“Good - but nothing to rave about”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 2 August 2011

We had real difficulty getting the hotel to answer any emails. We wanted to know about what the different room types actually entailed other than just the size difference - i.e. separate bedrooms, a balcony etc. After many emails chasing them up we finally got a reply and had unsatisfactory answers to our questions. They also quoted us prices and told us for some of our dates the room types we wanted were not available. I straight away went to their hotel online booking site and booked rooms for cheaper and the room types were all available... Not good.

We stayed 3 nights and had two rooms for our group. The stay was fine - typical for a large hotel. Some staff were really good, some staff could not care less. Pool is really good but needs more deck chairs as is busy. Food is ok. Good taxis easily available and a price list available which is really handy. 10RM to city centre.

As mentioned we had trouble getting any real info on the difference on room types so will provide some info that may help some people. We had a deluxe room(standard) and a junior suite. Junior suite was about 120RM more expensive.

Both had separate shower and bath. The junior suite had a larger bathroom, a large writing desk and a large balcony (not a great view) with no furniture on it. Unfortunately the large desk takes up a lot of the extra space. Junior suite had a fruit platter. If you are just 2 people I don't think I would bother with the junior suite. We were 2 plus child and I am still undecided as to whether it was worth it.

Our room was lovely and quiet(which we requested) which was great.

Room Tip: Air con is connected so if smoke bothers you make sure you get a non smoking floor

After a home stay in the jungles of Borneo, we were very much looking forward to some rest & relaxation.
We read many differing views on this hotel; unfriendly staff and out dated rooms but we were very pleasantly surprised. Traveling with our two teenage daughters, we were given adjoining rooms that had everything we needed. The staff couldn't do enough for us, always smiling, always willing to help in any way we needed. Buffet breakfast was included & that was well worth having, however, we ate out most nights at the waterfront in town (last one on the right looking at the water)where we got great value for money. Also Sim Sim restaurant at the stilt village is an absolute must !! Horrible looking ghetto when you roll up by taxi but the food was the best we had in Malaysia & well worth overlooking the ugly plastic chairs & drab first impression.
This was a very relaxing hotel, great pool & great service. The only hotel in the area we would stay at !

Room Tip: Book direct with the hotel online. Stay in the newer section near pool

Just stayed one night after a long travel journey. Room was nice enough and clean, and there were a lot of communal eating and hang out places around the hotel. The pool looked fantastic, but didn't go in. The breakfast buffet was very good. Decor a bit tired and expensive for what it was, but other than that can't fault it. The staff here were fantastic, incredibly helpful with all my questions

We stayed here for 2 nights and were basically very happy with our stay. We stayed on the first floor of the Borneo Wing, which may have been renovated recently - bathroom looked it anyway, though the room didn't really (beds were comfortable but room had stark flouro lighting and white tiled floor which was a little glare-y. No smell though, as others noted. Towels were old, thin and grey).

Yes the rooms were ordinary and the prices a little high (A$70 per night) and the hotel may be a bit dated (though we found that to be part of its charm actually), but we had free wi-fi and the lobby/ pool area/ jungle behind was gorgeous and gave us an instant feeling of relaxation. My son had an absolute ball every day for hours in the pool (though the spa was cold - not sure if that is usual?) and loved jumping off the bridge (see pics) and climbing up/ whooshing down the very fast little water slide (they wouldn't allow that at the local swimming pool back home!). Not easy to book a massage (nothing available when I enquired - not many masseurs apparently) but the service is available (even poolside - gee that would have been nice) and not unreasonably priced for a resort (100MRY for 30 mins).

Food was very ordinary in the poolside (Malay) restaurant, but the selection at the breakfast and lunch buffets was large and we were able to move out of the restaurant itself to a table by the side of the pool to eat or drink cocktails while my son swam (quite a few mosquitos at night when you sit out there though). Hard to find anything on the dinner menu worth recommending, but we didn't realise there was a Chinese Restaurant downstairs until checkout, so you may do better there. The Lounge Cafe has great cakes and decent coffee.

Staff members were ok, I wouldn't call them particularly friendly but they weren't rude either.

Agnes Keith house & also A.K. teahouse (few mins walk fro each other) are worth a visit. Orang Utans reserve was overrated (there was only one orang utan there at feeding time, with its back turned to us and sitting quite far away so we couldn't really see it anyway), but rainforest walk is lovely in the morning, when the jungle is alive and not on siesta time!

Room Tip: Borneo wing is renovated I think. May be noisy on lower floors of main part of the hotel (pool, kara...

We ( family of 4 ) stayed here on two occasions during June/July 2011. The hotel is 3 mins by car from the CBD area of Sandakan, it is definitely the best hotel in Sandakan, has a very large pool with slide for kids which is essential in the tropical climate of this area. Book the hotel on line through the hotel website directly ( not through expedia or asia rooms etc) for very reasonable rates. We paid A$52 per night for 2 persons incl full buffet breakfast which is a bargain especially as the hotel is of high standard. All rooms have a/c, tv fridge etc and are spacious. Try and get a room in the Borneo Section as these are newer. All staff were friendly and helpful, English is widely spoken throughout Malaysia so no communication problems. The CBD area of Sandakan is a bit of a dump, although ok for dinner along on of the restaurants on the seaside. A taxi to CBD area only A$4.00.

Nothing really much to say about this large ‘international’ hotel (fifteen minutes from the airport and about forty minutes from the Sepilok orang-outangs) which we used for a stopover after a late flight. We left first thing in the morning, so had no chance to check out the facilities. It was clean and comfortable, and everything worked, though the large characterless US-chain-style rooms could have been anywhere in the world, with no attempt even at Malaysian art, prints or décor. Breakfast was an extensive, if not exceptional, international/Malaysian buffet, though, as so often, the fruit, which should have been spectacular, was no more than average. I’m sure there are more interesting (if possibly less reassuring and safe) places for a longer stay in Sandakan.

We stayed overnight en route to an island and the hotel was okay. Grand entry and nice pool but very dated looking. Interestingly enough our teenage boys thought it was lovely! The rooms are large and well air-conditioned (thank goodness as it was soooo humid). The beds are rock hard but better than soft saggy beds. The hairdryer was attached inside a drawer and wouldn't extend further than the drawer so I had to stand very awkwardly! The staff were the most miserable, grumpy-faced, lack lustre people we have ever come across. We had room service which was fast and good. The kids thought it was excellent! A sirloin steak with chips was under $20 AU which was good. Overall it served it's purpose. There were no other options in town (4 star) but we heard they're building a Sheraton on the waterfront and that will be the best choice soon. As we were only there one day it would have been nice to go out and walk around town (which we did but using a taxi to get there) so if you get a 4 star on the waterfront then choose that.
