“Beautiful Seaview”
Reviewed 3 September 2013

A peaceful place to stay away from stressful urban life. A nice gateway with family while enjoying beautiful sight of east coast beaches of Malaysia, facing the wide open sea of South China Sea. Located quite remote from the town, one cannot expect much from this resort but just a very relaxing experience.

We had booked 3 nights at Sutra. We stuck out the first night and left the next day!

We booked through Hotels.com and it was advertised as "Sutra Beach Resort & Spa" - there was no spa!! I asked the receptionist how I could book a massage and she informed me that the "spa" had permanently closed.

On arrival we were put into a "beach front" room which had two single beds in it. I had emailed the hotel prior to our arrival to specifically restate that we wanted a double bed. We then had to change rooms to the opposite end of the resort. Our new room was infested with cockroaches, the sheets were stained, the pillows were ancient, and the overall upkeep was just so lacking. Needless to say we had a rough sleep!

The resort is miles from anything, so you really are stuck there. The restaurant was horrible, the food was average, and we were invaded by tons of flies while trying to eat (quite disgusting to be honest). One of the male staff members kept clearing his throat in a revolting hoicking manner, which was enough to put you off your meal.

Like other raters have written, people do wear all their clothing in the pool - thought I could handle that, but it was just too much! It felt grotty. The beach was nothing to write home about and was covered in rubbish.

You have to walk under old coconut trees along the pathways that look as though they could drop one on you at any moment - bit concerning. Our overall feeling was that the staff are rather lazy, they move slowly and wouldn't dare "go the extra mile", and nothing is maintained to a good level. Truly is a waste, as some hospitality training and a new vibe could really make the place a lot better.

Travelers beware and book elsewhere!

This is the best hotel to escape i would said...... it is next to the south China Sea... you could enjoy directly the sea view from the pool itself till the sea...... Perfect living as this resort was hidden in so urban inside the urban.... Love urban ? Sea view? this is the best place you could enjoy. Was here the third time straight in continue year... will back here again ^^

The seaview room is highly recommended as you can catch the view of the sea directly from the bed itself. Overall the property looks tired and needs some upgrading work to be done. We arrived early at the resort since we took the 1st flight out to Terengganu and were pleasantly surprised we were allowed to check in early. As a secluded resort, it should provide more services ie spa ( it has been closed since January ), bicycles for hire or even a half/fully stocked minibar. Since it was a weekday during the puasa month, the resort was relatively quiet. Breakfast in the morning was simple but sufficient. I requested for a cup of coffee and the coffeehouse staff pointed to one end corner, indicating I should get the coffee myself. I felt the least he could do since he wasn't doing anything was to get the 1st cup for me and then politely point out that I could get a refill at the corner itself. In summary, the resort is suitable if you want a quiet place to just relax, swim and walk along the beach.

I booked for 4 rooms for my family. The seaview wa great and the pool was great as well. But the rest were a nightmare. The cafe staff were rude, i asked them to get a candle for me to get rid of the flies (the flies were everywhere) but he asked me to get it myself instead. The food were badly taste, the room was dirty. The bed sheets, door curtains were rustic n stains were everywhere. The access to the room from the car park was terrible. I brought my grandmother aged 78 years old and she had difficulties to walk all the way from the car park to the room as she needed to climb n descending the stairs. I strongly contend that the price of rm190++ per room per night is worth the value at all. If the management wont take any steps to improvise i would never return to this place ever again. Stay away from this resort!

Booked 2 seaview rooms with connecting door for our family of 6 for 3 days and 2 nite stay. Breathtaking view of the sea, sunset, sunrise and peaceful surrounding, listening to the waves so calming. Hotel is about 10 min to jetty merang to redang island. Staff En Azizan was helpful to arrange for a day snorkelling trip.Overall staff were friendly and service was good. Yes, room is small and wall is thin. Could hear the movie kids watching even though low volume. The hotel needs major refurbishment and upkeep. Deco can be improved. Good news, ceiling fans were installed at lounge! Free wifi at lobby.Agree that pool attire should be enforced. Have early breakfast to avoid crowd.
I must compliment the staff Cik Wati and hotel for their effort to contact me and made arrangement to courier the mobile phone charger that I accidentally left behind. Thank you!

I share other comments about the swimming pool it really is delightful and the star attraction of the hotel, and when I swam it was clean. Although really close, you need to be a mountain goat to venture to the 'beach' loads of concrete blocks clearly erected to stop erosion by the sea are an eyesore. Although the view out over the sea of Pulau Redang is great.
Breakfast is passable, although despite numerous attempts cooking an easy-over egg without breaking it alluded them. Hard when you try to do it with a small shabby looking frying pan and a wooden spoon. However, breakfast was passable.
Rooms are large enough, generally cleanliness is poor, it's seems a Malaysian standard to do just enough, get by with the bare minimum but never a good job.
Staff were friendly enough, WiFi had it moments but when it went down they re-set it quickly.

Lounge area was fan-less and unless there was a really strong sea breeze, uncomfortably hot.
A few ceiling fans or even stand fans would have been all that was required, but no-one is bothered. The 'bar' in the lounge seems to have been closed down, never saw it open, shame really, with some care the lounge / bar would be quite nice.

Food at the restaurant is pricey, think KL prices, local food is fine, Western options not so, although my Son liked the Spaghetti, Carbonara. I think they know options close by are very limited / non-existent. I would not like to be stuck here without transport.
It is frustrating that a resort on the beach serves frozen Dory from a hypermarket rather than take advantage of locally caught fresh produce, but it gets back to the do the bare minimum approach.
I share someone else's comment about folk swimming / messing around in the pool in normal clothes, it really is unhygienic, why even bother with the big notice "shower before entering the pool', I appreciate Muslims have dress code but there are appropriate swimming costumes on the market and swimming in normal clothes should be banned. It must play havoc with their pump and filtering system.

Would I stay again, yes, we went for the Equine 80 km Endurance Ride and it's close the TIEP and we couldn't find anything better. Would I come here for a weeks 'holiday' probably not.

Room Tip: Rooms near the lounge get WiFi, other do not. Check you Air Con is working and has a controller.
