“Fantastic japamala”
Reviewed 23 April 2009

Have recently stayed at the Japamala Tioman and have to say I LOVED IT. I cannot fault anything about the hotel, the staff are just wonderful, very personal service as there are only 10 or 12 rooms, the setting is one of the best I have ever been to, food is exceptional, 2 restauramts for only 12 rooms, WOW, a fab Italian and a beautiful Thai with Vietnamese and Laotian cuisine also, thoroughly recommed the Lobster, its fantastic, cheap and fresh. Rooms are wonderful, recommend seacliff chalet, we had number 15 and loved it. Well equipped, great bathrooms, lovely ammenities in the room incl all mod cons such as ipod player, air con, well stocked mini bars etc. Yes it is bit of an effort to get here, flight on Berjaya air from Singapore or Kl, then a 20 minute boat transfer to the resort but really that is what makes it all so special and it is well worth the effort, Tioman has no roads so everywhere is by water, very unique and what makes Tioman so special. We spent days sunbathing, relaxing and snorkelling, saw rays, huge Moray eels and even a shark, yikes. Good spa on site with lovely staff. If you want all action packed resort Tioman just isnt for you but if you want stunning natural beauty, great service, great food and wine and time to chill out you will love japamala, it has a similar feel to Bonton in Langkawi but difference is this is on a beach. Very boutique and absolutley lovely, we will be back without a doubt and for longer next time, we had 5 days on this visit and could of easily of doubled our time here, thanks to all the wonderful staff who made our stay so special, cant wait to come back again as soon as we can.

I use tripadvisor all the time and always mean to write a review but never get around to it, well this time I promised I would. We travel alot and like nice places and attention to detail so I tend to be very particular in my choice of hotel. Well this one is truly fantastic, the staff are wonderful , it is a hidden gem. The food is great, cooked to order, the cockails are also great. The rooms, we stayed in treetop and sea cliff and they were both beautiful, with lovely little touches and attention to detail, lovely aromatic turndown at night, The spa is lovely and the treatments are very good. We have 1 child an 8 year old daughter who had a fantastic time, it was her favourite place of the entire holiday. The snorkelling is great just from the jetty, its a lovely place to spend some time relaxing and beautiful to eat at night under the stars while sitting in the ocean . Just check out their website it does really look like that, with freindly excellent service, we will be back.

We have just returned after a seven night stay at the JapaMala Resort.
There is no question that the setting is idyllic and with only twelve rooms the whole resort never seems busy.
The view from the beach is poor when the tide is out, as all you can see is dead coral - it is a shame to see so much coral washed up onto the beach. When the tide is out, the beach on the far side of the jetty is picturesqe and more secluded - a great place to hide away.
We had a Sarang jungle villa (No.4) with the plunge pool, balcony and sun verander - these villas are not suitable for the elderly or young children as the walkway through the jungle has no handrails, as is lacking on the stairs from the lower to upper floor of the villa. It is also quite s steep walk up from the pool area.
The Sarang villas are also privelige to a complmentary room service breakfast served on the balcony. Thwey also have a DVD player and a seperat TV lounge downstairs.
The food is of good value with good size portions, and even if the hotel is full, there are enough tables in the Tamarind so that you will never hyave to wait for a table. Wine costs are on a par with UK restaurant prices - with a good selection of european & new world wines. The menu did start to become boring towarsd the end of our stay.
As stated earlier, we spent seven nights here, and on hindsight I think five nights would have been just right.
There is building work on the other side of the jetty, butI did not know it was there until I walked by on the beach - this is not a problem.
We have been to malaysia many times and I have never seen water so clear - snorkelling is great off the end of the jetty.
Sun beds - this is a big problem, as other reviews have stated, there are not enough beds to go around if you want to stay on the beach. The early risers get these beds and keep them all day.
So, would we go back? Yes, but only for a few days, and we would probably want a sea view villa. It is the small things that let the hotel down - frayed towels - towels not changed daily - some staff lacking in knowledge of there role.
Would also recommend flying in with Berjaya Air (1Hr flight from KL) - beats a 4hrs car journey.

We spent a week at the Japamala and felt like we had been away for a month.
The resort is beautiful, simple and understated, small and quiet - it really was paradise found!
Sat on it's own little beach and backed by Jungle, there is no where to go and nothing to do but relax, read, swim or snorkle.
Fabulous food from a choice of two restaurants, amazing private rooms with plunge pools and stunning bathrooms, incredibly friendly staff and a beach that rarely has more than one other couple on.

This is five star luxury, but not in the formal crisp sense that you would expect from a large hotel, this is all about the setting, the calm, the serenity, and the friendliness of staff that will remember your name all week.

With only 12 rooms, there are never many people around making it a perfect get away retreat.

Spend a few nights there to really get in to the swing of things!

We had Jungle Sarang with pool - completely private and not over looked so you can bath out side under the cover of trees with monkeys running by!

Luxury!

I have just got back from 2 nights at the Japamala resort on Tioman Island.

i live in singapore and my girlfriend in the UK. She cam to visit and we wanted to go away for a short break to relax and chill out. living in Asia there is so much choice and we kind of stumbled across Japamala.

We are very glad we did!!!

From the moment we arrived the service was impecable. Every member of staff was friendly and attentive. We stayed in the cheapest accomodation possible - a 'tree top chalet' and it was superb. Great room and a good size. Being in the rainforest you are going to get a few bugs, but nothing of any note.

The other plus (if you have an indecisive girlfriend) is the fact there are only 2 restaurants, 1 Thai and 1 western. The food is great in both and not too expensive. I mean it isn't cheap, but for an island paradise it is not too bad.

I thoroughly recommend the place as well as snorkling at Renggis Island, we saw a ray and a small reef shark, amongst many colourful fish.

For a short break (40 min flight from Sing) i definatley recommend Japamala Resort on Tioman.

Wow, am I glad that we stayed here. It is by far the most beautiful resort I have ever stayed at!

Japamala Resort is located in Tioman Island with beautiful beaches and amazing modern/rustic lodges. Upon arrival, you will receive a grand tour of Japamala. Our room was amazing with the bedroom as depicted below. At the platform of the bed was a plate of fresh fruit and an authentic snack waiting for us. Next to the bedroom is a TV nook with a mini bar. The vanity room was light with the natural sunlight coming through all the window. Outside the vanity room an outdoor bathtub.

The best view of the resort was from the beach pavilions. There were three pavilions with two lounges in each. Although, the beach is quite rocky (from coral), the was water is clear and it is a great place to snorkel. The most beautiful part of the beach was by the big boulders on the other side of the reception. You have to see it to believe it!

Thank you for reading, happy travels!

We spent 3 nights here in a jungle villa and it was amazing, apart from the constant noise of building work going on. They were constructing some new villas and before we booked I noticed a note at the bottom of the booking form that informed guests that work was going on. So I called the office and spoke to them about it. I was told that they wouldn't use mechanical tools and it would not be noticeable. The villa they were constructing was very near to our villa and work started at 8.30am. They used a compressor to power nail guns and they also used power saws. The work was also very near to the pool, so you couldn’t really relax by the pool and in fact no one did, which meant that the platform beds on the beach were all full. If this work had not been going on this would be the most amazingly relaxing place as there is nothing around it for miles and the only way to reach it is by boat.

The noise aside, we had 2 babies with us. One aged 8 months and the other 26 months. I wanted to book one of the tree houses as they looked so great but the man in their booking office informed me that they were not suitable for children because of the stairs up to them are dangerous for children. I think that must be what the reviewer from Singapore must mean who talks about it being unsuitable for children. Our 2 year old loved the place and I think older children would have an amazing time here as long as you haven’t wrapped them up in cotton wool. We took our 2 year old up to see the tree houses and it was a bit scary as there are no guides also there are no guides on the pier out to one of the restaurants and that was a bit scary even for me coming back in the dark after a couple of glasses of wine.

For our room they suggested the jungle villa, which was lovely and very close to the pool and not many steps. It was the right suggestion. The staff are lovely and they were great with our babies. In fact, I left the 8 month old with a couple of the staff in reception while I ran to get something from our room. When I came back the baby was asleep on the lady’s shoulder and was covered in a blanket. She wanted to keep holding her incase the baby woke up when she put her down.

The food is ok but outrageously expensive. My partner had a fish that cost more than in a Michelin starred restaurant in London. She said it was ok but it was not as nice as most of the other fish she ate on other islands or at a street market in KL. You can’t really go wrong cooking a fish! The breakfast was fab, lots of lovely fresh food and a cooked breakfast to order.

Unfortunately, you are trapped here so have to use their restaurants. A boat to and from the town costs more than a meal so is not worth it.

We would come here again, with our children, as it’s impossible for us to go without them. There were a few honeymoon couples here and our babies didn’t disturb anyone. We took a baby monitor with and this worked in the main restaurant, as it was close to our villa, so we got the babies to bed and then went and had supper.
