A posh place with a seafront location, a perfect pool area on top with a spectacular view!
Sandakan itself isn't much but if you are visiting Sepilok and other activities in the area this is the place to stay. We experienced great service from the staff in the reception as we had trouble with our itinerary. The loud music at breakfast was not nice, which I told them but it was the same level the second morning.

And what a wasted opportunity. It should be the pick of places to stay in a great spot that only has one other top option.
Opened in October 2012 and local taxi drivers say the highest occupancy rate achieved since is 50%. Most of the time it's much lower and given the tiptop location ask a question or two. Start with why?
Staff yawned in guests faces (mine included), entered lifts and doors in front of you, stood round talking to each other and relied on guests to tell them stuff like there were no glasses at the juice station. Pretty fine buffet breakfast but in Malaysia why is roti something you specially have to ask for?
It is new - that's appealing. No mould in the bathroom but housekeeping is well below par. One day the Front of House Manager sat down and chatted to get further feedback. Yep. Previous feedback about checkin and how awful the experience with Wrapped food was.
While my ice drink melted on the table I said I knew the floor in room and bathroom hadn't been swept. My hair lay testament. We parted and housekeeping were promptly dispatched to attend to outstanding matters. Meanwhile, downstairs, I found additional napkins to mop my drink off the table. On return to the room later in the day there was some of my hair, on the floor, still patiently bearing witness.
I wish them all the best but at the price it doesn't deliver. There's no spa and the pool sits in the beating sun for much of the day so it's not refreshing. Maybe they'll take up the suggestion to provide shade for both pools. Help make it a beez neez location for a late afternoon refresh. Now, if only they could get someone to staff the bar.
ps - Stenback's spot on about the limo serivce offered. Absolutely nothing wrong with the service provided by local taxis.
pps - aside from the usual precautiions all smart travellers take the area's perfectly safe.

To stay in Sandakan is not the easiest and Four Points is the best choice, so when reading this review keep that in mind. Also I compare with other Four Points hotels in term of service etc. The rooms, the view (if sea view) and the location is just great. Two things was really bad during our 5 day stay.

First, the concierge try to fool us big time by giving us an overprice (X times normal price) for a taxi that was not a standard taxi but a friend to him "Special price for you only, do not tell anyone else in the hotel". Since we had used taxi a lot we knew the rates and reported it to the hotel management. That is not the service you want from the concierge, you are supposed to trust them so you can avoid to be tricked.

The other thing was that the staff seemed well trained, but not in any way capable of being agile and flexible to customer needs. Everyone was nice, but seemed to need to be micromanaged. If no management on the floor, no service. Sometimes it could stand 10 staff in a corner, and still no service was provided, like when ordering a drink to the pool or waiting to be seated for dinner. It was the same with the cleaning. We had used a knife for the fruit included in the room (supposed to be new fruit every day, but no, just at arrival) and after cleaning they had just folded the napkin (heavily used since we have a six year old) and put everything back, no new napkin, no new fruit, no new (or at least cleaned) knife. That is just one of many small examples.

For us the stay was really drawn down by the service and that we could not trust the staff. The facilities and design of the hotel is just great and the pool area is fantastic, but unfortunately the review is heavily hit by the service provided.

Room Tip: Chose a room with sea view.

Don't know what anyone would have to complain about. It's new, super clean, great sea views and the people who work there are the friendliest and most helpful I've ever engaged at a hotel. Chose a club level room but had to go down several floors to the club lounge. Not much variety of snacks and drinks but it was fine. The pool views are wonderful! The breakfast had a good variety though the service could use a little work. Overall, I loved this hotel and look forward to coming back soon!

Spent two nights here in mid March. Arrived after long journey from Lahad Datu in the evening. Greeted at door by very friendly staff, and luggage taken to our room. Reception is on the first floor up an escalator. Easy to check in. Room spacious with view over the water to the stilt village and market. Room clean with adequate supplies. Breakfast was a range of hot and cold. We only realised there was hot food and fresh juices up the far end on our second morning! Great loccation on the waterfront, in the town near loads of places to eat. Staff helpful with advice for trips and organising taxis.

Only stayed here for one night, as staying in KK, and using as a starting point for trips. Ideal location for Selingan trip(turtle island) as the Crystal Quest quay is a couple of minutes away by taxi. Only 100 MYR for round trip to Sepilok, or 250 for Sepilok, the nearby forest walk and Proboscis monkey sanctuary. Room was quality, the view from the restaurant was the best sunset we'd seen. Food, service and staff all top notch. Thoroughly recommend.

Lovely warm welcome by staff at entrance. .we were shown to the front desk and shown our room..the view was breathtaking ...the room was lovely and clean and spacious. The pool was heaven with staff always on hand to help or serve bar snacks and drinks..explore the aeea around the hotel. .we ate at some fab cafes..food was tasty and fresh. .will definitely stay again. .oh forgot to mention the restaurant upstairs. .I was bewildered by the choice of fresh food, juice bar...and they seemed to cater for every taste..lovely..I ate so healthy. .can't wait to visit again
