“Great food!”
Reviewed 28 May 2013

We did not stay at this resort but did visit it for lunch one day. The hosts are a charming and friendly Dutch couple named Peter & Sylvia. The food, cooked mostly by Sylvia, is of almost gourmet standards. The beef shwarma my husband and I had was excellent :-) I would not hesitate to recommend this resort to anyone who is planning on visiting Kapas Island.

Peter and Sylvia are two of the loveliest hosts! Turtle valley is by far the best resort on the island - the rooms are basic but comfortable and clean. Sylvia's cooking is exceptional and she will do a small portion of anything for a child and charges accordingly.
It is true that you are cut off from the rest of the resort, unless you are prepared to walk up over the hill, but when they offer great food and drink at the resort you don't have to leave. We walked the length of the island and there are steps between each of the coves, so it's really not that hard to do - our 7 year old managed!
There are kayaks, tubes and snorkle equipment at the resort. They only charge for hiring the kayaks, and it wasn't expensive.
It was a really great place to get away from it all and relax...we will be back next year!

The island in general offers nothing spectacular. While the sandy beaches and crystal clear waters are remarkable despite it's littered with broken dead corals, there is hardly nothing to do here.

While it's great, food in general is poor and this place has one of the more expensive choices which doesn't stretch the money.

Beer is scarce. RM 12 per can at this place. The better location for beach is Kapas Beach Chalet on the other side though it's not as private.

RM170 per night isn't really value for money, the theme of this island. You're much better off in the surrounding islands.

Boat is RM40 return per person, carpark at Marang is RM7 daily. Most of the places on the island are run by Europeans.

For decent food, head to the local restaurant on a small hill just behind the Marang jetty. Local cuisine and value for money.

Although the hotel and rooms are really nice, service and prices were very disapointing. When we arrived we were struggling with our bags up the stairs, and Peter just kept laughing at us... Very unprofessional.
Then he listed all the rules you have to obey, don't put your feet directly in the bowl with water, but use the ladle because then there is less sand in the bowl...
As for diner, it is really good, but you kinda feel obligated to take the diner, which was 35 to 45 RM at the time (twice as much as in other places). You need to know what you want to eat for diner when you take your breakfast... it seems like a lot of places are run this way, be carefull if you'd like to wonder around for diner, because everything will be already full by 7pm!
For the rooms, there are no shades, so it's okay if you like to wake up at 7am with the sunrise but it's too bad for you if like to rest in the morning... And you have to take your breakfast before 9:30am.
The fan is quite powerfull, but unfortunately you will not feel the air moving at all if you put the mosquito net because it's really thick.... And it gets really hot when you don't feel the fan...
Peter nicely offered a mosquito repellent to plug in the wall, telling us he was allergic to mosquito bites and that this repellent was very effective to prevent mosquitoes from entering the room. Well maybe it works for him, but we got bitten every single night (and I can be sure it was during the night, because I got bitten on my butt...)
Our room was right next to the restaurant, which was very anoying because as there are no shades, everyone sitting in the restaurant could see us in the room...

We had to take a bus for Kuantan and were planning to go back to Kuala Terengganu very early to buy our tickets. When we told Sylvia she spontaneously offered us that Peter would buy the tickets for us while he was buying food at Kuala Terengganu. That way we wouldn't havet to go back there but just wait for the bus at Marang. So we were surprised and accepted her offer. It was a mistake, because the day after when she gave us the bus tickets, she charged us 45 RM for the "driving" Peter had to do to buy the tickets... She should have said so BEFORE buying the tickets! What is more we had a very long trip with the bus when leaving, and it was important for us to take the earliest bus for Kuantan. We saw at Kuala Terengganu that there was a bus at 9:30am, and Peter bought a ticket for a bus leaving at 10:30am... we are lucky we caught the last bus when transfering at Kuantan, if that bus arrived 30 minutes later, we'd have had to sleep at Kuantan ...
If you're travelling on a tight budget, be very careful when they "offer" you a service...
The beach is ok, but very rocky with dead coral, and not that big because there aren't enough chairs for all the guests to relax on...
As for laundry, in the end the laundry place was closed while we were there, so we didn't use it, but she said that it costs "a fortune"... so be warned...
It was kinda funny when we left and we were on the boat with the other guests leaving, they were all waving and saying bye, and Sylvia didn't answer but just kept on doing her cleaning...

In the end this place is good for people who don't pay attention to hypocrisy and who have a big budget.

I was reading through the several reviews and could not understand some of the negative responses I was reading there. We simply love this place and have just booked a visit for the third year in a row.
Visiting Kapas Turtle Valley simply makes us relax. Yes, there is not much to do on the Island, yes it is isolated, yes you have to eat in the resorts but guess what, all of that is GREAT.

Whenever we arrive at the island, we drop our bags, dump our phones and go into relax modus. You want to be entertained, you can be entertained. You want to do a trip, they will arrange it. You want to be left alone...... no problem, sit back and relax.

Sylvia is a great cook. She creates a wonderful combination of European and Asian food.Everything is fresh and we have been never disapointed.
She serves the dinner at a fixed time, so all the guests eat at the same time. A great moment to meet other guests, have a chat and drink a good glass of wine or beer with them, We have met some interesting people this way.

Breakfast with a Seaview, lunch in the shadown or the sun. A Sea-turtle laying her eggs on the beach. Small sharks and other fish swimming around you when you are snorkling in the bay and a good book while laying on your lazy beach chair.....

For us, this is a little paradise on earth, the ultimate place to relax. After 2 weeks of Kapas, we can survive for another year....

Believe the other reviews - we didn't stay there but went for a walk around the island and visited Turtle Valley. It can only be accessed either by boat or by hiking up and over very steep and dangerous steps - you will be cut off if you stay here and you will regret making this your choice! We were treated very badly by the male owner when we visited, he was extremely rude to us. It was also very sad to see Sylvia demean herself on more than one occasion after several drinks ... things are not right in any way at Kapas Turtle Valley
