“A paradise on earth”
Reviewed 21 July 2011

A very nice hotel with a lot of comforts and very good facilities.
We had a two floor room in the jungle spacious with a nice bathroom from where you could see the jungle. Also an outdoor mini pool where you could relax and sometimes watch the monkeys very close to you.
The spa was very pleasant as it took place in an open air room from where you could relax and hear the sea.
The two restaurants were excellent with good service and food.
Do not miss the spa in the open air room.
The only negative was that on the beach they had very few sunbeds which where never available only if you would wake up at 7 in the morning.

I took my wife for a surprise visit to Tioman for our 10 year wedding aniversary recently, and it was incredible. We flew from Singapore which was painless, and were met by a small boat for the 15 minute trip to resort...the only way in and out is by boat. The greeting was friendly, and we were shown to our cabin up on the hill at the back. It appears rustic but is actually quite luxurious, with all the amenities you need, including an outdoor spa. One thing we noticed quite quickly about the resort was that it is all couples, no kids (I think there was one baby), and everyone keeps to themselves. The food is fantastic (choice of 2 restaurants for lunch and dinner), and I certainly recommend getting a massage. One thing that stands out is the staff have discovered the balance of providing enough attention to service your every needs, but not too much so they are in your face all the time.
If you want a place to take the family, spend time with friends or make new ones, or fill your day with activities, then this is not the place for you. If your looking for a special time with your other half, then I would highly recommend Japamala!

Room Tip: Get a massage!

My husband & I were looking forward to a romantic weekend getaway at Japamala, but our experience was an utter disappointment. The resort is overrated and over priced for the service that you receive. When we arrived at the resort, we were greeted by a staff who to be honest, could smile a little bit more. Next thing we knew, there was no electricity for a couple of hours as they were trying to fix the generator. Plus, there is no internet & phone in the room. Service in general was just mediocre. With only 13 chalets, I feel they could make it more personalized such as remembering guest's names or make brief conversations during meals.
The 'sea cliff' room is tiny with very poor lighting in the room. Furniture was old and needs some upgrading. There were a lot of bugs & lizards, and to top it off, while we were relaxing on the balcony having our afternoon snack, a monkey just jumped from the trees to our balcony & kept staring at our food, charging forward. We quickly closed the door but it just sat out there for a good 5 minutes before disappearing into the jungle again. No one warned us of the monkeys when we arrived!

The pavilions on the beach were always occupied since there are only 3 of them. If you don't get them early, you'll end up on straw mats which was so uncomfortable. No doubt the waters are crystal clear, but there are too many dead corals which make it unpleasant to just dip by the beach.

Guess the one positive thing to comment on is the food. We had Italian at Mandi-mandi restaurant on the first night and Vietnamese/Thai on the second. The food was awesome...the only thing that kept me satisfied.

Understand it's trying to portray a 'rustic' feel. If they are willing to upgrade their infrastructure and most importantly, improve on staff service....it will go a long way.

My husband and I stayed here for a week for our honeymoon and we had an amazing time. When we arrived at Tioman airport we were greeted there by a member of staff who took our cases and led us to the speed boat which would take us to the hotel. He provided us with a cold drink each and a cold flannel each which were very much appreciated.

The food in the 2 restaurants was so tasty and very well presented. My husband had a catch of the day on the first night and although it could be considered expensive for Malaysian prices it was beautifully cooked. I liked watching the local fishing boat dropping off their catch every day...you can't get fresher then that!!

The service was excellent. I found the staff friendly, professional, attentive and nothing was too much for them. But they weren't on top of us either and fussing around. The atmosphere there is very relaxed and okay they didn't refill our water bottle throughout the day but all you had to do was call on someone who was walking past, which happened often, and they were happy to complete your request. I loved the fact that in the morning when we were laying on the beach someone would bring over a plate of fruit for us and in the afternoon they would offer us a sweet snack. The staff, Mike, John and James to name but three, were friendly and personal but not overly so which is good as I consider that to be extremely professional and I'm not there to make friends, I'm there to have an amazing holiday which is definitely what they provided.

On the night of my birthday they set up a quiet table for my husband and I and baked us a cake. And on the last night they did the same again and gave us a bottle of wine for us to celebrate our honeymoon. The staff lit lots of candles all over the hotel in the evening which was very romantic. And at night when we returned to our room following dinner the room staff would have turned the bed down leaving us a chocolate each and lit candles and incense. And on our final night they made a big heart with flower petals on the bed.

The reception staff arranged for us to go diving on 3 of the days we were staying, organising the transport to and from the diving centre. We really enjoyed the diving, seeing turtles, plenty of fish and also nudibranches. The dive centre attached to Japamala was good with the staff being friendly and knowledgeable.

We had a tree top chalet which was really nicely decorated. We really enjoyed watching the monkeys through the window whilst laying on our bed. There was a big TV, an iPod docking station which we made full use of, DVD player and some basic satellite channels like Star movies. I agree with one of the previous reviews about the DVD collection consisting of some, quite obviously, pirated DVD's and that the hotel should really be buying originals as it is unethical and sometimes the quality of them isn't very good and also considering the prices of DVD's in Malaysia are actually quite cheap there's no excuse. The bathroom was lovely but one criticism is that the toilet seat needed replacing as it had a crack across one side.

All in all we had a wonderful stay and we fully intend returning to celebrate our anniversay in a few years time.

We stayed 4nights in Japamala in April to celebrate my 50 th birthday and our wedding anniversary..........it was the perfect paradise to celebrate our special days!!!!!!!We stayed 3 nights in a wonderfull tree house and one night in a jungle lux sarong which we were not so impessed by......we were supposed to stay in the jungle sarong
for 3 nights but Bell the manager was an angel and moved us back to the tree house we loved staying in!!!!The tree house was Fantastic, perched in the middle of the jungle up on the Hill with a magnificent view of the Aquamarine sea........we slept with the Windows open and heard all the sounds of the jungle mixed with the sounds of the sea........wonderful!!!!!The room was luxurious with alot of special small touches to make it exclusive but still very cosy. The resort itself is magnificent....great location, beautiful secluded beaches, two beautiful restaurants and a Dream of a spa!!!!! We tried a 3 hour romantic spa for 2 which was just perfect on our anniversary.....2hours of massage and 1 hour in a fantastic jacuzzi overlooking the sea in the sunset, while drinking champagne and enjoying a chocolate fondue.......we thought we were in heaven.......we were pretty close. While we were there Bell and the massage ladies had decorated our room with flowers on the bed.......so thoughtful and so romantic. For my 50 birthday the waiters in the restaurant arranged a private dinner on the beach with candles and lanterns and fantastic service.......they Even made a wonderful birthday/anniversary cake for us......Made our special days so wonderful!!!!!! We spent our days walking and lazing on the beach, swimming in the silky warm water and snorkeling. When we were hungry or thirsty we swam out to the Italian restaurant on the jetty and were served by always smiling and friendly staff......they had wonderful pizza!!!!Thakyou to all the wonderful staff at Japamala for making us feel so welcome and for helping to make our stay fantastic!!!! Special thanks to James and John and the other waiters, to Bell and the massage ladies........to the guys who kept our room in order and spoiled us........Hope to see you all again soon!!!!!! We stayed at the Seacliff chalet for a weekend. Given that it was a very hot weekend, the air-conditioning was always switched on in the room and to the credit of the hotel, I did not see, hear or otherwise notice any mosquitoes or flies in the room. However, I was very badly bitten all over my arms, legs and torso each night and upon returning home, saw a doctor for the itch and inflammation. My bites manifested as several bites clustered together in a line, which is typical of bed bug bites (as opposed to mosquitoes or sandflies). The doctor I saw also said that the bites are likely to be bed bugs.

I am a frequent traveller in Asia, especially to tropical beach destinations and I do not usually complain about or react badly to a few mosquito or sandfly bites. This experience was different. When told about my experience, the hotel dismissed the bites as sandfly bites and reassured me that the beds are vacuumed every day.

Discerning consumers, the choice is yours.
