Hotel La Mira de Madio Rano
Ranked #5 of 11 Hotels in Ifaty
Reviewed 28 December 2013

Great hotel overlooking the laguna, very friendly staff. We have spent 5 nights at the hotel and really had the laid back vibe around there. There are two types of bungalows, the white ones a bit further away from the ocean, and the yellow ones thatched roofed type closer to the ocean and the swimming pool. We took the latter one which came cheaper, but do have a more basic bath room. The view from the thatched roofed bungalows is incredible, overlooking both the pool and the ocean, you could even watch the sunset from your little terrace. The pool itself (infinity pool) is not very big, but for us it was good enough, about 10-15m long. Staring into the ocean whilst lying in the pool, really a nice way to spend your holidays. The resort is one of the last resorts of Mangily, you're almost in Ambolimaïlaka (the next village) and as others describe is, it is indeed a bit of a drive from Tulear. For us it took 2 hours, but as we knew what was coming, this was not bothering us at all. Upside of being situated here is that there are not a lot of people wandering around at the beach, compared to Ifaty itself (we visited the beach there when we went diving). La Mira has a couple of parasols down at the beach as well, very nice to hang around in the morning and a bit less warm than around the pool. Security keeps the kids who hang around to move on. No one tried to sell us anything at the beach during our stay though. So why not give the resort 5 stars? Well, for us, the bathroom, especially the shower was a bit too basic. Next to this, we think that the breakfast is a little bit overpriced, although it's nice (fresh fruit, fruit juice, crepes, toast, egg if you like). And there are no safes, at least not in our bungalow. As we had planned to stay several nights, that means you have to stock up money in Tulear and preferably up to 2 million Ariary in our case. We would have preferred keeping that kind of money in a little safe. Finally, we visited La Mira during the low season, there were only one or two couples beside us, but in high season, when more of the bungalows are occupied, we could imagine the pool and beach getting a bit crowded. But apart from this, we had a very pleasant stay, those views we will remember for a long long time, food was nice and fresh from the pirogue (as for almost all hotels here) and the staff was nice and helpful. Rooms have electricity, mozzie nets and fans plus practical furniture.

A wonderfully relaxing end to our holiday, great hotel with very friendly owners & staff. Our chalet overlooked the pool with views out over the bay and was very clean & comfortable. It was very hot when we arrived and although the room had been left open by evening it was still very warm inside – a quick word with the manager soon produced a fan though. The hotel runs as much as possible on solar power so they do ask that you don’t use hairdryers etc but charging phones & cameras (& fans!) is fine.

There is a nice bit of sandy beach in front of the hotel that is cleared of seaweed regularly and a small “sand terrace” with sun-shades & loungers then, at a higher level, the infinity pool with more shades & loungers, bar and restaurant where breakfast & lunch are served (either inside or outside overlooking the sea, your choice). Dinner is in the main hotel building and all our meals were very good, with nothing frozen – which does mean you have to decide what you want for lunch by mid-morning & dinner by mid-afternoon. I’m not a big desert fan and don’t usually bother but a special mention must go to their chocolate mousse – absolutely delicious.

Security is unobtrusive but very effective – we thought we were alone on the beach terrace one time & a few locals passing along the beach “lingered slightly longer” than necessary but a “guard” quickly appeared from nowhere & reminded that we were on private property & they should leave us alone – apparently the beach itself is public but not the terrace.

We certainly felt that if we wanted anything we only had to ask, for example I noticed that my Kindle was getting down on charge & I’d forgotten to pack the charger for it but again, the manager came to the rescue with an assortment of chargers & leads & eventually took it back to the office to charge on the reception PC. Our stay was made complete when we were kindly invited along to the celebrations for the birthday of the wife of “le patron” on our last evening - very much appreciated.

We spent 2 nights in Ifaty after spending 10 days on the RN7 and 5 days in sainte marie, in honeymoon. The least we can say is that we were expecting much better than that. Location is nice, but really far from Tulear (1h30 of dirt track), food is ok but choice is limited and its price is extremely high compared to more premium places. The pool is a pond (cannot swim) and the beach is really not beautyful compared to other places in Mada. We saw much cheaper, closer and nicer options in Tulear...

Spent here few nights in June. It takes some 90 minutes of driving from Tulear, but at the end, this family run hotel was real treat for all!

Actually, the feeling that all the family is working here, seeing the owner (french man that has married Malagasi woman) with his cotton-de-tulear dog following him, seeing his wife having a dinner with all the staf in their kitchen... all that is something that simply force you not to notice some small "minuses".

Very good food can be enjoyed in the restaurant, from lobster to all kind of fish and crabs.

There is also one thing - it would be nice when they would change in some part of hotel those cold-lightening saving bulbs with the same ones, just with warm light. It would change the atmosphere very much!

Beach restaurant was not opened when I stayed there, it would be nice to be able to have some refreshment while staying near a pool or on the beach.

Not far away from hotel there are a few "private" baobab forests that can be visited.

All together - I would be happy to be able to come back here again!

After 12 days of a different hotel every night we landed in La Mira for 3 nights and by all means we had the best food ever. Even better than a meal we had in Tana with a renowned chef. Every meal was a delight. Just sitting on the room patio at night was a pleasure. The gardens of baobabs are delightful. Our rooms were super comfortable and the staff were so kind. Highly recommend this hotel.

We spent several nights in this delightful hotel at the end of our holiday. The staff were charming and helpful, the food good and the setting superb. The chalet rooms were clean, light and airy and the view over the ocean quite magical. It will be even better when the pool and beach bar are finished.

Room Tip: Take plenty of ariary with you as payment is in cash only. Prices are higher than in some places an...

Once we had got there on a very long and bumpy road we found airy, comfortable rooms in a beautiful setting. A new pool with beach bar/restaurant is being added which will make the facilities even better. Sadly there was a medium to strong wind most of our stay there which is apparently a feature of this coast from time to time. This prevented us from sitting outside and going in the sea as much as we would have liked - and there's not a lot of other things to do in the local area.
