“Memorable Stay”
Reviewed 9 August 2014

I was there with my friends for two nights. I must say that the Resort Manager, Mr Zuresh made our stay a memorable experience. He have arranged for us for the island hopping which one should experience the outdoor activities. The superior room we stay is spacious and clean. The resort landscaping is beautiful even though it is a dry season, the plants and grass are green as the gardener have done a good job. Food & beverage is average, which need improvement. Should have a 24hours room service. The Pool is beautiful but should provide more deck chairs. Overall the resort is well maintain. All the resorts management in Tioman should seriously discuss with the ferry authorities about their punctuality and also the limited seating as it is time constraint waiting for another ferry, which you need to arrive earlier to get a seat.

Room Tip: Second floor have better view of the resort and beach

The place will not hurt your holiday nor will it make it memorable. What works for the Resort is the beach front, bigger land,Convenient transport but what does not work is there is no access to other part of Tioman except the overpriced sea taxi services. The restaurant has a very limited menu and you may probably get bored in two meals itself. The breakfast was good ..no complaints. One serious improvement needed is the communication skills of the frontdesk staff,They need to be more open to provide information about the island and the tours available. The staff was barely able to answer for info requested.

I can't think of any words to describe my stay in this hotel. First the ferry transfer was never on time, freezing cold, and when we arrive at the hotel around 3pm, hungry and tired we were told no restaurant open and we can
not order until dinner. We book the suite room, ended up a major disappointed. The entire room is needs a general scrubbing and cleaning. The bed sheet has stains and looks filthy, the furniture have holes from cigarette burns, there's an army of ants crawling around the room. On our second day, at breakfast the waiter who attended to us smells beer and very unfriendly, actually all the staff are very unfriendly. We requested from the Front office to make up our room while we are out only to be back to learn the housekeeping didn't come and they can only do it same time we came back to refresh. Dinner time is another disaster, nobody greeted us when we came to the restaurant and was not given a menu either. We wanted to have some cakes for dessert and was told the chiller is close and they don't have the key. No words to describe how lazy, unfriendly and horrible the staff and service at this hotel. I stand there looking at a staff raising his voice to one of the guest. It's just horrible horrible horrible!!! Pls do not even think to stay at this place if u don't want to ruin ur holiday. We were there for 3 days and the whole time the pool is closed. Boat transfer going back is a disaster that people have to muscle
their way to get a seat. Overall,it's not worth even a single penny I paid for this hotel.

We take feedback seriously. However, for us to take any feedback seriously, we have to establish if it is bona-fide feedback. If you wish for us to take your feedback seriously, please write to customer.service@payabeach.com with your full name, voucher number, room number and date of your stay with us. Thank you.
We have had a wonderful 2013 and have been blessed beyond what we could anticipate or imagine! We are deeply thankful and honoured by the wonderful guests we have been blessed with. As much as we try to bless our guests by providing good comfortable and clean accommodation, excellent food and informative, fun and most importantly safe Activities, we unwittingly find that we are in turn blessed more. Having received more blessings, we are able to bless our other guests even more and it has really been a wonderful experience for us in 2013. We look forward to having the honour and privilege of being hosts again to so many of our repeat guests; many of whom have become personal friends whom we, the owners, catch up with for lunch or coffee.
We aim to make our resort a value for money and affordable 3 star beach front resort for guests to enjoy the abundant blessings of nature around us. We have had a new professional, responsible and competent Management Team since October 2013 We appointed a professional hotelier of more than 20 years as Resident Executive Director. He is assisted by another professional hotelier who took up appointment as Resident Resort Manager. This new management team believes in actually getting things done and not solely use diplomacy to solve guest issues. They have a good track record of being able to effectively manage and lead a staff of workers. Most importantly, they are also able to administrate well which improves effective communication between staff, departments and management. With their experience and educated minds, they are able to discern fact from fiction. Reckless, exaggerated irresponsible venting from genuine constructive feedback. They have been instructed to ignore feedback unless a legal name, address and voucher number to prove bona fide guest status is provided. Any feedback or reviews written anonymously by a pseudonym has no place in a Court of Law as such reviews are not admissible as evidence against staff. As such reviews are not recognised in law for facts, our managers have been advised to follow the wise and good practice of the Law and ignore such reviews.
Our senior management team takes good and authentic feedback seriously and are mature and secure enough to realise that they are not perfect. They are also professional and experience enough not to be hackled by anonymous reckless and wild reviews. They have the authority and mandate to make real rectifications be it the physical structure or our operations or administrative systems. There is no need for them to adopt the proverbial mindless lip service of "humbly apologising" for the sake of convenient public relations just for a fleeting moment and just to please some cockalorum who is given pseudo power of the pen by travel review websites. While having much to unscramble since mid Oct 2013, they have been able to establish their SOP's since mid Jan 2014. We have every confidence that guests in 2014 will most certainly reap the benefits of their professional management and leadership of the resort's staff.
As we are fair and reasonable employers, we abide strictly by the Labour Laws of Malaysia. The Labour Laws of Malaysia require reasonable proof of any infringement of Laws or underperformance of standards by all staff working in Malaysia. In accordance to legal advise, we wish to state that none of our staff's remuneration or employment terms are affected, positively or negatively, by reviews written on unregulated and unauthorised internet travel reviews, websites or forums as long as authors write under a pseudonym. As a result of the Law, we purpose not to react or tweak our splendid facilities or efficient operations by reviews written here as this is not our official feedback channel. Instead, we are indeed deeply grateful to all those who write reviews here on tripadvisor about our excellent and wonderful resort, as all of you, by your individual reviews, have blessed us with the wonderful privilege of presenting the facts and truth to all the many other readers of reviews here on tripadvisor. By your own hand, you have allowed us to tell everybody how wonderful our resort's facilities and services actually are. For this honour and privilege, we are deeply grateful for your blessing.

Comments about Activities or our Beach.
Our objective is to make ourselves not only a value for money 3 Star Beach Resort, we aim to make our hospitality experience affordable to as many as possible so that we can share the blessings of nature that we have been endowed with.
Rental for snorkeling equipment are priced at value for money and affordable rates. Our masks and snorkels are for rent at USD 2.20 per day, Life Jackets at USD 2.55 per day and flippers at USD 2.20 per day with each day defined to be the period between 8am and 8pm on the same calendar day.
Our waters are warm, ranging between 26-29 degrees Celsius, turbidity low with currents manageable (do check with our Activity Desk Guides for local and actual information on the day you snorkel). Tioman Island is a granite island. We have a nice beach which is cleaned twice a day of debris left behind by irresponsible people. We never want to interfere with nature and hence our beach is home to many beautiful and interesting wildlife which can been seen during low tide. Due to a flattish seabed, the intertidal zone is quite large so you would not find coral life for the first 50metres from the beach. Beautiful and colourful coral thrive after that and are found from the rock structure right in front of the resort and to the island (Tomok Island) on the right of the resort. The Rocky structure right in front of the resort is home to a family of black tip reef sharks who are accustomed to visits from our many guests. We have put up pictures of beautiful colourful fishes and corals in Tripadvisor for guests to view. Hawkbill turtles, Lizard Fish, Trumpet fish, Damsel fish, Wrasse, Parrot Fishes are aplenty and if one is quiet and respectful of nature, available in full visual splendor for our guests. There are Butterfly Fish, Batfish, Fairy Basslets, and the occasional moray eels. Blue spotted rays and even eagle rays are sometimes seen in the area between the rock feature in front of our Deluxe Chalets and Tomok Island. Anemone Clown Fish are the delight of many of our younger guests. There is a platform which we have put up for our guests to rest while snorkeling. In the vicinity of that platform, Shovelnose Rays or Raysharks have been photographed. Sea snakes like , Sea Crates, Banded Sea snakes, Coral snakes are sometimes spotted too.
The Tropical Rainforest neighbouring our resort is home to many animals that are endemic to Pulau Tioman like the Tioman Blind Walking Catfish. Macaque Monkeys, Bats, Flying Squirrels, Monitor Lizards, are all native and found in the Tropical Rainforest. Beautiful Birds of Paradise, Sunbirds, Water Hens, Hummingbirds, Ospreys, King Fishes, White bellied Sea Eagles and many beautiful butterflies like Common Blue Butterflies, Swallowtail Butterflies are abundantly available for visual splendor. Snakes like the Reticulated Python, Sunbeam Snake, Grass snakes, Palm Vipers, Paradise Tree Snakes, Cobras, Vine Snakes, Oriental Whip snakes and Dog fish Water Snakes are some species of snakes that may be spotted for the keen eyed.
Beautiful trees like the Banyan Tree, Willow Tree, many species of palm trees like the Giant Palm, Natural fruit trees like the Custard Apple Tree, Durian Tree and Mango tree are all abundantly available for those who are keen naturalist. Different species of ferns like the Jungle Fern, Peacock Fern, Dragon Scale Fern, Leather Fern and many different fungi with prominent meristems are found in the Tropical Rainforest right at the edge of the resort. Herbs and plants like the Tapioca plant, Ginger Plant, Chilli plant, Curry plant and Pigeon
Orchids are found in this beautiful Rainforest.
We have a daily complimentary presentation and guided walk by our biologists to the Mangrove Swamps and then to the edge of the Monsoon Rainforest up to the rockfalls. We also have a daily complimentary snorkeling equipment familiarisation session in the afternoon at our snorkeling pool and scuba diving pool. This is followed by a complimentary presentation of the marine life thriving in our nearby waters and a complimentary guided tour of our House Coral Reef. All these complimentary guided tours are exclusively for our valued and treasured bona-fide guests.
. There is a movie room where we show a complementary movie for our guests. We have free WIFI available for our guests at our food outlets. If you are in a group, you may have complimentary use of our multipurpose room (subject to availability) but a charge for Coffee and Tea on a per head basis is payable. Minimum number is 40 persons. Complimentary Indoor Board games like scrabble, Uno etc are also available for our guests. Beach mats are available for rent as these are so much more comfortable instead of using your bath towel on the sand. Ball games like volleyball are also complimentary.
Kindly contact our life guard certified guides for tours to view these blessings of nature found in and around Paya Beach Spa and Dive Resort. Rooms - New Management
Pest Control of the Whole Resort and Rooms.
We engage a professional pest controller who advises us on best practices to eliminate ecological systems conducive for pests to thrive and breed. They are appointed for a tidy sum so their professional advice is taken very seriously. All their advice is incorporated into our SOP's for all our departments. Staff who do not adhere strictly to the SOP are dealt with fairly, equitably and strictly by the provisions of the Labour Laws of Malaysia. In addition to best practices, the Pest Controllers also do regular bi-monthly maintenance. They come and lay poisons and chemical and physical bulwarks to pests. We have a written understanding with our professional Pest Controller that they are professionally liable for any loss of reputation suffered, provided that is good and reasonable proof of the presence of pests, if pests continue to interfere with the peace and enjoyment of our guests.
Power Blackouts From National Power Supplier - Emergency Lighting and Electrical Generator Sets
There are frequent blackouts on Tioman Island due to a very erratic and unpredictable National Power Supply Company. For the sake of our guests, the resort has invested more than MYR 500,000 in electrical power Generator sets located onsite at the resort. The Generator sets are able to supply enough power for all rooms and facilities at the resort. Everytime there is a blackout, our Generator sets which are professionally serviced and maintained, our maintenance team, is part of their Standard Operations Procedure, ensure that the Generator Sets take over the task of providing electrical power to all rooms and facilities and outlets at the resort. In addition to that, there is emergency lighting installed all over the resort and in the rooms so that guests are not caught in sudden darkness. Rest assured, despite the many and frequent power outages on Tioman Island, Paya Beach Spa and Dive Resort has invested heavily in capital, maintenance and spares no effort in ensuring that water and power is available to guests despite the frequent blackouts from the main National Power Supplier.
Nature Friendly Practices
As Paya Beach Spa and Dive Resort is keenly aware of the need to be friendly and protect nature, we strongly encourage our guests to save electricity wastage. To show our part in this endeavour, we have invested heavily in ecologically friendly room key lock system which disables power supply to the whole room when the card key is taken out of the card key socket in the room. Each room has a specific computer generated random security code and unless the socket verifies and tallies the code set by our front desk upon guest check-in, the door will not be unlocked and power will also not be supplied to the room. No other replacement card can be used unless it has been verified by our front desk personnel as the door and the socket must tally with the computer generated random code set by our front desk. If any guest wishes to have a second card key, we charge MYR 20 per room per day for the second key. This is done to protect our environment and we would appeal to all our guests to support this endeavour of ours.
All guest rooms are serviced daily but we would encourage guests to decide for themselves if they wish to be part of the global effort by responsible people to be friendly and protect our environment. If our guests wish to be part of this responsible group of people, we will support your gracious, responsible and wise decision by not changing towels unless they are left on the floor in the bath area.
A Brief Description of Rooms
We have 6 room categories each catering to guests with different disposal income. At the most basic, we have less than 20 beds at our Standard Lodge. Each single sized bed costs USD 12.60 per night including breakfast. There are 4 beds in each Standard Lodge Room and each room is airconditioned with ensuite hot water showers and toilet. Next category up is the Standard Chalets which sleep 4 adults comfortably. Appointed with 1 Queen sized double bed and 2 singles, each airconditioned chalet has an ensuite hot water shower room and toilet. The Superior Sea Facing rooms are the next category up from the Standard Chalets. These sleep 3 adults with one adult having to sleep on a pull out single sofa bed. There is a Queen sized double bed which sleeps two comfortably. Again, these airconditioned rooms come with ensuite hot water showers and toilets. The Superior Beach Front rooms are airconditioned and each come with ensuite hotwater showers and toilet. Each Superior Beach Front room is located right at the edge of the beach and is appointed with two queen sized double beds which sleep 4 adults comfortably. Next up are the Deluxe Chalets. Again located right at the edge of the beach, these are a favourite with families. The fullly airconditioned chalets come with one master bedroom with ensuite open air shower and toilet. The master bedroom has a European King sized double bed sleeping two adults very comfortably. This is also good for couples with a young child who is used to cohabitate with parents during sleeping times. There is a single pull out sofa bed in the hall which leads to the balcony which gives a wonderful view of the sea. There is a bath room with bath and toilet attached to the hall. This area can sleep one adult only. There is also a cozy attic bedroom which sleeps two adults comfortably on a queen sized double bed. The deluxe chalets sleeps 5 adults comfortably. The fully airconditioned Deluxe Suites are most luxuriously appointed with an open air hot water shower, hot water jacuzzi and toilet attached to the master bedroom. All these open air jacuzzi and showers allow a wonderful view of the ocean. The master bedroom again is appointed with another balcony which gives a wonderful view of the forest and Mount Kajang. There is a European King sized double bed which sleeps two adults very comfortably. This is also good for couples with a young child who is used to cohabitate with parents during sleeping times. The hall is appointed with a single sofa pull out bed and a queen sized sofa bed which sleeps 3 adults comfortably. There is a separate ensuite hot water shower and toilet to the Hall of the Deluxe Suite. The Deluxe Chalets and Suites come with a mini fridge. If guests of other room catergories wish to have a mini fridge in the room, a charge of USD 8 per day. Deluxe Suites and Deluxe Chalets come with complimentary bottled water which are replaced daily.
Except for the standard lodge, all our rooms come with a TV with 4 channels available namely, Discovery, ESPN, HBO and CNN. All rooms except for the Standard Lodge come with complimentary coffee and tea making facilities and set. All rooms including the standard lodge come with mini pantry with hot water kettle. We urge all our guests to boil their water before drinking for hygiene reasons as that is just plain common sense.
Movie Room, Wifi and Multi-purpose Hall for Guests
There is a fully air-conditioned movie room where we show a complementary movie for our guests. We have free WIFI available for our guests at our food outlets. If you are in a group, you may have complimentary use of our multipurpose room (subject to availability) but a charge for Coffee and Tea on a per head basis is payable. Minimum number is 40 persons.
All Rooms Serviced Daily and Brief Description of Room Service SOP
All Rooms are serviced everyday and we will provide fresh towels and linen during the service. If you feel that you want to do your part in helping the environment, we applaud and encourage your thoughtful and considerate intentions. You may inform us that you do not wish for your linen or towels to be replaced. We will however still service your room. Our linen and towels are no more than 6 months old and we replace them regularly. Strict hygiene is observed and all the linen and towels are washed in antibacterial solution after they are soaked in dilute chlorine for at least 15 minutes. All linen and towels are then machine dried at with the temperature set at 75 degrees Celsius. Your bath rooms and toilets are washed with antibacterial solution and when there is a change in guests, all the toilets, wash basins, WC, Showers, baths and Jacuzzi are treated with chlorine to prevent cross infections between guests.
Swimming Pool and Pool Deck
We have the only TWO pools in Paya Village and these two pools are for the exclusive use of our bona-fide in-house guests only. Together, they hold about 265,000 litres of water. The swimming pool is 1.4m deep while the snorkeling cum scuba diving pool is 2.4meters deep. Both are situated at the Seri Kajang Wing. One is a swimming pool while the other is a snorkeling cum scuba diving pool. The snorkeling cum scuba diving pool is meant for our bona fide inhouse guests to get familiarized with the snorkeling equipment and for our Scuba Diving Centre to conduct PADI accredited Scuba Diving Courses in a safe confined water environment where the students are able to stand up with their heads above the water should they be uncomfortable at any time during the Snorkeling or Scuba Diving Lessons. Our Activity Guides are all Life Guard certified and trained and our Scuba Diving Centre has PADI certified and licensed Scuba Diving Instructors and Dive Masters.
Our adequately sized swimming pool in our resort is controlled by an automatic chlorinizer. In addition to that , the pool is serviced everyday. The chlorine reservoir is checked and the water condition for pH, residual chlorine is analysed each day. Part of the servicing includes clearing the water of debris through vacuuming. Our water is not green but blue. The pool deck is serviced and cleaned each day. Our pool is not an Olympic (50 meters) sized swimming pool with 8 lanes across. It is not meant for competitive swimming training hence the lack of need for such a pool. We do not hold any professional or amatuer swimming competitions at our pool. Most of our guests do not come to this Tropical Island Resort for competitive swimming training . Complimentary Beach and Pool Towels are available from our Activity Centre.
We thank you indeed for your review and for the opportunity to inform our guests of the facilities available for them. You may follow the latest events and get a good feel of the culture of Paya Beach Spa and Dive Resort on our Facebook page.

Comments about our Front Desk
New Management
Resort Manager and Staff
Our Front desk is staffed by professional well trained staff who speak more than one Language each. All are fluent in written and spoken English and one other. The Front Desk is the core of the resort operations as that is the onsite guest feedback and communications centre. To make your stay more enjoyable and pleasant, we strongly encourage you to approach our front desk staff if you have any enquiries or feedback for us. You may also ask to speak to me, the Resort Manager and I will be there to speak to you personally within a few minutes as I am always contactable by walkie talkie. You may make your reservations for BBQ upgrade and Spa Sessions at our Front Desk.
Professional Security Service from Professional Security Vendor and Cashless system of Payment for All Facilities at our Resort.
We have invested heavily in payment systems at our resort to make all payments safe and secure, cashless and convenient. Room keys are electronic card keys and this same card key is all that guests need to make payments at our resort for any food or beverage or any activity they have signed up for. When the bill is presented, all the guest needs to do is present the card key and the waiter or front desk where all activity signed up for is paid, will present a print out of payment amount and room number after the card key has been used to initiate payment by that room number. The guest only needs to sign on the bill and that would authorise payment by “bill to room”. All payments are made during check out at the front desk and payments may be made by cash or credit cards. Cheques are not accepted. Any reasonably educated person would see that there is absolutely no need for any of our guests to carry cash around with them while at the resort. All valuables should be kept at our complimentary deposit box facilities. If what you wish to safe keep is larger than the normal security box provided for each room, we have a SAFE to store bulky items. An authentication procedure has to be followed by that is just to ensure that there is a record of the item being stored with us in our SAFE and when it is retrieved, acknowledgement that it is now safely in the custody of the owner is all that is required for good order and controls.

For the well being and peace of mind for all our guests. we have a professional security company manning all aspects of security at our resort. We also provide security deposit boxes for all our bona fide paying guests. We strongly encourage all our guests to use this complimentary service available at the Front Desk. This is for the peace of mind of our guests so that you have a good holiday and not bother with writing vehement, wild and scurrilous allegations of theft here on tripadvisor and also for us to not have to write pages of explanation here at Tripadvisor why a guest lost any of their personal belongings when they could have just utilized the complimentary safe deposit box service.

Check-In and Check Out Time
Due to the wide open spread of our rooms which give our guests wide open spaces, and in consideration for the guests who are checking in, our official check-out time is 10am and the official check-in time is 2pm each day. Where we can, if there are requests for late check-outs, we will most definitely try to accommodate. Preference is always given to guests with young children or very old folk. If we are unable to accommodate a late check-out, we have an airconditioned movie room where guests can watch a movie and rest in comfort before they decide to leave. For the sake of good order, if no request for late check out is made or any request denied due to our high occupancy levels, then any guest who is inconsiderate of others and checks out after 10am and before 11am unilaterally will be charge an additional half a day's room tariff. If such a guest checks out after 11am, a full day's room tariff is levied.
Security Deposit
All guests are expected to provide a security deposit of MYR 200 per room. This is fully refundable during check-out if all bills and obligations, including property damages are legally and fully paid for.

We thank you very much indeed for your review as you have provided us the opportunity to inform readers here at Tripadvisor of our Front Desk staff, functions and professionalism. I selected the resort knowing full well it was a three star accommodation. We felt that the landscape was most important, and didn't wish to stay in an overdeveloped resort.
That said, we knew to expect semi friendly service and acceptable lodging.
Our room was satisfactory, despite a broken toilet. Two maintenance men came to fix it, and we left for dinner. When we came back, the toilet and bathroom were covered in water.
We slept okay, the bed was tolerable and aside from the bathroom debacle, we were otherwise not disappointed with the room.

The wifi set up was hilarious- several connections to select from, with none really working well for long. It was almost like a game to jump from one connection to another, but honestly it's a tropical island- what should we expect? One of the reasons I picked the place was for an advertised wifi. My husband is always expected to be available and needs access to internet that is working, and this part was frustrating for him. Management: please explain on your website that it's not great wifi. :)

There's a beach bar with a pool table! That was super cool, despite the less than friendly bartenders. We went twice that weekend for a beer each.

The food was ok, lots of wonderful fresh fruit as the highlight. All food comes from the same kitchen, and it was plain to see the chefs work hard. I ordered the "Lobster Thermidor" off the menu and was told they weren't serving it yet, that it was a new menu. That was odd, why have something on the menu you don't know how to cook? The food we did get was just fine. Breakfast had several loaves of bread (black bread) and myriad jams, and several hot options that were not really to my palate. There was an egg chef who was very nice, but the eggs didn't suit my western taste. Cereal was a good choice!

The staff was hit or miss. Some were the nicest people ever, while others treated us as if we were an imposition. The attitude was not one I would accept from my staff were I managing a resort. We asked for no special room or food requests (save for the broken toilet repair); two of the front desk women were sour pusses with us, not friendly at all- like we were impositions upon them. This is something I was prepared to expect, as other travelers experienced and reported on it in Trip Advisor. Not sure why they weren't nicer.

However, the activity center was a delight! We truly enjoyed our guides and loved snorkeling. We went to the free jungle tour- that was a major disappointment, but because of the other guests (shouting during the awesome educational movie and guided tour). Eventually we asked the guide if we could have a private tour, which was arranged and worth the money!

Cats all over the island, many in heat. Some were fighting over territory by the restaurant, with a couple guests kicking at them (astonishing cruelty).
I saw a very injured cat with a huge gash in it's chest and knew there was probably no vet on the island. The young lady whom I pointed the cat out to showed concern, and I was touched. Hope the cat's ok. I wish there was a way to neuter the cats or better care for them, but I'm an idealist.

We made a point to visit to the spa- it was incredible! We got the couple's massage, it was the BEST massage in my life. Afterward, they served us the most delicious tea. Really lovely people working there, so kind and gracious (unlike some of the front desk staff).

The natural scenery was stunning, but throughout and also at Paya Beach Resort, it was very dirty in places (notable- by the pool it reeked of the nearby toilets; maybe plumbing was an issue that weekend?). That was pretty gross, and if you looked over the fence or in the flower pots there were cigarette butts OVERFLOWING, and empty booze bottles all over the place. It seemed only some areas were maintained, others severely neglected and essentially like a garbage dump. NOT Acceptable from any resort in paradise! Clean it up!!!

Our room and the restaurants were clean enough (aside from the toilet odors).

However, the part of the island we visited is like a damn garbage dump; we could NOT BELIEVE how much trash was strewn everywhere!

Cigarette butts and empty cigarette boxes in the sand, broken glass and plastic bags on the beach, thrown away shoes and all matter of debris in the jungle. It made us very, very sad and angry to see that! How can people not care?

I don't entirely blame the resort, but hope the management can help create some sort of precedent or incentive for guests to have more respect for the island, have additional staff? Have a "No tolerance for littering" policy?

I don't know what kind of waste disposal program Tioman Island has, but hope it gets in order before it's completely ruined. People just have no regard for their surroundings or the last pristine places on the planet; it's beyond disappointing to travel halfway around the world only to find that people just don't care about the ecosystem. I can't recommend the place or the island in good faith, knowing what's happening to it. I certainly do not want to encourage other people to go there and mess it up, or have their stay marred by those that do.

It is heartbreaking to see paradise so disregarded.

That, the toilet, and the few rude servers, and other guests aforementioned were the worst parts of what could have otherwise been a beautiful stay.
I've camped and don't need things to be luxurious (though that is nice), and at the minimum require that people take care of nature, especially someplace as special as Tioman Island.

I wish I could give the place four stars- but there's a lot of clean up to manage and a few service issues to iron out. Littering should be fined.

Had stayed at this resort in end June 2014 for 3d2n. Average feel and acceptable. Do you wanna pay high price for those higher-end resorts like Japamala or low-end kampong hut like those in ABC or Salang. The best comparison would be a 1star lower to Berjaya Tioman.

The choice of hotels/resorts in Tioman is actually very limited to a few per village location. There are not many choices in Tioman to be honest.

I went for mid range and need a clean room with basic facilities, eventually end up with Paya Beach. My review will be based on hotels I stayed before in Tioman.

HOTEL RESERVATION
Had booked this resort from their website, not online but website request and email submission, directly to their reservation staff. They replied via email confirmation with a PDF reservation voucher. IMO, this is the proper process of reservation, so that you wont end up with mixed up reservations. No one wants to end up arriving at the resort and someone at the recep to tell you your reservation is invalid or got mix up. In my previous stay at Salang Indah, Panuba, Berjaya, it was done via phone call reservation. It's all based on mutual trust. I'm sure some lower end resort will even ask you to pay a min sum to their bank account as deposit. Do you feel safe to transact this way? The reservation in Paya Beach Resort is direct, although not online, they will revert to you, asking for acknowledgement of credit card number payment.

HOTEL'S FERRY RESERVATION
Due to peak season, I had booked ferry tix via this resort, so-called online and PDF ticket voucher is issued and send to your email. Cost me $10 extra at RM$80 pp. You can also buy at the Mersing Jetty on the day of the departure but it really depends on ticket availability, you can buy straight off ferry counters at RM$70. At the jetty, there is a counter (no2) where you can exchange your printed voucher with the actual tickets so that you can board the ferry. Separately, all visitors need to pay for marine fee and it cost RM$10 pp, to be purchased at a counter nearby. Foreigners to pay RM$25. (A tip here, if you are local-like, just buy RM$10 marine fee ticket for locals, as the custom officers don't check your passport, they can't tell if you are foreigner. This tip is applicable only if you are local-like.)

If you are going to Paya off-peak, just buy ferry tickets on arrival. If you are going to Tioman during peak, it may be safer to buy either directly from ferry booth or through Paya. Ferry booth agents may want to collect from you deposit (which I think is worrying).

ROOMS
Booked the Beachfront Superior Chalet (Twin Sharing) which is located at the new wing of the premise. Deluxe Beachfront is directly above the beachfront superior chalet. The swimming pool in this new wing is still under construction. In fact the entire new wing is in construction (80% completed). Only the beach front deluxe and superior chalet is in use and available for stay.

The room is clean but not without problems. For RM$400 per night, it is quite expensive. There is no safe box in room, no bar fridge, no wifi in room. The sink in the bathroom is poorly maintained and water from the tap drips like hell. The room has 2 queen size bed though which is good, hence can sleep 4 adults. Tip : book for twin sharing and pay for twin sharing price, but can sleep 4, avoid telling recep you have 4 in room. There is a LCD tv in room with aircon. Room lighting is dark, cant read in the room. The door lock is a big problem. The sliding door is a very general key lock, meaning one can use the same key to lock/unlock other room doors, therefore do not keep valuables in room. Room service is acceptable and they do clean your room. This is important bcos in other hotels which I do know, after you move out, they do not really change the bedsheet, blanket, etc. Here at Paya, they do change.

The room has an unblock view over the beach. The view for the first 6 rooms (near to restaurant) are great with good view to the sea (Room No 100 onwards), The last few 4 rooms in the new wing has terrible view. Avoid those.

Other rooms in the old wing which if you can manage to book, go for those beach-front type.

RESTAURANT
Lousy food. Breakfast, lunch n dinner inclusive. If u want better food, walk to the resort behind Paya, called Tioman Paya Resort. The food there is 10x tastier and affordable. I had my breakfast lunch n dinner there at the resort behind Paya, every day. This restaurant at Paya do have one good thing, TV screening of football matches, hence at night, it comes alive.

RESORT FACILITIES AND HOUSE REEF
Nothing but snorkeling, diving and swimming at the beach area. RM$60 - 90 pp for snorkeling on a bumboat is quite acceptable. RM$90 if you want a speedboat. I took a private speedboat which I arranged separately with other boatman. The beach is very rocky and not for swimming when low tide. Not many visitors is aware that there is a house reef worth snorkeling, located at the new wing towards the outer island. The house reef there is quite good, only when low tide it is accessible.

CHECK-IN AND OUT
When check-in, they asked for RM$200 deposit and gave me a chit to indicate deposit. That chit, you must keep, otherwise when you check-out and unable to produce the chit, they may not return you but usually they will knowing it is your money anyway. There was a welcome drink. Check out is simple and fast. Do note when waiting for ferry say 9am as stated on the ferry tickets, we waited for an hour, do expect 1 hour waiting time as the locals said. Bcos the ferry starts at 9am not at Paya but at the first stop in Salang and it will take 1 hour to reach Paya.

PARKING
Parked at the Mersing jetty as is the most convenient but expensive at RM$10-12 per day. Was told there is another option, further away to the hospital which is cheaper at RM$3-5 per day.

SUMMARY
I would give Paya Resort higher rating than Berjaya, Panuba, Salang Indah. However, Paya Beach Resort will need to improve on various nitty gritty and keep the cost as low as possible and to have more faciltiies like gymn, more shops, more facilities for visitors.

Room Tip: (A tip here, if you are local-like, just buy RM$10 marine fee ticket for locals, as the custom offic...

This is my worst experience of any hotels that i have stayed across. I have booked standard chalet and the room is pathetic. The AC was not working, besides the room being full of lizard, some even grazing on the floor. We asked the staff to change the room and at first they said not to have any available room. After mentioning that we are ready to pay more surprizingly the rooms just became available and they shifted us to superior charging 35 dollar more.
Whatever we wanted to order from the menu was not available. So the menu may not be the right guide when you look for order.
To our surprize the check in time is 2 P:M and check out is 10:00 A:M. As our ferry was at 1:30 P:M thus we requested them for extension till 12:00 P:M but the reception staff refused to oblige even though most of the rooms on my floor were empty. It is one of the most unruly and discourteous staff that i have ever come across in my stay at any hotel.
Simple advice dont stay in this resort unless you want to spoil your mood.

Room Tip: Choose Superior room

You may follow the latest events and get a good feel of the culture of Paya Beach Spa and Dive Resort on our Facebook page.

Again located right at the edge of the beach, these are a favourite with families. The fullly airconditioned chalets come with one master bedroom with ensuite open air shower and toilet. The master bedroom has a European King sized double bed sleeping two adults very comfortably.

Went to Tioman 5year ago and the resorts remain quite the same. In fact expanded the number of rooms! Some of the rooms are quite old but still clean. Nice scenery and good clean beach where you can have good snorkeling activities just right at your door step! The coral are growing well compared to 5years back. Kudos to everyone for keeping the sea and beach clean!

Food wise-many little shops there sells chinese and MalaY food but do remember the MalaY restaurants are closed during fasting month. Near the jetty there is a fantastic chinese restaurant named Pantai Paya seafood restaurant with wifi services! Just ask the pin from the shop owner

Shopping.-few little allowed you to buy basic necessities and tidbits. Tioman is duty free island. Beer is cheaper than fruit juice.

Stayed July 2014, travelled as a couple
