“Great Affordable Beach Resort”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 February 2008

We were at the Awana for two months from April to June 2007 on business. Many hotels would get boring after two months, but there was so much to do here that we never got tired of it.

The hotel is very spacious and airy. The lobby is open to the outside on one side and is 3-4 stories tall. It has many tables and chairs (which is great because the wireless internet is only accessible in the lobby, so there are many places to sit and relax). There is also a great coffee cafe in the lobby with incredible fruit smoothies and some decent food for lunch (sandwiches and salads).

The breakfast buffet was good, but occasionally there were bugs as its an open place. We rarely, if ever, ate at the Chinese Restaurant or the buffet for dinner. The Friday night outdoor buffet was worth it. We preferred the downstairs restaurant if we were eating at the hotel. However, just outside of the hotel there are several small restaurants that are excellent and really cheap. The Chinese Restaurant on the end facing the hotel was our personal favorite. The bar had reasonably priced drinks, and you can't beat the atmosphere - right outside on the 7km private beach. They also had decent singers out there several nights a week.

There are countless things to do here: private beach (very clean), golf, huge pool complete with children's play area and hot tub, tennis, billiards, great exercise room, and an awesome spa (it is so relaxing in there and the staff is great).

During our two months it was never really that crowded there, but during the school breaks in Singapore and Japan the places was crawling with school children, so you may want to check on that if you are looking to relax. I think there really is room here for families to play and couples to unwind.

I went to Awana Kijal as part of my honeymoon. Booked the room through the Genting Group website, thus i had some discount on the room rate (15% if i'm not mistaken). Everything went smoothly and all the charges was laid out clearly. No hidden charges whatsoever.

We went to Kijal by car from KL. It took me about 6 hours of leaisurely drive to reach the hotel. This include a quick detour to Kuantan for lunch.

Upon reaching the hotel, we were duly greeted by the staffs and the check in was smooth. They offered us a glass of cold juice which was nice, except for the fact that I couldn't enjoy it cause I was having a sore throat ;P. After that, we were shown to our room by the bell boy.

1st impression upon entering the room was good. It was clean and orderly. Furnitures a bit old, but still functioning well. There was a couch with a coffee table, a king size bed,air conds, a CRT TV (21" if I'm not mistaken) 2 work desk, wardrobe, a safe, and fridge. The only problem I had was with the TV remote which was behaving erratically at first, but turns out okay after sometime. One nice thing about the room was that it had a window that opens up from the bath to the room. For a couple on their honeymoon, this is quite a romantic set up.

Our room was on the same level with the reception counter. We got a room facing the beach and part of the golf course. The view was decent, but partly blocked by some trees. As it was the monsoon season, it kept raining the whole time we were there. But I'm quite sure that the view would be much better when the weather is good.

The hotel got a lot of facilities which caters to everyone. There's a spa, huge pool, watersports activities, golf range, etc. One would certainly be able to spend days in this resort without getting bored. The pool was especially nice. It was HUGE with varying degree of depth and a really nice set up. The different depth are also marked clearly by colored buoys. For some, this probably ruin the view of the pool, but for safety reason, I think this was great. It also keeps the kids away from the deep part of the pool so that the adult swimmers can swim freely without any annoying kids playing on a float bothering them.LOL. There also a few water rides and games in the pool. The kids would really enjoy the pool. For adults, there's a jacuzzi booth with warm waters where u can relax in . The jacuzzi do have some maintenance issue, but to me, it was still acceptable as it was clean and the water temperature was just nice. Neither too hot nor too cold.

The food was just okay I guess. Standard hotel food. To me, in Malaysia, the best food will never be available at the hotels. For real authentic taste, go to the hawkers or local restaurants. To give the hotel some credits, the breakfast buffet was quite okay with lots of varieties.

The staff was quite helpful and friendly. They smile and greet you whenever it's appropriate, was helpful when you need them to be,etc.

Overall, I'd say we had a nice stay at the hotel. But I'd recommend it more for families instead of couples as the hotels' ambience is more suitable for families and corporate functions. It is not so romantic as there will always be lots of people at the hotel. Not enough privacy for a couple to fully enjoy themselves, but a great place to spend time with families, especially those who have kids. I'll definitely would stay again at the hotel, but next time, I'll bring my family and younger brothers along. ;)

We stayed at the Timeshare - had 7 nights but only stayed 4.
Timeshare is seperate to Hotel - there are 4 appartment blocks, 3 of which are used for locals living there permanently and then one for the timeshare.
The room smelt musty, there was mould, the toilet leaked etc etc
The kitchen while partial did not even have tea towels or toaster - although we did manage to get tea towels from housekeeping.
There were these rules like - hang your washing outside and get FINED 100 ringits and our appartment looked out onto the residents who all hung their washing out. These other blocks had not been painted in years either. Room size was good.
Hotel large and flash, but too expensive. Good food at the shops at the gate, which is infact as close as the Hotel.
The beach was great, water incredibly warm and the swimming pool was excellent too (thank goodness).
This resort is also very isolated, we rented a car for 2 days and ran out of things to do.
If you just want to swim, sun bath and read well this could be you.
We have travelled extensively through Malaysia a couple of times now and would not return here. This is the only experience we have had that have felt like not good value. It is a waste of your timeshare allocation as good hotels with better location are cheaper.

True, the service is nothing special and the place looks like it needs a little upgrading, but there are just lots of things to do, really. The food is great (chinese is superb, the steak is alright but the buffet is terrible). The beach is clean compared to other beaches on the mainland (not east coast). The swimming pool is quite fun (if there are no kids conquering the play area) and the massage at the spa is so heavenly. I love the volcanic mud wrap..i feel sooo rejuvenated after the spa experience. We even went to a pasar malam nearby, went to kerteh, etc. Our room is quite spacious but the walls are quite thin (believe me!). It was a great experience but it could have been better if the staff were a tad courteous and friendly. But i definitely would come again because of the spa and delicious foods

Went during off season, the pool and amenities were all running but there was no atmosphere.

The rooms were clean but quite dated, needs a revamp.

There was only one restaurant opened. The bar was closed.

I would recommend to eat outside in once of the restaurants that are in walking distance, it is much cheaper.

The hotel rate is quite cheap at 230RM and there is alot of amenities during mid-high season. I guess it was just a bad time to go.

This timeshare is a block of units associated with the resort. There are 5 levels of units no lifts or elevators, no ground floor units, all units start at 1st floor level there is only stairs, 2 flights per level. The let down was the kitchen, 2 element electric hotplate, 1 small electric jug, 1 pot, 1 frying pan. There was no microwave, no toaster, no cooking utensils and no tea towels. We realize that this was a partial kitchen, but I would expect at least these appliances, utensils, and tea towels.
No hot water over the hand basins or the kitchen sink.
Water was brown looking out of the taps, you have to run the taps for a while for the water to clear. The drinks and restaurant charges are expensive, as Malaysia goes. The resort (when we complained about the kitchen) expected you to use the restaurant, if the charges were more reasonable, we would have used these facilities, plus10% service charge.
Timeshare uses note that at the end of the driveway by the main road is a block of shops, with 4 restaurants plus KFC, and a minimart (groceries) a 3 min walk. The prices here are very reasonable. You definitely need a car to enjoy the area.

Me and my husband visited Awana Kijal Golf Resort 21-23 July 2006. It's a huge place with both hotelrooms and apartments. Lots of things to do, specially for children and there were a lot of families there. We had a premier room with a see view, quite ok and enough space but the doors to the toilet and bathroom were a bit odd. We do not golf so we have no idea about that but we do like to swim and since we don't have children the beach was perfect for us. The beach is quiet, white and long! We tried the chinese restaurant and it was ok, and we also tried the restaurant by the pool with western cuisine - we really liked the pizza! It's rated a 5-star hotel but we consider it more like 3-star +, it feels like a huge European tourist hotel. The service is ok but nothing special. The rooms are ok but not on the top. And no balcony facing the ocean. The coccroaches on the breakfast buffe (running around the food!) brings minus to the star rating.
