“Fantastic location & amazing staff”
Reviewed 10 September 2013 via mobile

This place is a true gem if you can handle the 500 steps. Jason and the staff are amazing. Food fantastic. We saw Orangutans within 5 minutes of arriving and the next day while having lunch.
River cruises were great as we saw elephants and loads more.
The other great thing about this resort is how passionate Jason & his team are about helping the locals and keeping the resort as eco friendly as possible.

We were a group of 5 that spent 3 days 2 nights at the Last frontier resort. The service was absolutely brilliant with several phone calls prior to our arrival ensuring that things ran smoothly. We were picked up from the airport and taken to the resort. Although the resort was at the top of about 600 steps, it was well worth it. Its recommended that you don't take everything that you've packed for your holiday to the top and to make use of their lockers at the base of the stairs. It was my friend's birthday whilst we were there and she received a special birthday breakfast and the hosts had taken the pains to get a cake and carry it up to the accommodation! Even if they hadn't gone to the trouble of doing this, the accommodation was spotless and amazing for being half way up the hillside in the middle of the jungle, with hot showers! The river trips were brilliant. We saw wild orangutans, Probscis monkeys, macaques, hornbills as well as crocodiles and Pygmy elephants. There's also wildlife spotting to be done in the resort and we saw an orangutan, wild boar, bearded pig and a porcupine whilst have our meals. It was a truly amazing experience and I thank Jason and Gert for being great hosts.

Room Tip: There's only 4 rooms. And they are all the same!

We enjoyed all the experiences, walking through the village to get to the boat, wildlife spotting, the boat trips, climbing the stairs in the dark, jungle walking, misty mountain views, friendly hosts, interesting guests and varied meals. This is a special place for those who are willing to take up the challenge of the 600 stairs.

Had a great time at this resort when we visited for 2 nights. We were picked up from our hotel in Sandakan and from there everything was organised very well. We did two river trips, the first one we seen a lot of wildlife and it was amazing and then on the second night is was very quiet with nothing much to see - just the luck of the draw i suppose. The food was excellent. If anyone says that the stairs are easy they are either extremely fit or they are lying! My only comment would be that maybe some shutters or screens should be put up around the eating area on an evening as it was swarming with flying moths and insects (some very big) and this, for me, was the only negative part as I was a nervous wreck. Although, it is in the jungle and so what do you expect! Definitely bring a torch for the stairs at night.

I stayed at the last frontier resort in July with my mom and we had the best time. Jason was a a great cook, told fascinating stories and he was also super helpful too! He escorted my mom up and down the stairs and made sure she had a flashlight when it was dark. The best part was when jason pointed out the bearded pig in the forest. The location worth the stair climbing. We look forward to coming back!

570 steps worthwhile taking for the authenticity, good food and personal service! We enjoyed the excursions with knowledgeable and truly friendly guides + other guests and good talks with the hosts and owners. A great hide-away in the middle of the rainforest! 4 comfortable rooms only - so make sure you book well in advance :-)!

This place blew my mind! I came here alone and had such a great time. The owners made me feel so at home and are so accommodating. Im a vegetarian and the food I ate was sensational they use a lot of meat substitutes which I would struggle to tell the difference from regular meat!
The river trips were beautiful and I saw everything!! We had Elephants both days... I feel very to have stayed at the last frontier and cannot recommend it enough. Oh and the other thing I really liked is the owners are very environmentally conscious, they have a lot to tell you about Palm oil if you want to listen!

Room Tip: All rooms are pretty much the same but if you want a bit more privacy ask for the end room.
