NAK Hotel
Ranked #9 of 33 Hotels in Sandakan

I'm really grateful that NAK hotel is listed in the Borneo- Lonely Planet book. Our bus got into Sandakan fairly late on an extremely rainy night. We had no options to look around so we picked a hotel from the book. I was immediately impressed by the cleanliness of the room and the decor. Right up my alley for style. My favorite thing about this hotel is the rooftop restaurant. After arriving I was so grateful that we didn't have to go on a mission to find good food and drinks. We just walked right upstairs. Great pizza, drinks, and atmosphere. This hotel could definitely use some renovations…and I really wanted wifi in my room (rather than just the lobby and rooftop). However, for the price, its a cute little spot if you passing through Sandakan.

We were placed in this hotel by General tours for our last night in Borneo I checked trip advisor reviews it looked reasonable. The hotel was like a beat up South Carolina motel beside a secondary road .The hotel is in need of a lot of repair.the sink and bath both leaked and taking a shower required a good sense of balance as it rocked when you moved .the towels were thread bare. The room was painted in a flat deep purple ,very depressing.sleeping was disturbed by a lot of street noise. This hotel is not recommended .

The hotel is old, the room was shabby, the TV is from eighties with three channels, AC barely worked. The location is good, but Sandakan is compact and the location matters less. Yes, there is a rooftop bar/restaurant with OK food, but nothing exciting. There were problems with hot water, even after 10 minutes the water was only warm. Overall, there is no charm in the hotel and just bare functionality - not sure why I stayed there.

Room Tip: Stay in a different hotel :)

This hotel is simply a charming place to stay in. It's definitely value for money if you reserved and paid in advance by taking advantage of the special promotions being held. Location wise is strategic and easy to move about as the main bus station is close by.
The family room that we were in was clean and spacious. Nevertheless, there are some areas that need to improve, for instance the poor TV reception and it's limited channels. This hotel also have a very nice and cosy F&B outlet called Balin up on the rooftop where great views of Sandakan and the nearby ocean can be enjoyed. Breakfast, lunch & dinner is served there and I must say the quality is good and delicious, comparable to higher star rated hotels. Must make it a point to drop by!
We would like to thank Alice of the front desk in particular and all the staff who we had encountered, for making our stay a PLEASANT one early this month. All of you are very helpful and friendly in nature!

Let's start with the reason why I gave this hotel 5 stars: it is an excellent accomodation for the money you pay in a non-touristic town. So besides it's good value for money it's also of a quality you just wouldn't expect in Sandakan. A great way to treat yourself after fighting the Borneo jugnle for a week.

The rooms are very clean, luxurious (in the way that it has really comfy beds and a nice shower) and the rooftop restaurant has great food, snacks and cocktails. The staff is very nice and helpful.

Personally I found it was the ideal place to reset myself after having an exciting time in the outback of Borneo.

The pride of Sandakan town, once known as Elopura. The NAK hotel (est. 1966) has been one of the first few hotels around ever since the British came to make their presence known in the once ever busy Sandakan township. With the harbour located just a stone's throw away from its strategic location, it is without a doubt that this ancient hotel reserves the right to command a magnificent view from its general outlook.

No other hotels as splendid as the NAK can be so strategically located with the bus station located right opposite it and the beginning of the heritage trail just a few distance away. All visitors get a refreshing welcome drink which was a brilliant exchange for the scorching bright late morning and afternoon sun. The interior decor of the lobby is dubbed with a Chinese taste with some old fashioned cash register, furnitures, racks, tables, cabinets and paintings all resembling and evoking memories of the recent past. The elevator is a small dingy one which could easily accommodate a family of four or five, but that's about it. They only have two of those, so if you're feeling up to the challenge you can take the stairs. There's after all only seven floors with the roof top level being discounted for and is not accessible by the elevators. Staffs here are friendly and kind enough to point out to you the local attractions and how to get there.

Rooms are pleasant - we got the family room with two single beds and one queen sized bed attached to a toilet of a marvel. The room is extremely spacious with a great view facing part of the naval base and the sea as well as the bus station. The toilet gives off a pretty old rustic look and smells musty too but I take this all in good faith as the hotel is after all nearly five decades old with the further point of it in attempts to relive the past. My parents loved the place and couldn't stop commending on the smart decor of the room and the lobby.

Their rooftop dining is another plus point to marvel on but I'd leave this on another section review at Ba Lin Rooftop Restaurant - so that readers won't get confused with it.

Room Tip: Get the higher floor level rooms - level 5-7 to acquire a commanding view of the harbour
