Good way to see a variety of forest species up close. We enjoyed the suspended walkways above the forest.

“Great experience”
Reviewed 3 March 2014

Really lovely walks through rainforest & more cultivated gardens. You can get up in to the canopy by climbing very tall towers. We visited the day after our Sepilok visit & enjoyed this discovery Centre hugely. The canopy walks are amazing & one visitor we met had seen Orangs on the walkway. It is a very extensive area & you will need several hours to cover it all & some paths can be fairly steep & slippery if it has rained but very worth a visit.

“loved the organised trek”
Reviewed 16 December 2013

If you love trekking in a safe environment this is definitely the place. try getting there early so you get to cover lots more area as it shuts by 530 or 6.
Bird watchers paradise and they have set up watch towers across the entire area which is a brilliant idea.

“Should be so much more.”
Reviewed 23 September 2013

I love the rainforest and taking pictures of the wildlife that lives there, particularly the birds. Going to this place I was severely out of luck. There are no water birds on the lake and only 1 bird spotted on the one and half hour jungle walk. No other animals. Very very disappointing.

There has been lots of money spent on the car park, the park centre buliding and the tree top walk; no money spent on the poorly laid out walking tracks. Instead of following contours or using gentle slopes so everyone can enjoy the walk, the tracks go from the top of the ridge to the bottom of the creek and back up to the top of the ridge. Unless you are very fit, don't attempt the walks.

“Very hard to find but worth visiting if you have some spare time in Sandakan!”
Reviewed 3 September 2013 via mobile

It took us quite an effort to find this place, I am sure it is not somewhere many tourists find! Please note this place is NOT the Rainforest Discovery Center as described in the last few entries - there is no canopy walk or lake and it is free to enter... if you manage to get there! My husband and I had rented a car so drove there - it is on a road called Jalan Tshun Ngen which is off Jalan Utara, the old route 22 into Sandakan. If driving from the Sandakan direction the turning is on your left, after a big crossroads with traffic lights and just before an Esso petrol station.

The park itself is nice. The locals use it as an exercise ground! There is a good sized car park, small shop (sells ice cream) and map showing you the trails. There is a sealed (concrete) 'jogging path' (with some steep hills!) and a few nature trails that lead into the forest come off these sealed paths. The nature trails are reasonably short but you MUST stick to them - it would be easy to get lost and the forest has some steep drops that I wouldn't fancy navigating without help. You shouldn't need boots but I imagine the paths along the nature trails get slippery when wet. We also found some quite steep sections - there is rope to help you along but going down is still a little tricky for those without 'mountain goat' feet. We saw more local joggers than wildlife (& no tourists!) but there is plenty for the botanists out there - lots of the trees have info in English pinned to them. If you have some time and want something free, a little different and which gives you some exercise it is definitely worth it!

There is a website - http://www.sandakanrfp.sabah.gov.my/
No opening times given but I imagine it is open between sunrise and sunset at the least.
