“This accomodation is great! If you look for luxury don't go to Perhentian Besar!”
Reviewed 26 November 2012

I spent 10 days in this hotel and I found it LOVELY! I had a beach bungalow which was the best solution because I could watch everyday the sunrise and sunset. The room was simple along with the lifestyle of the island itself. I found from time to time some stains on the bed sheets, but you're on an island in the middle of the sea, still pretty "virgin", so I didn't paid much attention to it. Everything was clean enough, really!
The resort itself also can offer you breakfast and all the other meals. Breakfast was always great, I always ate a lot, eggs, bacon, malaysian food, croissants, jam, juice, tea, coffee and so on. I also had lunch once, but it was pretty expensive and always preferred to eat in other places on the island.
The beach of the resort is one of the best beaches you will find on Perhentian Besar, the water is awesome and you can enjoy unforgettable sunsets from there.
I will always reccomend this place if you're not looking for luxury accomodations, otherwise I would reccomend to choose different islands, because you will find no luxe on Perhentian Besar.

The location is a given: right on the beach and the superbly clear, very salty, warm South China Sea beyond.
What a pity the property is a complete contrast. It's old, scruffy and not what the area deserves. Don't look at the pool, because it will leave a nasty taste in your mind. Green, swamp-like and not a nice place to be near. If you want a pool to use, I'd say it will be months before it is swimmable. The semi-detached cabin we were allocated had ill-fitting everything. The sliding door to the balcony couldn't be securely latched, the bedside table had switches for just about everything, but the room had none of the devices it suggested could be switched from there. Must have bought a job lot from a nearby hotel demolition site. TV switch? Yes. TV? No. Aircon? Yes. Cold air? No, but plenty of noise. Reminded us of rooms you see in movies where the fugitive holes up while on the run.
The staff attitude was indifferent and while we were not made to feel uncomfortable, neither were we made to feel valued guests. The breakfast was very tired even at the front end of the service time and guests as a captive audience are asked to pay high restaurant prices for average food.
If it weren't for the surrounds that nature has blessed this area with, there would be no reason to visit this hotel.
Oh, and for uncomfortable sun lounges scattered along its beachfront, the Perhentian Islan Resort takes first prize. Islan? Yes, the big proud sign on the sea wall was missing the d. Said it all about this place.

Room Tip: If you must go here, choose a room as far away from the pool as you can. Never know what creatures m...

We stayed for a week at the resort and although the beach was amazing the hotel was very dated and in need of modernisation. Our room was very basic and not something you would expect from the most expensive resort on the island. Plus the beach loungers were uncomfortable and few and far between. I would go back to Perhentian Islands but not this resort.

This hotel was a real disappointment. We arrived early in the day and the hotel did kindly let us check in but the room they gave us was disgusting - old, dirty, unbearably hot. The air conditioning unit (so essential in this heat) was ancient - it did not work and was very noisy, and the vents were filthy. The bathroom was dirty - there were clear marks from the last guests and the toilet was disgusting. There were insects splatted all over the wall which shows previous guests had had a problem. It was not acceptable so we asked to be shown a different room, but all of the so-called 'superior' rooms seemed the same - superior rooms were at the back of the resort, away from the sea front and seemed completely neglected. Instead they looked out over the swimming pool - this had clearly not been used in a long time, it was green, smelly and full of insects. We finally reluctantly decided to pay a little extra to upgrade to one of the sea view rooms to try and make the best of our stay here. This was still not an amazing room but the position was lovely.

Despite the problems with the rooms, the main issue at Perhentian Island Resort was the complete lack of atmosphere – there did not seem to be any sign of other guests staying there and many things weren’t available. For example, there was a sign advertising a buffet breakfast / lunch / dinner, but this was only available at breakfast for a couple of days. The bbq dinners were not running. I’ve already mentioned the swimming pool was not available. This meant that it was a depressing atmosphere and not somewhere we wanted to relax and spend time in the evenings. It was also very expensive to eat / drink at the resort. We ended up walking to nearby resorts for dinner every night and found a much nicer environment and better and cheaper food.

Finally, the icing on the cake with PIR was just how rude and unhelpful all of their staff were to us during our stay. We did not understand why – Malaysian staff elsewhere on our trip were wonderful. It really felt like they did not want our business.

I would definitely not recommend this hotel to others – there are far better options on Perhentian Besar.

This hotel is on the best beach in the Perhentian Islands. I don't understand why management are not picking up on Trip Advisor reviews and taking notice of what people are saying. Most hotels we have visited on our travels for the last 6 months are proud to display their Trip Advisor Awards. This hotels as described in other reviews is just how it is. The toilet was the dirtiest I have seen in a hotel, the towels were also dirty and to be honest I don't know how they had the nerve to leave them in the room. The pool was green and looked as though t had not been cleaned for sometime. The breakfast was just as bad and the staff just stood around until you left before they cleared the table. To be honest I could go on for ages but I think most people have covered how bad this hotel is.
Perhentian Island Resort managment should be ashamed of themselves for running such a shoddy, poorly maintained hotel when they are located on a paradise beach.

Room Tip: stay at this hotel for the location and snorkelling only and go across the walkway way to Coral View...

Stayed there for 2 nites on a 3D/2N packages last week. This hotel didn't book the speed boat for us (46 of us) despite 2 months of notice. Then, they forgot to pay for the marine conservation fees. After a delay of 1.5 hours, all 46 of us squeezed into 3 speed boats (supposed to be 4 speed boats) after some angry comments by us.

My chalet room has 2 single beds and there are 4 of us (2 adults and 2 kids). Complained again and mgnt told me their twin bed means single bed. So when we asked for 2 twin beds, they gave us 2 single beds. How ridiculous can this be? Single = 1, twin = 2. But to them, twin = single = 1. Anyway, managed to changed to a bigger room with 1 twin bed and 2 floor mattresses. There are quite some wildlife in this resort. Shrews, monitor lizard (more than 1 metre long), snakes (jungle trek), bees and can be quite scary for some people.

Breakfast/lunch/dinner - don't expect anything good. The cook cooked just to get the food cooked. That's all. Barbeque dinner - meats are burnt. Tomyam soup - mostly oil.

Snolking - twice boats were delayed. And they repeat the same snolking site the second day noon session. Managed to convinced the boatman to change to better site for 1 of the stops. The different site was much better (at Perhentian Kecil).

Location wise, this resort is located at good site and pretty quiet too. Water is clean and just about 70-100 metres from beach, there's a site to see turtles.

Room Tip: If there is a choice, avoid this resort.
