Stayed on the oil rig for a total of 4 nights and if we weren't going to another dive resort, I would have been very sad about leaving. The diving is epic, the staff friendly, food delicious and our accommodation was great! One flies into Tawau and its about a 2 hour drive to Semporna if I remember correctly. We were met at the airport and once we arrived at Semporna we quickly paid the balance outstanding at the office and then we were off on the boat for a 45 minute to the rig. Seeing the rig grow in size as we approached was so exciting!! Upon arrival our our baggage and us were loaded onto the lift, which is the same which is used for up/off loading divers and supplies.it was lunch time when we arrived, so we were told to eat, settle and then get ready to dive by 2pm. Throughout our stay, I thought the food was excellent. There is a dessert fridge and whoever was in charge of making the creme caramels is a hero. I think i had one for lunch and supper every day - it was soooo good!! For a resort that relies on all supplies coming in by boat, I thought the food and the selection was excellent!! Also, there is always a full jug of milk in the fridge for a nice glass of milo and that does go down a treat after some excellent diving.
My tip is pay the extra (which I don't think is a lot) and upgrade to one of the VIP rooms. They are massive in my opinion and from past reviews, I was expecting a tiny whole in the wall, which turned out to be the complete opposite. We couldn't have asked for more considering you are staying on an oil rig!!!
Now for the diving, which is why you are here in the first place. Sipidan was beyond any expectation we had. Baraccuda point was just mind blowingly good and I have never seen so many sharks in my life. I was acting like a giddy school girl. We stayed a total of 4 nights and therefore was expecting only one day for sipidan, but we ended up with two. On the 2nd trip we saw a leopard shark and a hammerhead, both were firsts for us. I loved all our divemasters and everyone is so friendly. I can't remember all the names, but Miji was awesome and shared my excitement for macro for when we dived mabul. Mando is multi-talented and sings in a band on some nights. Craig is still as excited about diving as ever and great to swap stories and photos with. Also, there is one gentleman and I have racked my brain, but can't remember his name, but he will be the gentleman who preps your breakfast and snacks in sipidan while you are off diving - he is just the best and has a fabulous personality(therefore I feel super bad about not remembering his name - but he deserves a mention as he looks after everyone)
Not many places where you are so spoilt for wide angle and macro at the sametime. Overall, an amazing experice and I would say if you have to opportunity - DO IT!! What are you waiting for....?
