“Truly stunning views”
Reviewed 20 May 2014

I stayed here (1 night only) with friends during our safari trip at the end of April and we absolutely loved it.

The rooms are great (large beds, mosquito nets, nice decor, huge bath), the pool is beautiful and the hotel area generally really well kept but the favourite was the huge dining hall with an open wall overlooking the waterhole. I'm sure you've heard lots about it by now but there is really something mesmerising about watching the animals all together. The evening we saw a whole bunch of zebras, dikdiks, antelopes and other hooved animals, and in the morning a MASSIVE herd of buffalo. We were also quite lucky that the clouds parted in the morning and we could see the snowy peak of Kilimanjaro!

The food was another high point. I have eaten some amazing food the week I was in Kenya, but this hotel had hands down the best food.

If I had to pick a negative, I think the walls between the rooms were a little thinner than one would prefer staying in a room next to a couple.

Room Tip: Book a wake up call in case any of the big five venture down to the waterhole! Don't trust the...

The oldest and an amazing hotel in Tsavo National Park, we stayed here three nights during a trip between Nairobi and Galu for a safari. As soon as you enter the area, you know its something special, we arrived around lunch and immediately enjoyed the afternoon dishes outside on the deck watching the animals take turns drinking in the ponds outside. The rooms were great, but you do have to deal with Monkeys running on the roof if you're on the second floor, ultimately it just sounds like rain. I would stay up late many nights on the back deck and watch the animals come to the pond, giraffe, zebras, elephants, gazelles, and of course monkeys. It seems they were trained to take turns, as they would come in, stay about 15 minutes and rotate out. The staff was very helpful and friendly, the rooms and common areas are immaculate. On the safari we visited the inspiration for Pride Rock, which you can order a special sunset meal (thanks Lilian), bit hit for kids and adults alike. You're also right in the middle of the park and on safari we saw about everything we could imagine, even a small pride of lions and a cheetah first day. A plug for a great guide as well, check out Visit Africa Tours out of Nairobi, and if you're lucky enough for a guide named Sammy, you're in great hands. He knew all the spots and made every trip out from the lodge unique. Check out the Lava Flows (armed guard required to leave the vehicle, which was fun for the kids).

Hats off to the great people at Kilaguni, we'll be back i hope.

Room Tip: If you want pure quiet, stay on the first floor b/c of the monkeys and choose a room on the backside...

We stayed here on the second night of out 3 night safari. We arrived and were greeted by smart polite staff and were shown to out room. This was a bad start, we were on our honeymoon and had booked a double but we were put into a twin! mmm, simple visit to the reception and quick chat to the recepionist fixed that issue, and we were given another room, which was closer to the waterhole. the doors tot he balcony didn't close correctly and left a gap between them, but a tissue being jammed under them to hold them in place fixed that aswell.

The one issue we did have was with the atitiude of some of the staff in the restarant. We came in and sat at a table for 2, and were asked what group we were with on telling them we were told off for sitting in the wrong place. We were never told that we had to sit somewhere specific so how should we know! We were not the only people this happened to either. The food was OK, a decent choice and cold and hot choices and good quality.

The overwheling plus point to this lodge however is the fact that it overlooks a waterhole that gets well used by alot of animals, sitting in the bar at night looking at it we saw about 20 Elephants, Zebra, Giraffe, Gazelle, Baboon amongst others without having to leave the seat excellent!

The pool was a good size and well kept, downside was that there wasn't anywhere near enough places to sit/lay around the pool, when we got there after lunch, everything had gone.

Overall a nice place, and the animals made the stay amazing, some staff can be a little err brash, but others were very polite and friendly.

i would stay there again.

We had a lovely lunch at the lodge before heading to our accommodate in Lake Jipa, but ended up getting stuck overnight in the bush and sleeping in our car. The next morning we were able to dig the car out, but were completely covered in mud. Even though we didn't even have a reservation with Serena, when we arrived in the morning covered in mud they generously let us use one of their rooms to shower and clean ourselves. They couldn't have been more friendly or accommodating!! Thank you again!! Great staff, great services, stunning view and their food is really great.

We stayed one night here on route to Mombasa, and the location is amazing, with views of Mt Kilamanjaro.
The lodge is nicely decorated, with great views of the watering holes that are situated right in front of the restaurant and terrace. The gardens and ground are well looked after, it was a pleasure just to walk around it.
Our room was very nice, although with single beds, but believe it was the last available room as we stayed over at Easter and it was fully booked out. The views from the balcony were excellent, we saw an elephant amble by. The bathroom was well stocked with plenty of hot water.
The food both at lunch time and in the evening was excellent. We had a BBQ for the evening with lobsters and kings prawns, who could ask for more? The staff were friendly and helpful. In the evening there was entertainment by Maasai dancers, which was great fun. There is also a swimming pool, however we did not had time to try it out.
We left after breakfast to travel to Mombasa but enjoyed our all too short of visit.

If you only have time to stay in one place on safari - stay here.

Wonderful location with breath taking views of the waterhole and various wildlife visiting, both from the restaurant/lounge area and a large number of guest rooms.

Very enjoyable drives around the park, particularly early morning. Mzima Springs are well worth an early evening visit, you may see crocodiles and hippos amongst other wildlife.

Accommodation and food are 5*. Rooms large and comfortable. We had a good view of the waterhole from our ground floor patio. Good selection of food for both breakfast and evening meal. I particularly liked the table d'hote evening menu and the drinks were also fairly reasonably priced.

Nice small pool area with pool bar staffed during the day. An ideal opportunity to relax between safari drives.

Room Tip: Ask for a first floor room with view of the waterhole. The rooms nearest the restaurant area have th...
