“A gem”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 September 2013

I really am keen on Captain's Longhouse. It is definitely meant for a younger, crowd on a tight budget, but that is not code for "cheap" or "dirty." In fact, Captain's is quite clean and the beds are cozy. Dorm beds run around 30 RM a night.

The best part of Captains is that t is on it's own corner of the beach, so it's quite and their shady garden fll of hammocks and table is a great place to relax. Kapas is a beautiful island meant for relaxing, and I can't think of a better place to enjoy it from. At the Jetty, take a right and walk to the end.

This was the most I've shelled out for a hotel room in Malaysia and was really disappointed with what my money got me. I paid 70RM for a small room with a rubbish mosquito net. The rooms also open up at the top onto the dorms and other rooms so you can hear people very clearly and if they wished they could could look over and see into your room. There were only two toilets (showers in the toilets) and a maximum capacity of 35 guests, you don't need to be a mathematician to know that is never going to work. The Longhouse is also located toward the end of the beach where a teenagers activity camp is so you can enjoy shouting, chanting and megaphones throughout the day.

The place did have a really nice communal area and the place is really nice and clean. Accommodation can be a real squeeze on Kapas so if this is the only place you can book I would do it. We still had an excellent time on Kapas despite our below average accommodation.

Personally I would try for Kapas Beach Chalets (KBC), they have nice beach huts for 60RM plus they have the best restaurant on the island.

It is a really nice hostel on the small charming island of Kapas. Dormitory for 30rm or a room for 70rm. This longhouse is extremely well decorated, clean and confortable. Beautiful terrace and clean shady garden with plenty of couches, armchairs, hammocks. You can spend the day easily swimming in the clear water and relaxing under coconut trees. Cayaks available to explore surroundings. Don't serve food anymore but next to the Koko restaurant, the best one of the island.
Good chances to stay with many french people ;)

The captains longhouse is styled after the longhouses of borneo. It has 8 rooms ( sleeps 2-3 people each ) and a dorm which sleeps about 12 people. There are also 3 beds on the verandah. It costs rm30 per head in the dorm, and rm35 per head in the rooms (min 2 people per room). Cheap for the lovely ambience!

The decor is funky.....lots of bright coloured bedding, pillows and mosquito nets... and all sorts of knick knacks ranging from bones, shells, buoys and even a piano!

There is no air conditioning but enough table fans to go around. There are only 2 bathrooms shared by all which are adequate. Water pressure is low, but enough to take a shower if there isnt someone using the other bathroom. There is a washing machine if you have a lot of laundry.

The guys looking after the longhouse were friendly, forever cleaning the place and very helpful.

The beach just in front if the longhouse is great. There's even some coral further out, where you can snorkel quite safely in the evenings when the tide is out.

The downside is the longhouse did not have a functioning restaurant, so eating was a bit difficult. It did have a 'bar' which serves soft drinks, and provided us with hot drinking water too. For food, we had to go to neighbouring Koko. The food there was local malay dishes, but order several hours earlier as they were shirt staffed. They charged about rm150-200 for 8 people for rice, 2 dishes and soft drinks.

All in all, the longhouse is great for budget travellers, but not for those who need a lot of privacy.

A few friends and I live in the area and had been to Pulau Kapas on a day trip, and since it was convenient to KT, we decided to spend a night there (or maybe two). We decided on the Captain's Longhouse because the beach looked the nicest on that side of the jetty.

Even before we got on the boat, the proprietor Natasha was already helping us figure out our plans. See, Pulau Kapas isn't really open during the monsoon season, and we were coming to the island just as things were starting to get set up. Natasha set the bar low, telling us that all of the amenities at the hostel weren't yet up and running, but that we could check it out and see what we thought, and make a day trip if we weren't satisfied.

Once we got there, we felt immediately at home. The longhouse is a real specimen of Sarawak style architecture, with a long dormitory room down the middle and private rooms along the side. Either way, the prices were economic for our party on a budget. The beach is calm, warm, and wonderful. There are hammocks in the shade, which are great for laying out when you want to read a book or get away from the beach. There is also a table area for congregating, talking, playing cards, or generally enjoying your friends' company. All around wonderful accommodations.

Though the real reason I'm writing this review is because of the extreme efforts Natasha went through to make sure we were having a whole experience though the place was not yet up and running. The main concern was the food, which was hard to come by since most of the restaurants on the shop were closed. She still offered that our group of 9 could eat with her and the staff, and we all had a lovely meal together. I'm not sure if that's a common feature of the hostel, but it felt really nice. She was also very relaxed about us bringing our own munitions (re: alcohol) to the island, and allowed us refrigerator space as needed. Moreover, she arranged to find gasoline for us so we could use the fire-pois at night. In the end, I didn't feel like any of the apologies being offered for the lack of amenities were really necessary. I think my group would feel the same way.

Actually, I'm sure they'd feel the same way, since we're going back this next weekend after work. I'm already excited.

A tip: As this is Terengganu, alcohol is kind of hard to come by anywhere in the state. There's some beer on the island and at the hostel, but Natasha didn't have a problem at all with us bringing our own. This might be different during the regular season, but it's good to know.

We found this place hidden away at the end of the beach and are so glad that we did. The rooms are great value for what they are and the vibe is amazing. If you like to get out of bed and straight into a hammock then this is for you. If you want activities and need entertaining then go to the Perhentians. After reading another review of this place I would say that there are some rats and squirrels about (as there are on any island) so just don't keep any food in your room and you'll be fine - we only had a visit as we had some sweets left out one night.

Overall this is an awesome place to stay for a week (or longer, as many people seem to do) and just chill out with friendly people and a book or two.
