Originally we wanted to stay at Paya Beach which is right at the beach front, but it was fully booked, and the travel agent recommended Paya Resort. We read the reviews here and felt a little apprenhensive but had already booked a room. When we arrived at Paya Resort, we were pleasantly surprised that although it isn't near the beach, it isn't far away from the beach either. There is a bridge just a few steps away from the resort's restaurant that brings us to the beach. This stretch of the beach is away from the Paya beach crowd and is also nearer to an outcrop with good snorkelling site. We are glad that the corals here are thriving and we saw a big ribbontail ray. We felt like we had the whole beach to ourselves. We walked to Rock Falls, which is right behind the resort, for a refreshing dip straight after snorkelling. We stayed two nights, the room was clean and basic, the air-con and the hot shower were working very well. The chalet-liked rooms were set in a spacious compound and it was always windy when we had our meals at the restaurant. Their dinner set - rice with tofu, vegetable, fish, fried squid rings and soup, was a good deal. Breakfast was local food in buffet style. Overall, nothing fanciful but good value for money if what you're looking for is a good base with a laid-back atmosphere and a good quiet beach.

We've had few trips around and after spending some time in Sentosa (supposed to be a resort) my friends wants to go for some real beach and wants to have fun snorkeling and scuba. We want to go for some not so commercial place and we went to Tioman.

To reach Tioman we took the Coach (Bus) from Singapore and it dropped us at Mersing from where we took a Boat and it's about 1 hour 30 min journey. Speed boats are available thought slightly expensive.

We've to walk through mangroves and while walking there is power cut and the bell boy lit a small lantern and showed us the way. We're a bit concerned but when we reached the room our fears went away. it's tidy, Air Con working fine, TV is there but little channels, Iron box and Hair blower was there as well. We fresh up and went for our dinner. There is a restaurant and we asked them to serve some thing spicy. It took a couple of beers and half a KG of sugar to get the chilli out of all corners of my mouth. I guess they must have put a ton of red chilli (They call it Chilli Padi). After that we're served some nice fish and rice. Food was ok.

They have scuba PADI as well within the hotel. Also they arrange some tours for snorkeling. Return we took the speed boat and came back to Mersing.
The total cost for us is about 50 SGD for night and we shared the room so it's quite cheap I can say.
There are some other expensive hotels as well but as we want a short & cheap holiday this hotel suited and met our purpose.

We made a last minute decision to go for a short getaway to Tioman and since most of the other resorts were fully booked, we end up taking this resort. When we reached the place, we were taken aback when we were usher from the beachside along this "kampung" like pathway that crosses the mangrove area to the resort. However when we reached the resort, the chalet seems to be clean, althought the ammenities given reminds me of those found in the early 80s. There is only 4 TV channels but if since u spend most of the time outdoor, then TV is not important. Overall, as we are not the choosy traveller so the place is still ok. But if we had a choice, we would definately choose the other resort "Paya Beach resort" which is much more modern.
