We stayed at Aberdare Country Club's sister resort The Ark which was beautiful. However we had lunch at Aberdare Country Club which is a beautiful property.Infact we were so impressed by it that we had decided that we would come again with our family again just to spend a couple of days in the resort and relax.
however we may not do so because of the food we had here and our talk with the chef who was so arrogant.
An Indian gentleman (we are of Indian origin too) we gave our suggestion to him that we didnt enjoy the food as much since there wasnt any naan or rotis to which he replied you know cooking for 300people isnt easy and you wont be able to find such food even in Nairobi(which is right in Nairobi I dont know of any hotel or restraunt which serves such bland food). The menu wasnt up to the mark and our kids didnt even eat properly.Even though it was a three course meal it had no taste. The salad bar consisted of just one dressing,no salt or spices.the veg menu didnt have enough choices and non veg food was simply tasteless.Upon requesting the chef to prepare Paneer or good asian veg and naan for our night at the Ark he said I can give you daal and Masala cauliflower but no paneer since Nyeri paneer isnt available(the chef needs to be informed one of the biggest cheese factory of Kenya is in Nyeri and they do produce paneer).Anyhow we definitely wont be staying in this resort just because of the arrogant behaviour of their chef who doesnt know how to talk to clients.

A getaway with my family, niece and nephews. We'd previously visited Maasai Mara, and thought that something a little closer to home (Nairobi) would work better, and it definitely did! Mr. Njue at the reception took great care of us, and went above and beyond what was contracted to schedule a game drive and visit to The Ark - given that we had two very young children with us. Mwai was extremely helpful and attentive to our rather large group at meal time, even ensuring that my toddler had warm milk to drink, and was comfortable (which is hard to do with a 2yr. old!). Deepak the chef was wonderful. The menu for the first couple of days was a mix of Indian and Kenyan cuisine - and Deepak took time out to chat with us, and bonded with our toddler (made easier by supplying him with packets of juice!). The staff customized what was ordinarily offered to guests to make our stay great - the a la carte dinner on our last day was kid-friendly to accommodate us (Fries and Chicken go down well with any age group). The director/owner of the country club was very kind and friendly, and unlike most resorts and locations, could often be seen chatting with employees and guests. I can't say enough great things about the Country Club - we'll definitely be back. Money well spent all around! Bummed that we missed the voting cut-off for the World Travel Awards, Aberdare Country Club definitely gets top reviews from us!

The room was stunning and the bathroom wonderful. The food was fantastic as was the service. Everyone goes out of their way to make your stay as great as possible. We walked around the grounds, did some great birding (Hartlaub's touraco, red cheeked cordon bleu's, red-billed firefinches and peacocks) and spotted warthogs, zebra, waterbuck, eland, bushback and dikdik. We did the horseride, although I found it incredibly uncomfortable, we did manage to get really close to buck, zebra and giraffe. I would recommend booking directly with the hotel and not central reservations. They took forever to get back to us and told us they only had an availability for one night and no availability at The Ark, however when we got there we found out it was not the case and could have easily extended our trip. Definitely include this place on your trip!

The good: Amazing views all around. Too much to take in. Lovely staff at reception. Loved the rooms - crackling fire and hot water bottles in the beds was a lovely touch. Very pretty and huge bathrooms. Sounds of nature all around. Deer, peacocks and warthogs abound. Beautiful grounds - had quite a photo session :)

Great food - the buffet that is. The exec chef, Deepak, is a really nice guy. He told us his mantra is not 'he cooks, we eat' but rather 'what we want, he cooks' and true to his word he made a meal for one of our party whose meal had been a bit off. He made him whatever he wanted (which was not even on the menu) and he checked the next morning that all was well. Very impressive. Great breakfast selection too.

Our waiter sorta had an attitude problem..he really shouldn't be customer facing, but we didn't let that mess up the weekend for us. Will definitely be going back.

First off - food - lovely! Rooms - great! We went for a walk in the grounds with their game keeper. It was our first taste of Kenya and it didn't disappoint with giraffes, impala and zebras. Here's the only negative I had about the place... They sold us a '3 hour game drive' for $45 per person to replace the pre-paid 45 minute drive to the Ark lodge for our next night. In doing so they list a load of animals you can see... Yes, you could see them but its unlikely you will see many as the vegetation is so dense either side of the road that things see a 4x4 coming and jump off the road to be instantly hidden by trees. I kid you not... A fully grown elephant can hide inside 2 seconds in the park... Don't book this drive I you go there, enjoy the nature walk and if you're going to the Ark just take the included 45 min standard transfer.

After the rough safari rides from Nairobi throu Masai mara, and nakuru.. arriving to this haven of Peace ws the best present I could receive from our one week safari! We immediately got into massages, sauna... the steam bath does not function and is not professionally constructed, so one gets water outside the door! But otherwise, the gym is great with all the machines one needs....

We even allowed ourselves for some champagne to celebrate the peace after a noisy hotel in Nakuru!
Food was great, pretty international but weighing to Indian taste....

Our room was clean and we could even make a fire if we wanted with the chimney in the room! The best was that water bottle in the bed!! LOL!! That was unique!!

I am going there again soon! I will take the presidential suite this time! Just to spoil myself!

Room Tip: There are many steps before each cottage... not recommended for weak elderly, limping or wheelchair...

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The Aberdare Country Club, only a three-hour drive northeast from Nairobi, is nestled on a slope of Mweiga Hill in the Aberdare Highlands, part of the Great Rift Valley. This captivating site was selected by an English couple who had decided to settle in the land of their choosing - Kenya. It all happened many years ago; their children grew up there, but then moved on to different places. After almost half a century, their home, "The Steep", was sold and re-named "The Aberdare Country Club". Even though the property was developed beyond the imaginings of the original owners, they would be pleased with how carefully it has been nurtured and the grandeur it has maintained. This is highlighted in Monty Brown's book, "Haven Under the Hill" which says: "Today, despite the fast-changing tempo of the outside world, the old home still retains that comfortable, solid feeling based on traditions from a time when life proceeded at a far more leisurely and gentle pace". The Club's 1,300 acre wildlife sanctuary is teeming with eland, impalas, zebras, giraffes and the more reclusive leopards. It is a haven of unhurried charm set in a garden bursting with a profusion of colour, and with peacocks living within the lush green lawns. Walking through this unspoiled terrain is paradise. Play a round of golf, watched by a family of warthog, or fish for trout, play tennis or just relax by the pool within the beautiful gardens. From here you can see the sunset with the stunning Aberdare Mountains as a backdrop. ... more   less
