The staff here is amazing. They made the trip special in so many ways. Times are tough in Kenya now with the recent spate of attacks and the tourism industry is suffering. Each and every member of the staff here thanked us in the most sincere ways possible to tell us what our visit meant to them. It brought tears to our eyes that their gratitude was so heartfelt. To that end, a visit to this wild part of Kenya will leave you changed and renewed. The park is enormous and as far as the eye can see you are surrounded by wilderness. A must.

Once upon the time, I was told it happened six years ago, in the Park where the soil is red and the male lions have no manes, a beautiful lodge was built and they called it ASHNIL ARUBA.

They put a perfectly designed restaurant there, added a lot of very good food to choose from, topped it with VERY attentive staff and surrounded it with trees full of funny monkeys and lovely metallic birds (Superb Starlings) which try their best to 'help' clear the tables not only of bread crumbs but also entertain the guests.

Just to be on the safe side, they fenced it off with an electric fence so the lions wouldn't eat you up as you observe them or elephants, zebras, hippos, or thirsty antelopes, families of warthogs not to mention hyenas and jackals coming to the waterhole just a few meters away from your verandah.

And they made your large room very comfortable, with a four poster bed in the middle, a very nice bathroom with lots of hot water, toiletries and repellents just in case... When you get back after dinner you find the bed ready with a mosquito net enveloping it, the repellent on, and the lions roaring outside leaving little else to dream of...

To make you believe it is all true I will add that there is no air conditioning and when the generator doesn't work the fans don't either but then even in a fairy tale there must be a bad stepmother...

We stayed here on the first night of our 3 night Safari. We arrived and were warmly greeted and shown to our room quickly. The rooms were basic, a wall mounted fan to keep you cool, etc, but everything that you needed, the bathroom was clean a tidy with a good shower. and besides your not there for the room your there for the Animals right? The lodge is next to a water hole and a savana, at the time we were there, there were some hippos in the waterhole and we observed Elephants and Giraffe whilst looking over the savana.

The grounds are well maintained and you can walk around the compound next to the fence so that you observe any animals that appear.

The pool was well kept, We didn't use it, wasn't massive, but doesn't need to be.

Food was overall excellent, i don't have the strongest stomach but had no issues. Plenty of choice. In the evening we had a BBQ, food was again good. The insects around the lights used was an issue for some, but if you don't like insects, don't go to Africa!

Overall rooms nice, staff excellent and good food.

Overall would not have an issue staying there again.

Great service, especially Henry, and delicious food. We stayed two nights in the tents.. Quite the experience :) plenty of harmless lizards.. They don't bite.. Theres a decent size pool.. If ur going do bring a good pair of binoculars and if ur a photographer bring on ur best zoom lens, from experience 105mm does not suffice. Enjoy ;)

We have just returned from Kenya and stayed at this lodge for 2 nights whilst in Tsavo East. The rooms are lovely and spacious (even the family room as there were 3 of us).
The lagoon was only just starting to fill up whilst we were there so the the animals were a bit limited. Our dirver told us that within 2 days of us being there the lagoon had actually filled up completley and I am sure that would drastically change the out look from you room balcony.
The pool was a refreshing break from the soaring tempratures and made a change for an hour or so between game drives.
The attention to detail was first class when it came to welcoming you to the lodge with staff offering you damp flannels to wipe away the dust that had covered everyones faces from the dirt roads.
Our only gripe with Ashnil was meal times, the lodge was not very full, in fact I think there was only 3 families there on our 2nd night. The food was very well presented and cooked fresh to order instead of buffet, the problem was the infestation of flys that the food seemed to attract, and I mean infestation, you spent your meal times frantically waving your arms around trying to get rid of the flies (there were probably 30 or 40) This gave the staff great amusment, I realise that you cant really odds the flys but the lodge could possibly do more to ensure they dont ruin your meals. It might simply be the time of the year as it was just coming into the rainy season so possibly more flys are about at this time?
On the whole though we throughly enjoyed our 2 nights at this lodge and if we were to visit Tsavo East again, we may possibly stay here again, although there are plenty more lodges in the park.
