“One of my favourite places in Asia”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 March 2011

I have stayed at Minang Cove 3 times already. From the reveiws I have read here I would like to explain why Minang Cove is a place that either people love or don't. The rooms are quite basic (I would reccomend staying in their slightly more expensive rooms), and it is really quiet. The food is good and not 5 star hotel standards (I bring snacks along with me when I come).
You should stay here if you love peace and quiet, trekking through the jungle, relaxing swimming and diving. The place truly is somewhere where you spend all day in the ocean or relaxing and reading a book, no television watching, no mobile reception (unless you walk out on the jetty), and is a great place to get away from everything. I simply love that the rooms are basic as it kept my younger brothers (aged 12-14) outside instead of watching movies on the tv.
There is never really anyone around and at night, unlike many other places there are no rowdy drunks at the bar, or loud music playing till 2am. If you want a party holiday, this is not the place to go.
All in all, I love going there, even if it takes me 8 hours of driving/ferry catching if I feel like getting away from everything.

We read about the rave reviews of this resort in Trip Advisor and decided to give it a try.
So in early September, we stayed at this resort for 6 nights and (as is stated in the title) we came away with a most unusual and undesirable experience.

First, a note about us... my wife and I are advanced recreation divers. We have been going for dive trips twice a year for the last few years, mainly in resorts in Malaysia.
We have been to Tioman twice, staying in Berjaya Resort, and Panuba Resort. This is our third trip to Tioman.

Now, our review on this resort...

First, even though we prepaid, we think the boat ride from Tioman Airport to the resort was rather expensive at 100 ringgit per person per way.

The staff was friendly, and they came to the jetty to welcome us.
They took care of our bags, and carried them to our room.

Upon entering the room, we found that there was no lock at the door, and throughout our stay, we felt rather unsafe staying there.
The toilet was not well cleaned before we moved in, and we had to do some flushing ourselves before we could use it.
In addition, the coffee maker had leftover tea or coffee with a layer of white fungus in it and we had to take it to the restaurant to have it washed.

Food was a hit or miss affair.
On our first day, we ordered a 'Chinese' dish for lunch. It was bland, tasteless, and there was nothing 'chinese' about it.
Breakfast had the same limited options every day.
We enjoyed it for the first two days or so, but got a little tired of the selections after a while.
Tea time was mainly one sweet (local cakes, donuts, fried banana, or vegetable fritters) and nothing to shout about.
Most of the stuff was deep fried and too greasy for us.
They serve dinner at 8:00, which was very late for us.
We found ourselves starving for dinner everyday, even after having the oily snacks at about 4:30 to 5:00 pm.

On the good side, the resort was very quiet and peaceful, something that we cherished very much.
We took a walk to Mukut, and were very happy to see several giant squirrels.
The walk was worth the effort.
The beach was small, tiny, and rocky, but luckily, was of no concern to us as we were there to dive.
We went shore diving every day, and the dives were pretty good.
The area around the jetty was a good spot to hang out and watch the fishes.
There were some bleaching of the corals, though.

All went pretty well, until the shock that came after we reached home.
Upon opening our check-in luggage, we found five fist-sized stones in the side compartment that we hadn't pad-locked.
They averaged about a kilogram each.
This is the first time that such a thing had ever happened to us while on a holiday.

We emailed the management immediately, asking for an explanation.

They expressed embarassment, and were apologetic that such a ridiculous incident can even happen at their resort.

They promised to look into the matter, but it has been three months now, and we are still waiting for the follow-up explanation.

To this day, we remain puzzled as to why the five stones were placed into our luggage without our permission or knowledge.

Well, this is the experience we had with a so-called 'paradise' in Tioman...

Having just returned from a week’s holiday on Tioman Island, I can honestly say that I’ve just spent it in paradise! Minang Cove is a very special place, set on a beautiful island and surrounded by stunning scenery - it really felt like we were living in the jungle at times!

When 8 girls descended on the resort, I’m not sure the staff, or the island knew what was about to hit them! Even though this is a place that is popular with couples and families, the staff at Minang Cove welcomed us with open arms and made our stay an absolute blast! We arrived in the last week before they close for the monsoon season which meant we more or less had the whole place to ourselves. The weather was as you would expect it to be at this time of year, a mixture or scorching sun, thunderstorms in the evening and a couple of rainy days. However at no point did this detract from the holiday, if anything it only adds to the wonderful atmosphere of the island. The sunny days were spent sunbathing at the end of the jetty and the overcast days spent with a book in one hand and plenty of Singapore Slings in the other! The amazing spa treatments also helped pass the time....

There were some unforgettable memories - from the day trip around the island, the very special birthday party and our last night spent having drinks on the jetty under the stars. All moments that were made even more special by Tony and his fantastic staff who could not do enough for us. Our snorkelling instructor Craig was an absolute professional and made my first diving experience one to remember!

The chalets we stayed in are lovely and were kept clean at all times and the food is out of this world! I knew I was in heaven when on our first night we had a BBQ with whole crabs on it!

There is no mobile phone signal on the resort but you soon realise how irrelevant that is, I even stopped wearing my watch after a couple of days. This is a place to fully relax and unwind which means not having your phone is a god send. If you want a holiday that will leave you talking about it for many years to come, Minang Cove is the perfect place to stay.

We were picked up by boat by the hotel staff at ABC, who then took us to Minang Cove. We had only booked a weekend there, and wished we had stayed longer. The staff was very nice and attentative. Great service! The hotel and rooms in general were very clean and tidy. The food was excellent and the wine selection was also pretty good. The hotel bar had a happy hour every evening with 2 for 1 cocktails. You could snorkel just at the pier and there were a lot of fishes and corals. I also went scuba diving, took a refresher course and then went on a boat dive. The instructor was English and very nice and made me feel safe and comfortable the whole time. All in all our stay at Minang was a very pleasant experience and I can recommend it to anyone who wants to be in a nice hotel in a paradise setting!

Tioman island is a paradise island, with clear blue water and white sandy beaches, and this resort is also perfect for those wanting peace and relax.
The resort is small but very quaint and charming, and due to its size you are given first class treatment from the staff who take their time in getting to know you and take care of you.
The staff, especially Alex, Vicky and Greg were really nice.

There is also a wonderful jungle trek leading from the hotel for 2 hours to a waterfall, as well as some very good snorkelling and diving possibilities. It was so easy to see the turtle and the baby shark near the beach...

The food was really good!!

All in all, Tioman island is a gem and the one place in all of Malaysia I would easily go back to.

ON the negative side -rooms are certainly basic - the air conditioner is barely adequate. Bathroom smells. There are no activities so if it rains be prepared to read. Unless you are in top physical condition, jungle trekking is out since the trail is steep and difficult. There is also no walking on the beach because it is too small. Certainly the place is no frills.
On the positive side - food was excellent and the snorkeling right off the beach was awesome. Another positive is the remoteness of the place. You won't be snorkeling with 50 other people.
Be sure and bring everything you need because you can't even buy sunscreen at the hotel. We thought the staff could have been more helpful but they certainly provide the basics. So ti just depends on what kind of place you want. I would recommend because of the snorkeling.

The reviews of these hotel were a mix of positive and negative impressions but honestly we can only say good things of this place.

The arrival is absolutely spectacular: the hotel is nestled in a very secluded bay with the jungle as a background and crystalline water.
Upon arrival the "famous" Vicky (she's a sort of general manager of the place) explains rules and services of the resort in a very pleasant way: and her drinks are as good (and as strong!) as everybody tells!!

Minang Cove doesn't advertise itself as a luxury resort and definitely isn't. It's rustic, comfortable and remote (no mobile phone - just a tiny little bit of singal at the end of the pier - no internet and no TV). It is a place where you go if you want to get away from it all and relax, not a place with resort standard facilities. It is a simple place on a remote little beach of a remote island, no Club Med! This means no signature toiletries, no room service and no marble bathroom so you should set expectations before you go. On the other side you get monkeys an squirrels walking right on your balcony and you wake up every morning to the sound of waves and birds.

The room (we had a sea view deluxe chalet) was spacious, bright and very simple, with a large balcony with comfy chairs facing the sea. We though the food was very good (we are Italian so we tend to be quite picky!) and the overall atmosphere totally relaxed and chilled out.

The beach is tiny but more than enough to accommodate all guest.
We both snorkeled and scuba dived. Snorkeling is absolutely amazing right fro mthe hotle beach and off the pier, no need to go anywhere else! Diving was also very nice and the young English divemaster very professional.
The trek to the waterfall is long and I have honestly seen better waterfalls but if you want to get away from the sea for a while you can give it a shot.

One small piece of advice. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served at set times and there's no food available outside meal times: bring snacks because there's none at the hotel and no close by shop (the resort is only accessible by boat).

Overall, we wish we could go back we spent three marvellous days!
