“Great place as long as you don't mind the jungle insects.”
Reviewed 2 August 2013

Had a great time at this resort when we visited for 2 nights. We were picked up from our hotel in Sandakan and from there everything was organised very well. We did two river trips, the first one we seen a lot of wildlife and it was amazing and then on the second night is was very quiet with nothing much to see - just the luck of the draw i suppose. The food was excellent. If anyone says that the stairs are easy they are either extremely fit or they are lying! My only comment would be that maybe some shutters or screens should be put up around the eating area on an evening as it was swarming with flying moths and insects (some very big) and this, for me, was the only negative part as I was a nervous wreck. Although, it is in the jungle and so what do you expect! Definitely bring a torch for the stairs at night.

I stayed at the last frontier resort in July with my mom and we had the best time. Jason was a a great cook, told fascinating stories and he was also super helpful too! He escorted my mom up and down the stairs and made sure she had a flashlight when it was dark. The best part was when jason pointed out the bearded pig in the forest. The location worth the stair climbing. We look forward to coming back!

570 steps worthwhile taking for the authenticity, good food and personal service! We enjoyed the excursions with knowledgeable and truly friendly guides + other guests and good talks with the hosts and owners. A great hide-away in the middle of the rainforest! 4 comfortable rooms only - so make sure you book well in advance :-)!

This place blew my mind! I came here alone and had such a great time. The owners made me feel so at home and are so accommodating. Im a vegetarian and the food I ate was sensational they use a lot of meat substitutes which I would struggle to tell the difference from regular meat!
The river trips were beautiful and I saw everything!! We had Elephants both days... I feel very to have stayed at the last frontier and cannot recommend it enough. Oh and the other thing I really liked is the owners are very environmentally conscious, they have a lot to tell you about Palm oil if you want to listen!

Room Tip: All rooms are pretty much the same but if you want a bit more privacy ask for the end room.

This was my first experience of staying in a jungle setting. We had a brilliant time while we were there. We were picked up from our hotel in Sandakan and taken to the lodge where we had a nice cold welcome drink which was needed after we had climbed the stairs.
The rooms were clean, tidy and comfortable. There was hot and cold running water in the bathroom. The fan was adequaet to keep us cool at night, infact one night we had to turn it off.

The staff were excellent and really friendly. Jason wasn't there to cook for us but Marvin who has worked there for nearly 5 years has been fully trained by Jason and the food was really good and plentiful. We couldn't fault it. The moths at meal time were a bit bothersome (I'm not a fan of insects) I was expecting this though as it's the middle of the jungle.

The river trip was lovely we were spoilt on our first night and managed to see lots of different kinds of monkeys including an orangutan.

Gert was an excellent host and is keen to take on suggestions. I have nothing but admiration on how they managed to build the place. Climbing the stairs only a few times was hard enough, never mind having to build them then carry up all the building materials etc.
I couldn't recommend this place enough. Thank you for the experience.

We loved our stay at the Last Frontier. Gert is such a great host and organizes everything perfectly. The room was very comfortable, the activities were super, and the food was amazing. Gert is very knowledgable about local environmental issues so that guests can have an informed visit to the rainforest. He is also very helpful in arranging for transport to the lovely but off-the-beaten-path resort. The other staff members are also very nice and competent. The only scary part was the plethora of moths during dinner time.

We stayed here for two nights in March. This was our favourite stay in Sabah. Location is stunning high above the trees and overlooking the river. Jason and Gert have worked so hard to provide a fantastic retreat. The stairs can be taken slowly, and so worthwhile at the top. Rooms are scrupulously clean with modern bathroom. Tasteful decor. I know everyone has already said how great the food is (thanks Jason), and the attention to detail is wonderful. We had an early start and Jason made us a delicious packed breakfast and coffee. The river trips were awsome with sitings of pygmy elephants, proboscis monkeys, orangs, wild boar, monitor lizards and more! We had the pick up from Sepilok and learnt loads from Jason on the journey. They then arranged a taxi for us to Lahad Datu. We had a relaxing and enjoyable stay and would highly recommend.
Internet can be rather patchy so persevere with making contact.
