“Great hangout for divers!”
Reviewed 13 November 2013

We read great reviews of this place as a dive resort, but did also hear that the rooms can be a little dodgy. Asked among my own friends and found someone who gave me a decent review, and my desire to stay in an oil rig beats all other consideration, so here we are! I must say this is the BEST decision ever, and I will not hesitate to go back again!

Having said that, of course, I think if you are with a non-diver partner, this might not be the place for you as there really isn't very much to do for non-divers. I think there are some games room but we never did check it out, and there is just so many times you can enjoy the (great) views from the top deck. The beautiful water bungalow just across a narrow stretch of water over at Mabul Island just looks so tempting! I did think we would have felt the other way if we had been staying there though...

We booked a 4D3N package, as thats the minimum for the resort to guarantee you a dive at Sipadan. The staff was very responsive when I was making reservation, and airport transfer was brilliant. The timing are quite fixed (only 3 airport pick up and 2 boat transfer a day) but it worked out really well. We had to wait for a 2nd flight to land, so we spend some time picking up some groceries at the airport. It was then a 1 hour ride to Semporna, then another 30-45min boat ride to the oil rig. In actual fact, you can pick up groceries at the supermarket across from the shop at Semporna, where they would stop to let you do your "check in".

The escalator is really convenient, and the best part is, you get to jump off the escalator (10m at low tide!) for thrills! Our divemaster tells us that you should only do this on your last day as you risk injuring yourself which might ruin your diving at Sipadan.

The dive area is just beside the escalator so it's really convenient when you suit up to go diving, or when you are stripping down after each dive. The house reef was nothing to shout about (maybe it was just the visibility when we were there, or it just pales in comparison to the rest of the diving in the area) but it's cool that you can do unlimited dives there, including night dives! Great place to get some practice in.

There are about 5 deck chairs in the dive shop area, which may or may not be enough, depending on the crowd. On one day, we had to wait quite long to get our own spot, but the next day, it was all empty! Otherwise, you can chill at the bar or dining area. Free flow coffee, tea and juice all day long! They also sell beer and Nescafe Dulce Gusto coffee.

The food was amazing! It is all Malaysian, but we thought everything was great. Plenty of vegetables, fish, seafood, fruits and dessert (usually a few type of cake or local dessert) each meal, and one night, a BBQ was set up! Only thing is breakfast starts a tad late (I think around 730am?), although I think bread is available for toasting all day long, and there are always biscuits in the tin. Definitely no complaints on the food front! For the early Sipadan dive where we set off at 6am in the morning, breakfast will be brought along and eaten at Sipadan Island after your first dive. We had fried kway teow (plus many other stuff) that tasted SO GOOD after a dive!

The diving at Sipadan was amazing. The visibility was not the best when we were there, but we saw loads of stuff. I have never seen so many grey sharks and turtles in one dive! You get to chill on Sipadan Island between dives, which is great (I hate waiting on the boat as I get seasick), and the island is gorgeous. Over at Mabul and Kapalai, the muck diving was amazing, and I love the artificial reefs! We saw so many moray eels and pygmy seahorse is almost guaranteed!

One can take the boat to Mabul Island (5 min away) everyday at 5pm to walk around the village. Or if divers are going out at 1.30pm, one can catch a ride too! So you are not really constraint to the oil rigs if you are not diving.

The room, although not great, was better than expected. We had a twin room, which comes with a window (unfortunately, faces a pillar of the oil rig!). It is also really spacious for a room on an oil rig! The only thing is the water pressure in the taps are strange and you might get splashed all over while brushing your teeth! In our room, we also had a spot of problem with water gathering at a corner of the toilet. Hot water and aircon works really well.

The best part of this dive resort is really its people. The staff was great! We dived with Suki at Sipadan and Helmi at Mabul/Kapalai. Suki is really friendly and shows us great stuff, but muck diving with Helmi simply blew my mind away! He showed us so many tiny little stuff it was AMAZING!! And he is always so jovial and cracking jokes! The other staff (dining area, boat men, etc etc) were also really really nice. Also, we met some really great dive mates here! I think thats the thing about staying at this dive resort which is very geared towards divers, and everybody just hangs out at the dining area talking about the dive(s) past and present. It's a great atmosphere, which I cannot imagine would be as prevalent in the other resorts!

I understand from a solo traveller that you can request for the twin rooms, but open to sharing if someone wants to, and pay the same as a couple travelling together. You will also not have any problem finding people to hang out with! One night, we had a band playing for awhile too.

Would totally go back again. A great diving experience!

Me and a friend spent 6D, 5N here. I'm a fairly experienced diver with 150 dives. We did 22 dives with no effort, all heavy equipment was carried by the staff, and the elevator from the rig goes straight down to the boat, or into the water if you wanna scuba under the rig. The staff was friendly and skilled. The food was local and great. Sipadan is obviously a very nice diving spot, Mabul and Kapalai aren't special at all. Under the rig isn't very much to see neither but the setting is cool going with the elevator into the water, and good to practise your compass skills going between the columns at night. The highlight was the cavern-course with Craig, he seemed very experienced and was a great teacher, and the turtle cave under Sipadan was truly a unique experience, must be seen!!

It has been a while...but I have always meant to write the review and now finally get to it...
This Dive Resort was recommended to me and I am grateful that I decided to book with them.
First off...yes, they are more expensive than other Dive Shops in the area, but it is worth paying a bit more.
The location...an old Oil Rig a short distance off Mabul Island...is fantastic. When you arrive you get off the boat onto a lift, which is already pretty nice in itself. There is a big Restaurant area and the area with all the dive gear and a beautiful sundeck...everything is spacious. I had a Dorm room to myself for the time of my stay...I had originally booked 4 nights but ended up extending to 8 nights! The Dorm room had only 2 beds and a shared bathroom.
The food was great and staff was always friendly and helpful!
You can do unlimited free housedives under the Rig which is a bonus...diving under there is really enjoyable!
The highlight of course is Sipadan! I got to dive there 3 times...you have to get up early, but this also means you are usually the first group on the island. SeaVentures uses very fast boats and some of the captains are amazing steering through the sometimes choppy ocean.

Two little things...I never got the hot water to work, but it didn't bother me too much and it would be nice if divers that do things that they shouldn't do would be told off more often...

Overall I have to say I was extremely sad to leave this wonderful place and I know I will be back at some point of time!

Thanks for a great experience.

Stayed on the oil rig for a total of 4 nights and if we weren't going to another dive resort, I would have been very sad about leaving. The diving is epic, the staff friendly, food delicious and our accommodation was great! One flies into Tawau and its about a 2 hour drive to Semporna if I remember correctly. We were met at the airport and once we arrived at Semporna we quickly paid the balance outstanding at the office and then we were off on the boat for a 45 minute to the rig. Seeing the rig grow in size as we approached was so exciting!! Upon arrival our our baggage and us were loaded onto the lift, which is the same which is used for up/off loading divers and supplies.it was lunch time when we arrived, so we were told to eat, settle and then get ready to dive by 2pm. Throughout our stay, I thought the food was excellent. There is a dessert fridge and whoever was in charge of making the creme caramels is a hero. I think i had one for lunch and supper every day - it was soooo good!! For a resort that relies on all supplies coming in by boat, I thought the food and the selection was excellent!! Also, there is always a full jug of milk in the fridge for a nice glass of milo and that does go down a treat after some excellent diving.

My tip is pay the extra (which I don't think is a lot) and upgrade to one of the VIP rooms. They are massive in my opinion and from past reviews, I was expecting a tiny whole in the wall, which turned out to be the complete opposite. We couldn't have asked for more considering you are staying on an oil rig!!!

Now for the diving, which is why you are here in the first place. Sipidan was beyond any expectation we had. Baraccuda point was just mind blowingly good and I have never seen so many sharks in my life. I was acting like a giddy school girl. We stayed a total of 4 nights and therefore was expecting only one day for sipidan, but we ended up with two. On the 2nd trip we saw a leopard shark and a hammerhead, both were firsts for us. I loved all our divemasters and everyone is so friendly. I can't remember all the names, but Miji was awesome and shared my excitement for macro for when we dived mabul. Mando is multi-talented and sings in a band on some nights. Craig is still as excited about diving as ever and great to swap stories and photos with. Also, there is one gentleman and I have racked my brain, but can't remember his name, but he will be the gentleman who preps your breakfast and snacks in sipidan while you are off diving - he is just the best and has a fabulous personality(therefore I feel super bad about not remembering his name - but he deserves a mention as he looks after everyone)

Not many places where you are so spoilt for wide angle and macro at the sametime. Overall, an amazing experice and I would say if you have to opportunity - DO IT!! What are you waiting for....?

If you are here mainly to dive, then there is no better base than the rig. They have one of the best ratio of guests/sipadan passes of any resort in the area, maximising your chances of diving sipadan. I was there for 4d/3n and got to spend 2 whole days in sipadan.
The dive sites are spectacular and few places can compete with sipadan. The staff is very approachable and helpful and will do their best to ensure your stay is memorable. As a relatively new diver, I had all my questions and doubts answered. The rooms are basic but clean.
The setup is very friendly and as a solo traveller, I immediately met similar minded fellow travellers with whom to share diving and travel stories. The best thing about my stay on the rig though is without doubt the food! The quality and variety of the buffet style meals blew my mind away. I don't think I have ever been that well fed since I left my mum's house.
In summary, I had every single of my expectations met/exceeded and would highly recommend the rig as a base for diving the area.

End of september 2013 me and my dive buddy arrived at the rig for a wonderful dive experience in Celebes Sea.

Right after a great lunch (and the food through out our stay were fantastic) we were briefed by the staff on the rig and regarding its facilities. The room was good. It was clean with individual AC unit. The bathroom has hot water, and it was surprisingly clean. The diving facilities were great.

Jie Ji was our dive master and this talented and professional young man has it all under control for the entire trip. Titta, a PADI instructor on the rig, was always there for us with insights on what to expect around the dive sites. We also had Mion, another great dive master on the rig, with us during one of the trip.

All in all the crews, the diving facilities, the accommodation, and the food provided by Seaventures Dive Rig were all fantastic. If you come to dive Sipadan then Seaventures is the place to be!
