Room sting, smell just like damp clothes. Bedroom slippers out of stock! Only one broken hanger found. Toilet wall full of algae everywhere. Have to stand at the room door to get the wifi!! TV channles blur. Noisy sound from downstair.

They say appearance can be deceiving. That accurately describes ParkCity Everly Hotel Miri. We checked in late, having just drove up all the way from Bintulu so when we arrived at the hotel carpark it was already 9pm. While it looks majestic and impressive on the outside, step in and you will see that this is a rather old hotel that is in desperate need of a major facelift. The location is some distance off the city but it's pretty close to the seaside. While the room I got was big and spacious, the interior looks really dated and the air-conditioning was just not cold. Called the front desk to get maintenance to take a look, and it took the maintenance team a good half an hour before someone knocked on my door. After fiddling with the air-conditioning, the maintenance guy told me to give it half-an-hour, or request for a new room. By the time I had my dinner outside and got back to the hotel, it was already 11pm and the air-conditioning was still not cold. Worse still, my colleague in a different room told me the air-conditioning in his room wasn't cold either. So I couldn't be bothered. The one small plus point was breakfast was good but that's about it. Would not stay in this hotel again. Would not recommend it to anyone either.

This was the last of 3 East Malaysian hotels we visited within the space of a week. We went there with pretty low expectations. We'd read on Tripadvisor how many recent reviewers had remarked upon how poorly maintained and cleaned the rooms were. And the 2 previous East Malaysian hotels we'd stayed at had suggested that perhaps this isn't a part of the world with particularly high hotel standards. Plus, we'd got a decent price of not much over 125RM per night and we thought that at that price, who cares about a slightly dated guest room?

So we weren't expecting a lot, but were still a little bit surprised just how grim the room was. As soon as you exit the lift/elevator on the upper floors there was an overpowering smell of damp and mould as you walk to your room. The room itself had a lingering smell of body odour, especially prevalent in the bathroom and around the entrance.

On the positive side, the room was fairly spacious, the fridge worked quite well, and in spite of the decrepid looking window frames with holes blocked by tissue paper, we didn't get any lizard visitors. The bed was also reasonably comfortable

The standard of cleanliness was very poor, however. The basics of changing the bed sheets, replacing the bathroom toiletries and emptying the rubbish bins had been done. Probably the carpet had been given a brief vacuum. But it was clear that such a superficial clean was all the room had had for a long, long time. The windows were filthy with dust and a few dead insects. The fridge, whilst functional, had a substantial amount of mould inside it. The white toilet was black with dirt around the tank cover and around the edges of the seat. The bath and sink hadn't been much better cleaned and the plug in the latter was partially blocked. Throughout our 2 days in the room, we kept finding ants in the bathroom.

The ants were not just in the bathroom. They appeared sometimes on one of the bedside tables and in the area between the bed and window.

A dated and worn room is one thing. A room that simply hasn't been cleaned properly for ages is quite another.

Other aspects of the hotel weren't actually so bad though. Although the lounge chairs around the pool were crawling with ants and sometimes partly broken, the pool itself was usable albeit not as clean as it ought to have been (had to fish out a couple of drinks can ring pulls before my toddler son cut his foot on them) and its layout quite nice. Also, we went to the bar for a drink and some food on both nights and found the service to be friendly and very good and the food pretty decent too. Indeed, I noted that the hotel seems to make a fair amount from events like weddings and people coming to dine but not sleep there.

Perhaps that is why such little effort is made on the rooms. Indeed, we unfortunately checked-out having left something in the bedroom wardrobe and only realised when we were back home (3 hours drive away). We are absolutely 100% certain the item WAS left in the wardrobe, however feared it was likely gone for good. After all, if the hotel can't be bothered to keep the room properly clean, they're hardly likely to expend the effort required to pick up a forgotten item and keep it safe for the owner re-claiming it. Sure enough, several phone calls with amusingly different stories coming from the people spoken to still all came back with the insistence that nothing had been found in the room.

Conclusion - if you're going here to dine only, it may well be ok. But if, like presumably something close to 100% of people reading this, you're considering a place to stay, then I'd suggest staying well clear unless you get a deal of not much over 100 ringgit a night and are ok with a camping-like room experience. Even then, I'd point out that our deal of 125RM did NOT include breakfast, which was offered for a hefty 41RM extra per person, effectively giving us a 200+RM deal with breakfast. Another recent reviewer suggested there are better places for the same price. That MUST surely be the case.....if not then Miri would have a bunch of quite dreadful hotel options.

Room Tip: Find a different hotel!!

I have been a regular visitor to Miri, the last trip being 2 years ago. Our family have always stayed in ParkCity Everly Miri. I must say the hotel has regressed quite a lot since the 2 years we have last been here. It was quite a disappointment in fact.

Check -in staff: Professional but did not have any of my booking details done on hotel website. We booked 3 rooms. This is despite calling in prior to arriving to request the type of rooms and a baby cot.

Rooms: Dated, ill-maintained and all had a mouldy smell on arrival. Parts of the rooms had obviously not been cleaned with the amount of dust and used tea-lights in the toilets. 1 room had a blocked sink and toilet that cannot be flushed. 1 room had faulty air-conditioning. And lastly, my own room had a blocked bath-tub. I was quite disappointed to find a gecko sitting in the bath-tub on arrival. It scared my wife.

Swimming pool: Obviously very poorly or not maintained and cleaned for a while. The water was murky but we braved and entered the water as there were other guests in it. Getting in was a wrong decision, the pool had a layer of slime and debris lying on the bottom! This explained the murky water. Our family got out immediately for fear of infection risks. There was a dislodge pool light with its wiring exposed which we saw and reported to the front staff but nothing was done to it. We never got back into the pool area for the remaining of our stay.

We have decided to give this hotel whom we have loved to stay in a miss on our next trip to Miri. The management really need to revamp the hotel to compete with the numerous other hotels to choose from in Miri nowadays.

We stayed at 3 different hotels during our stay in Miri. This place was OK, BUT IT REALLY, REALLY, REALLY needs a face-lift. Some of the other reviews raise the same issues: Black hairs in the bathroom, bath, sink etc, soap dish not cleaned...and mould. The bathrooms are also very small (we were on floor 3). The breakfast was very good - although my omelette was undercooked. Plenty of choice. We didn't use the pool, it had the same look as the bathroom.

Stayed a few nights before and after a fishing trip out of the Marina. Very close to the Marina, ideal for shuttling goods to the boat. The pool is lovely and would be ideal for families with kids. Breakfast was sufficient but choice was limited. Rooms were the big let-down, very tired-looking.
The hotel is out of town and taxis were taking 15 minutes to arrive so not so good if you need to go to town frequently or urgently.

Room Tip: Pool-view room are the best, with a balcony, the other side of the hotel looks on to the car park an...

Parkcity Everly Hotel is a beach-front hotel located in MIri just outside the city center. This means it is generally quieter than other hotels but that its immediate surroundings have very little by way of food & entertainment. If you don't plan on leaving your hotel much, this may be the place for you. Otherwise I'd encourage you to look elsewhere.

I must admit our first day at the hotel was not a pleasant one. Our room was so filthy we called house-keeping to come and clean it. They said they would send someone "immediately" which must be code for "10 minutes later" because that is how long it took for them to arrive. They were apologetic enough and admitted to being under-staffed. Management needs to look into solving this issue because all we saw was a room unfit for occupancy. They sent up a fruit basket as a way to smooth things over, so that was a nice gesture.

Some thing went awry with our check-in and we received a call at 9pm that very evening telling us we had been booked into the wrong room. They asked me to come down to the main desk to sort it out but unfortunately our names had disappeared from the system. Everything was fixed later that evening but could it not have waited until morning? 9pm isn't very late but I'd had a long day and wanted to settle in for the night.

WiFi is provided free of charge but the signal was rather weak. My Apple devices could not connect from the deeper half of the room but my Windows-based laptop had no issues. Go figure. I overheard other guests having the same issue so if you are unlucky enough to be in a room with a weak WiFi signal I hope you have a signal repeater.

The hotel boasts a beach-front which unfortunately is not maintained. I suggest caution when visiting the beach; it was littered with rubbish and I even saw a couple broken bottles. If the hotel insists on using the beach as a selling point I strongly recommend spending some effort to keep it clean. Much of the blame can (and should) rest on the shoulders of tourists who did not properly dispose of their refuse but the fact of the matter is that the quality of the beach will reflect on Parkcity Everly.

Being away from the city center, the hotel had the foresight to prepare a shuttle bus service for guests. The shuttle bus visits several shopping centres and tourist attractions including Bintang Megamall and the Miri City Fan. It leaves the hotel at pre-determined times and you will need to inform the front desk if you wish to use it. If no one asks to use the shuttle bus it will not leave. But if you need to make your way back to the hotel by taxi, the hotel's distance may force the driver to ask for a little bit extra. Exercise caution or your negotiation skills here.

I know my review does not sound very positive but one of the hotel's saving grace was it's staff. I found them to be very professional, helpful and courteous. That goes a long way with me. The rooms also have a veranda facing the sea. Our room caught the morning sunshine which we used to dry some of our clothes.

Other facilities the hotel has that I did not use: swimming pool, gym (open from 7am-9pm) and a bar with live music on weekdays. I could not hear the live music from my 4th floor room.

The bottom line is that it is difficult for me to recommend Parkcity Everly Hotel to anyone who is a tourist. It seems best suited for individuals looking for quiet place away from the hustle and bustle of the city. If you're planning a wedding or a weekend training course, Parkcity Everly may be just the place for you.

Dear Sir/Madam,

Thank you very much for your review posted in TripAdvisor recently. We would like to apologise for all the inconveniences caused during your recent stay with us. We admit that there are rooms for improvement for our Housekeeping and Front Office services.

Barring any unforseen circumstances, the hotel is planning to complete the renovation programme for the rooms over the next 14 months to be on par with the competition and to provide the comfort to our guests. Your comment on the hotel wifi is well noted and on last Saturday, 28 June 2014, we have increased the Metro-E wifi bandwidth three fold with Telekom Malaysia to cater for the growing needs of our guests.

As for the hotel beach front, we are working with the local council on the general maintenance of the long stretch of beach. We have also instructed our landscape contractor to expand their cleaning area beyond the hotel perimeter.

Please contact the undersigned directly for your next visit to Miri or your next booking with ParkCity Everly Hotel Miri. We would like to thank you personally for your constructive comments.
