“Wonderful relaxing holiday”
Reviewed 7 July 2014

We had an amazing week at Bagus place with our children and another family. After the busy, noisy ferry journey from Genting in Malaysia, we arrived in what looked like paradise. We were much earlier than planned, so had 15 mins to wait at the end of the jetty for the speedboat from Bagus (we called to let them know we were several hours early and they came to collect us, no bother) - watching the amazing fish and drinking in the tranquility of the island.
Bagus itself is gorgeous. As they say on the website, this is not the place for white linen and stiffly dressed waiters. It is the place for endless relaxation: no shoes no TV no WiFi. Perfect. The children (age 7) had a fantastic time exploring the jungle, playing on the white sand beach, swimming in the warm shallow sea, playing on the giant swing or watching the monkeys. No iPads for a week!! We went snorkelling with them every day (brought our own kids equipment as there was none there, but plenty of adult items to borrow, plus life vests for the children). We did the trip to Ringgis Island which was breathtaking in its marine life - visibility amazing, I really had seen nothing like it.
The food was delicious, mostly Malaysian but always adapted for children to be less spicy. We had roti canai or pancakes for breakfast every day, along with great coffee. Lunch was salad or noodles or rice or pizza (you could choose) and the evenings were a buffet or BBQ, generally with 3 or 4 choices plus rice.
The staff were very friendly and welcoming, but not in your face and chatting when you just wanted to be quiet. There were lots of little quiet spots around the resort to be peaceful if you wanted it! Or a bar area on the jetty where you could chat to the staff about the island, or about the fish we had seen that day (they were very knowledgeable about the marine life).
Rooms were basic but well furnished (although there was a lack of hanging room/drawer space, but that didn't really matter), the beds were very comfy and the fans and mosquito nets were fine - we didn't miss the aircon. There was a little fridge with soft drinks in the room, and a warm shower in the bathroom.
It was a great place to go as a family, a proper adventure for the children and amazingly relaxing for the adults.

The only downside is I have no idea where we will go next on holiday. This was about as close to perfect as it was possible to get!!!

Room Tip: We stayed in Eagles View which was close to the restaurant and the beach, 2 bedrooms so perfect for...

Go there!!!! Whether you're looking for a romantic vacation or a place to have fun and unwind, Bagus is the perfect choice. The location is gorgeous: a small beach with soft white sand and crystal clear waters set against the background of lush jungle and rising mountain peaks. The accommodations are wonderful, extremely comfortable and uniquely designed. We stayed at Tree House, which is closest to the beach and has an amazing view of the sea. You can lounge on the wooden veranda and enjoy the view, or fall asleep with the doors open to the lull of waves rolling on the shore. At some point in the day a curious monkey or two will visit the nearby trees, and may even sit on your veranda. The flora and fauna around Bagus are a real treat. The coral reefs are perfect for snorkelling, and easily accessible from the jetty (the staff provides all-day snorkelling equipment which you can simply pick up and put back when you're done). You'll also see small lizards, monitor lizards, butterflies, moths, and other small creatures all over Bagus. The reef is filled with fishes, small (and harmless!) reef sharks, and if you're lucky you might even spot a sea turtle in the deep end of the jetty. If you're looking for a more active experience, there is plenty to do: you can kayak, trek to Mukut village and Asah Waterfall, arrange a hiking expedition to the twin peaks, take a 10 min. boat ride to Genting village (where there are other options for activities, souvenirs, free wi-fi, and some small places to eat), or arrange a longer snorkelling trip to other spots on the island. The staff is extremely friendly and accommodating, and the atmosphere of the place is very laid back. The food is also good and plentiful, with both local and Western options. If you're a nature-lover, adventure-seeker, or just a lazy beach bum, Bagus is sure to satisfy. It's a little pricier than some of the other resorts, but it's worth it.

If I was more selfish, I would not write a review, purely to keep Bagus to myself... However, I feel I must be fair and so, having only just joined Tripadvisor and staying at Bagus this time last year, it is time to extol its qualities and compliment Rosie and Vivian on giving my girlfriend and I a brilliant two weeks to remember.

This place offers a perfect getaway from our busy lifestyle. One can choose to snorkel, hike, go fishing or just do nothing. The staff are friendly and ever willing to help. It is self contained and they will provide the meals. The package will include boat transfers. They have 3 boats at your service and have the experience to cater for individual needs

Room Tip: If climbing up stairs is a problem choose the boat house

A great little place with really personal service in a laid back environment. From the moment we arrived to see the stunning location (and cocktail on arrival) we loved Bagus. Each chalet is unique and with lots of little areas to relax and enjoy the surroundings instead of cramming in lots more people. The food was great as well with the best fish i'd had yet. There is still a lot to do as well with snorkeling, kayaking, walk through the jungle to a waterfall, diving or boat fishing etc. for those that can't sit still and just enjoy relaxing :)

We spent a glorious 5 nights at Bagus and really did not want to leave. We arrived at Genting on the ferry from Mersing and were picked up by Rosie in the Bagus speedboat. The speedboat trip was fun and lasted approximately 8 minutes and then we arrived at our final destination….Bagus Place.

First impressions? Jaw dropping. The view from the jetty looking into Bagus and the mountains as a backdrop was so awesome.

Rosie is a fantastic hostess and she and the rest of the other fantastic staff made us feel welcomed throughout our stay.

We stayed in Rumah Laut and were totally amazed by the view, the sounds of the ocean, the closeness to nature and the way that it has been constructed. Wow.

I can truly say that I have never felt so relaxed on holiday and could not fault anything about this resort. The food is out of this world, they offer both Malay and western cuisine and the variety on a daily basis is fantastic.

The Saturday night barbeque is a good touch as is the shark feeding every evening; which makes you feel part of nature’s aquarium!

We snorkelled, kayaked, swam, relaxed, ate, drank and had a blast. The water is azure blue and the sand golden. Paradise. We also went for a 7 mile round trip walk to the waterfalls and enjoyed that immensely.

A slight concern is the resort next door, which is on the large side, the guests there realise that Bagus has the best beach and sometimes come over to Bagus. I could imagine that this could be a minor irritant in the height of the holiday period.

Would we come back to Bagus, yes definitely at the same time of the year. Bagus is in our hearts and it was such a wrench to leave.

We spent 3 days in Bagus, but we would have spent at least seven!!!! Everything was perfect. Chalet respect nature and environment, they are nice and comfortable. So the place where we had meals, the library, and the bar!!!
We stayed at the Rock House and it was terrific to hear the sea below us in the morning.
Meals were great, we tested different malaysian foods all cooked so well.
People there are kind and prepared. We would like to come back again!!!
I forgot, you can do a great snorkeling around the Bagus place and you will see a lot fishes!!!

Room Tip: All the chalet are good, but in Rock house you are "on" the sea!!!
