Sabah Hotel Sandakan
Ranked #3 of 32 Hotels in Sandakan
Reviewed 17 August 2013

Is definitely in need of revamping and redecoration, but is conveniently situated a short walk or taxi ride from Sandakan town centre. The room we were first allocated was very noisy (carpet hadn’t been vacuumed) and when we complained, the desk clerk said that it was the condenser for the hotel’s air conditioning. We were quickly offered an alternative upgraded room. However, since the clerk who booked us in should/must have known about the noise in the original room, we should have been spared the inconvenience of relocating by not being given that room in the first place. We ate one evening meal in the Hotel restaurant. Despite a reasonably impressive menu, what we first ordered was not available and the bar staff found that they did not have all the ingredients for a cocktail we ordered. The food when it came was of indifferent quality compared to the excellent fare we sampled at the Ramadan Bazaar in Sandakan at a fraction of the cost. We stayed at the Sabah Hotel during a four week-holiday in South East Asia and this was easily both the most expensive and the worst meal we had during our entire holiday.

The buffet is one of the worst I have ever had the displeasure of using, especially for vegetarians as there are no vegetarian mains and even the meat mains are of low quality. The food once eaten is hardly replaced. The a la carte food however is much better having a few more vegetarian options and generally of better quality still not amazing but better than the buffet.

The pool was our favourite thing, as the hotel was quite we had the pool to ourselves. Breakfast buffet style everything you could want from toast, pancakes, egg station, juices, fruits and cereal. Rooms very clean and tidy although they have check toiletries in the bathroom. Beds comfy and location brilliant for exploring.

This is second time to this hotel ,rooms are big and clean ,the concierge are more than helpful with the luggage,The only trouble we had was ordering food around the pool ,They managed to keep forgetting part of the order each time ,but overall very good value for money not to far to walk or 10rgt to the town by taxi

This is not the ritziest of hotels, but it is clean and has a nice pool and relaxed atmosphere. It is not central for Sandakan, but an easy cab ride in. We ate here a couple of times and the food was interesting with a wide choice at their buffet at lunch time and breakfast. Our rooms were large and a little dated, but the bathrooms were well appointed and things worked - including the wifi except during big storms. Staff were particularly helpful in helping us sort out an airline problem, and were noticeably friendly and smiling. We like the gift shop selling local author Agnes Keith's books. The Sheraton looked to be in a much nicer position with a great view out over the bay, but am sure it was also much more expensive. We would stay here again.

Actually we are just 2km away from Sandakan town, away from the hustle and bustle of the centre, surrounded by natural greeneries and wake up to the whistling of the birds!

Thank you again and looking forward to your return!

Stayed for 3 days with my family in two very nice and clean rooms with good beds and nice big bathrooms. They did change both linnen and towels every moorning.
The food did seem to need some attention, it wasn't even possible to get a desent cup of coffee, so we took most of our meals outside the hotel.
The reception did not have service as their first priority and couldn't helps us regarding check in time or driving time time to the airport...? There were just one serviceminded person we met there - one of the bell boys who seemed to enjoy and put pride i his job helping the guests feel comfortable. I hope for Sabah Hotel that he one day will be the leading manager teaching the staff how.
