Berjaya Tioman Resort - Malaysia
Ranked #6 of 19 Hotels in Pulau Tioman
Reviewed 9 October 2012

our group was fairly large, and was in the resort for some business and recreation. the travel was easy and stress free from kuala lumpur into the resort by Tioman Air. Golf course was tight but enjoyable, with mix of forest and coastal courses. breakfast spread is excellent. rooms are large and comfortable, even if aging a little. but clean. hotel staff speaks good English, and are helpful.
turned out to be a enjoyable and productive weekend.

We had some mixed feelings. As the last resort we visited in Malaysia we expected a little bit more from Berjaya Tioman. The location is beautiful but the resort is a little bit old and the rooms are kinda old fashioned. We had a nice few days at the pool but the beach was full of shells so that was not a nice place to be. We upgraded our room because the normal rooms aren't worth the money. But the food at the asian restaurant was superb and the location of the resort is marvelous!

Just returned from 4 days 3 nights a trip from 29 - 2 Oct. Sign up for the package with Five Stars Travel.

Took bus for 5 hrs to a port in Malaysia, then a boat ride for close to 2 hours before reaching Tekke which is the nearest ferry terminal to the hotel.

The hotel has pick-up and drop-off to the ferry terminal only for check-in and check-out. Food options in the hotel are limited so the hotel should arrange for transport to Tekke. In addition, the Chinese seafood restaurant near the ferry terminal is much cheaper compared to the food in the hotel. It costs us RM70-80 for 3 people when we ate there on 2 separate occasions but we had to take a taxi at the entrance of the hotel that costs us RM20 back and fro.

We stayed at a Superior Chalet near the pool. It's important to stay near the pool if you are keen on swimming. The gym is pretty old so don't expect too much. Breakfast is quite standard.

We took 2 trips from the tour counter at the lobby. 1) Trip B - Coral Island/ Snorkelling Tour for 6 sites and 2) Trip E - The Waterfall Jungle Trek. Would recommend both. The snorkelling tour is a good way to see all the main snorkel sites. The best of the 6 sites was actually Renggis Island as there are more to see. Remember to buy bread to feed the fishes. The snorkel equipment provided was quite new so I'm quite happy with that. Please make sure you bring sea-sick pills.

The trek is actually up the mountains behind the resort. A fantastic way to see the rainforest but please wear long pants and trekking shoes. Requires stamina and not for those who hate exercising. The guide, Mr. Salem is a knowledgeable man.

Overall, good resort that provide good activities except for the lack of transport options to any place outside the resort.

Dear Valued Guest,

Thank you for choosing to stay with us and also for taking your time to pen the review and recommendations based on your recent stay with us.

We are glad to hear that you have enjoyed your snorkeling and trekking session. Encik Salam is one of our knowledgeable associate when it comes to nature and trekking.

Complimentary transportation is provided for arrivals and departures by Berjaya Air and Bluewater ferry services only. For other requirements, there is a small counter located outside the resort which is run by the local community.

Thank you once again for your feedback and we hope to see you return in the future.

We stayed at Berjaya as we got a very good deal and it wasn't peak time. We don't normally stay in resorts but we thought why not! This was a huge resort with lots of good facilities catering for families which wasn't our thing. The rooms were very disappointing and may just make it ot a 3 start rating not the 4-5 start they say they are. They were clean but old and falling apart. We had ants in our bed but they didn't bite, they were just annoying. The buffet breakfast was fantastic and it was very quiet. The beach bar is gorgeous but the tables weren't fixed so several people upended their drinks accidentally. The restaurants are the usual prices but if you just go outside the gates of the resort there is a great basaic restaurant on the beach. The food here is very good and very cheap if you can get the owner motivated enough to cook. He seems to be a bit aloof unless you are a woman. Tioman is not a place I ever wish to visit again and I was very disappointed that they call it a marine park when there was rubbish in the water and ont he beaches. There was rope tied to coral that had just been cut and left there and the snorkelling is beatiful so it was a real shame. The locals need to be educated and shown how to look after a marine park. It could be a fantastic island but the restaurants and shops just dont' open if they don't fee like it and the only decent accomodation was at Berjaya. We tried a few places but were very disappointed.

The ferry is a nightmare and often overloads. We were told that there was a ferry stirke and had to be off the island by Friday. It took all day to get off the island and bakc to Mersing due to misinformation. This is supposed to be a 2 hour crossing! Mondya was a public holiday for the locals so they wanted all the tourists off the island by Saturday. In other wrods there was no ferry strike and we have had this happen before in Thailand so we knew what they were up to. They are not an overly friendly people, even when you can speak their language as we could. Think twice before coming here. There's a lot of other beautiful places to go in the world.

Room Tip: We had a bungalow at the back of th resort with about a 100m walk to the beach. It was for couples...

Dear Valued Guest,

Thank you for choosing to stay with us and also for taking your valuable time to pen the review based on your overall trip to Tioman Island.

The resort was built over in stages and it was meant to be a 4 star offering facilities like dive, golf and etc. The mock up of the new Superior Chalet is almost completed. The first phase of refurbishment should start later this or early next year for 28 units of Superior Chalet.

The resort does seem to attract more families this year probably due to the slides at the pool and the playground. We are terribly sorry to hear about the ants in your room. This had been highlighted to the Executive Housekeeper and our pest control contractor, Rentokil as well.

We are glad to hear that you find our breakfast fantastic. The bar tables at the beach bar have since been modified. We had been informed that the Marine Department of Malaysia (which regulates and monitor the ferry passenger) intervened and the strike was called off at the last minute.

We thank you for the feedback and apologize for the shortfall and distress you may have suffered due the overall experience with your trip to Tioman Island. Thank you once again and we hope to see you return in the future.

Sincerely,

Michael Tan

We stayed on after a short conference, so managed to get a good feel for the property from both a business and family perspective, over 5 days.

Our over-riding impression was that this is an extremely well run property. The staff are well trained, and seem happy in their work - we had some very nice interactions. I was particularly impressed when I mentioned that my bedside lamp wasn't working to Benny at the main lobby - a maintenance man was at the door when I arrived back at the unit 5 minutes later. It was operator error - he was very sweet about it :-) Everything was like clockwork - room service, billing, food, activities - the whole 9 yards. The clientele seemed well pleased, a mixed crew of seemingly well heeled Europeans, Australians, Singaporeans and Malaysians, and plenty of family groups.

There's everything here that resort people will love - hot and cold running buffets catering to all tastes (the food wastage must be incredible), two decent pools, facilities for big and little children, great snorkelling in the marine park, fab spa for those who want some pampering, and the odd interesting visit from wild life (we saw monkeys, a large water monitor, and some beautiful herons in addition to all the beautiful tropical fish), bicycles for hire, diving and all manner of water activities - but thankfully not jet skis.

The beach is clean and the water clear. Hopefully the rest of the island hasn't fallen prey to the usual environmental malaise. Which is of course is what resorts are all about, one is hermetically sealed from the world and fully able to indulge oneself - we didn't venture outside, as there was no reason to.

Couple of things I must make mention of - the beach bar, with charming barkeep and great cocktails to watch the sunset by; and the spa - massage and facial was a delightful experience - highly recommended.

The accommodation is standard, superior and deluxe. We stayed in a standard chalet, which is half a separate building. If you can find a resort map on line, see if you can score a unit close to the main restaurant, which will save you some walking (although it is good for you!) The unit locations seem a well kept secret, however, Berjaya might want to think about publishing this information in their maps, as it's really hard to figure out where you are and where your friends are in relation to that.

One caveat: BEWARE if you have mobility issues. The property is huge, the chalets are sprawled over a wide area, and hiking to the restaurant/ lobby/ bar/ etc would pose a challenge the infirm. The staff very sensibly get around on golf carts, motorcycles and bicycles - perhaps transport could be arranged, if not, then I'd be a bit wary.

Overall I was highly impressed. For resort people this is a great choice, everything is there, the location is gorgeous and easily accessible from KL and Singapore via a short flight (wouldn't recommend the drive as it's around 4 hours ex KL plus ferry - too hard), and once you're there it's all effortless. The conference also proceeded on oiled wheels according to our Gentle Organisers. Great job, Berjaya Tioman!

Room Tip: They're sprawled at all points of the compass ... the 800 series from memory are closest to the...

Having just returned from from the Berjaya Resort I cannot praise it high enough. The staff are very friendly, the rooms very comfortable and clean and the food was very good as well.
This island is well served by Berjaya Airlines so access is easy.
The round the Island trip is especially worth the while and not expensive, about 24 pounds for the day.
I would also recommend the Spa, a standard massage was great.

Room Tip: We stayed in room 524 and were very happy with the location of this room for all the services on sit...

Set on a wonderful beach on a paradise island, with the best snorkeling a stone's throw away. Some of the chalets not the most attractive, and set away from the beach, bordering a road, but beachside chalets beautiful. Simple furnishings. Good pools, gym, spa, excellent very helpful and professional staff, especially Joe, food and beverage manager, who is a huge asset to the hotel....very friendly and helpful, yet very professional. An unexpected bonus was the quality of food....superb food at the a la carte Thai/Indian restaurant ...lovely surroundings and service and very well-priced.
Look forward to returning in the future!
