“Not confortable heaven”
Reviewed 12 August 2014

This resort received till now not so good reviews and frankly speaking I can say that it is an example of a missed opportunity. The location is outstanding, surely the best in the beautiful Perhentian island.Bungalows are decent, absolutely not perfect, enough clean but not appealing and cared (and also there differences between the room). Food is also standard, anyway acceptable.
But what it lacks totally is the customer orientation. Personnel is active, sometimes more lazy, but it seems not managed, and it doesn't show a particular attention to customer needs.
Furthermore the beach, the wonderful beach in front of the hotel, shows few wooden, absolutely not comfortable sunbed, and nothing else. There are also few sun umbrellas but they are rented !!!
You cannot find a soft chair anywhere, there is not a bar also because alcoholics are not sold.
Internet works - at intermittence - in common areas, but try to ask help to the reception. You will not receive any support. There is also a decent swimming pool on the back of the structure, but I don't find any sense to use it given the spectacular sea water in front.
At the end I think you can find few better structures on Perhentian Island, but if you are searching for the right location Perhentian Island Resort has no competitor. The pity it is not managed as I outlined. You can accept very simple rooms but not a very low attention to the customer needs.

I was well informed thanks to other Trip Advisor reviews when booking this accommodation, so wasn't surprised when we found a tired resort in real need of some TLC and renovations. It is though a fantastic location which for us wasn't detracted from by the resort's shortcomings.

We were disappointed in many things about the actual accommodation and services including:
- room was dark, bathroom seemed a hundred years old, broken fittings, no water pressure, dirty toilet water etc.
- bedding was second rate with 'fitted sheets' being a sheet tied at the corners too big for a old oversized mattress
- staff were not friendly and completely ignored us at first when we were checking in when they didn't appear to have a booking for us - they did, but we were very stressed and they did little to alleviate those concerns
- no information provided about facilities, tours and restaurant hours etc. and no information booklet in the room other than the spa menu (because you pay for that) and the staff generally seemed liked they weren't interested in our enjoyment
- we really wanted to do a snorkeling tour but when it came time to go, there weren't enough people so they wouldn't take us. I only booked this resort to get in some great snorkeling during our Malaysia trip so you can imagine how disappointed we were. The snorkeling from the beach was great as a substitute but we know we could have seen more beautiful and plentiful underwater sights on the tour.

The buffet food was average and overpriced but we did have a couple of nice meals from the al-a-carte menu that were nice enough.

The pool was clean and a nice temperature and has great scenery around it. We went for a night time dip and had the pool to ourselves which was great.

Apart from the pool, all other positives all relate to the location, not the accommodation.

Beautiful place, great scenery, relaxing escape on a white sandy beach with no rocks/pebbles. The jetty made for great photos and the snorkeling from the beach was very nice, seeing many fish and sting rays in waist deep water was a treat for us.

We didn't walk to the other resorts and all I can say is thank goodness for the Trip Advisor reviews that I read beforehand so I knew what to expect.

We just came back from 4 nights at P.I.R. We got the deluxe room. The interior had dark wooden walls with low lightings & only one small window for abit of sunlight. Thus the whole room felt really dark and damp. The bathroom that we had was old with cracked basin with basic neccesaties.

The restaurant has nothing to write about with limited choices. We stayed in to dine at their restaurant on our first day and choices were very limited. Do not have buffet dinner as it was our most disappointing food experience. Again, do not waste 50 Ringgits p.p on buffet dinner. Literally 4 or 5 dishes (fried rice, fried noodle n carbonara) and some old desserts n fruits. Go for a hike to the Coral View Island Resort where they have a mini mart to stock up on your water bottle (cheaper than at P.I.R) or go to Mama Chalet. Better food and more options. If you are going to Redang Island after (like us) you cqn also organise your transfer by boat there. Suprisingly good. I'll write another review for our Itinerary from australia- KL- Perhentian- Redang-langkawi-Kl- Melb. We're currently in Redang ;).

The staff hmmm untrained or just not happy to work during Ramadan month. But some restaurant staff were friendly and helpful and they were quite reserve which is nothing wrong with that. Must be their culture. Staff at the snorkling and dive centre were nic as well.

Prior to booking this place, we were informed by other TripAdvisor reviews thus we were prepared for basic accommodations. We spent most of the time at the beach and snorkling. This place has its own beach with calm water and TURTLES. Seeing turtles that were close to the beach were really the highlights of our stay. After our cross thru the walk way to where all the chalets are, we realised that P.I.R has the best location!!! The beach on the other side, not sure if I can call that the beach. It was rocky, alot of dead corals on the shore, humid with interupted view. In fact, people from other chalets actually came over to P.I.R's beach. With other hotels on the main stretch, rooms were deep in the jungle, humid and noisy so not sure we would want to stay there. "The grass is not always greener on the other side".

Since we did not go on holiday to stay in the hotels, we overlooked the old, dated accommodations (although abit pricey for its standard) and rather enjoyed the beautiful beach, warm water and sea turtles. Total relaxation! We will stay here again purely for its location and serenity.

Over paid! I would rather stay in those budget chalet nearby! The water from shower is horrible! The smell of rust is so strong, we would rather bath with sea water than the room shower ! Basin water keep leaking no matter how you twist it! A very very very bad experienced ever!

This place is so bad! Overrated and overpriced! We got a (first) room on the beach with dirty sheets, broken toilet! After we mentioned this we got a room lesser then we paid because no other room was available (no refund- you can order food/drinks), arrogant receptionist laughed when we mentioned the "issues" - big disappointment!!

The resort has by far the most beautiful location, stunning beach and surroundings on the island, however the entire establishment is in need of an upgrade. Rotten walls because of water damage, dead mouse in the ceiling, no functioning internet and a non useable restaurant. My group of nine did by dine there one single evening. All in all it does not seem like the hotel management want to earn money or please the guests for that matter. The staff did the best they could, but several days the people that cleaned the rooms forgot to clean our bungalow and we had to ask for the right amount of towels several times. One evening a turtle came up on the beach to lay eggs, however the resort had no procedures on how to handle such situations, so locals ended up stealing the eggs to sell and eat before we could do anything. The hotel manager told us he had been down there, but then obviously done nothing. He also lies to us about the procedures, which we got to know from a local dive instructor the day after. I personally find it horrifying that the resort does not take responsibility for the turtle eggs, after all it is the amazing marine park they earn their money on. All in all the bungalows are good, as long as you get the beach front ones. Other people living in the ones further back told us about rats and iguanas running around their doorstep. The breakfast is for most Europeans not very consumable, so foodwise I would recommend Watercolors or Coral View.

We recently planned a 5 day long weekend in Perhentian diving but since this is super peak season now, we were left with a few options in the Perhentian Besar (Big Island in Bahasa).

When I rang the Perhentian Island Resort sales office in KL, I was told that only Semi-suite units were available and went ahead and booked 2 units. However we were told upon check-in that the semi suites were no longer availble and were asked to take two deluxe rooms instead that are close to the end of the beach.

The deluxe rooms are run down, dirty and the tbathrooms are less than basic. There's a leak in my bathroom and dead rat (!!) next to the balcony. Even after complaining, no actions were being taken.

The hotel manager eventually got us the suites which are much decent. They are beach facing, clean(er) and well kept although bathrooms are still very basic. Housekeeping was done hastily everyday.

Facilities at the resort are poorly maintained - we experineced power cuts every day (sometimes when I was in the shower) and no water for one of the days we were there. The rooms definitely need some upgrading.

Breakfast was plain awful. Very little options. Poorly managed banquet staff and not well trained at all.

All in all, the rainforest, sandy beach and crystal clear water made up for the resort's poor maintenance.

Food options? Coral View Resort offers ok options for lunch. Or further down the bay, there are one big Thai restaurant and a small convenient store/cafe which also serves food. The big restaurant has better options but EXTREMELY rude service. We were told to leave the restaurant when they saw that us buy drinks from the convenient store next door. If you do not mind, take a water taxi across to Perhentian Kecil (Small Island) where there are more options. My recommendations: pizzas and cocktails at Oh-LaLa bar (in front of Panaroma Resort) and Bubu Resort Restaurant

Tips for divers:
- Diving is fantastic! The Pro-Divers dive shop is a 10 minute walk away from the Perhentian Island Resort (next to Coral View Resort), 5 star PADI certified.
- Do not miss dive sites: Tokong Laut (Temple of the Sea) and Sugarship Wreck

Room Tip: Ask for semi suites by the beachfront.
