Coral View Island Resort
Reviewed 12 April 2012

This hotel is in a great location within swimming distance of coral and fishes. Although much of the coral right next door to the hotel has died off, there is plenty within easy swimming distance. The hotel itself is sited on a nice sandy beach.

The hotel was built about 20 years ago with a few rooms renovated more recently. The rooms we looked at were ok, but the bathrooms have not aged particularly well. Nothing seriously wrong with them, but things like chipped/missing grouting, wobbly taps, bit of a musty smell (but at least they do have a ventilation fan). Aircon works ok, but again is a little elderly and not split units (the compressor is part of the unit), hence a bit noiser.

The beach front rooms are nice because you can sit out in front of the room and look out over the sea. Some nice touches are drying rails and 4 chairs for a 2-3 person room. We looked at a hill view room, but really they aren't so nice - their outdoor seating areas aren't particularly good and you have lots of steps to negotiate to get to and from the room. I would recommend close study of the room chart on their website to select a nice room.

Food and beverage is generally ok but a bit pricey (but then everywhere else is). Juices, freshly grilled fish etc were fine. Avoid the pancakes - they have a special pancake machine that produces extremely poor results (imagine a very heavy batter that has been heated to the point where it congeals - light and fluffy it aint). Satay wasn't really marinated correctly. If you fancy malay food one option is to take an (expensive) water taxi across to the fishing village on the small island, and go for the roti / nasi kandar stalls over there. You aren't going to save money but you get some proper malay food.

The staff are very friendly and helpful. The lady manager on front desk was particularly helpful and friendly. She really made our stay a pleasure.

Overall I would recommend this place if you want somewhere simple to stay near to the coral and go for a beach front or near beach front room.

We stayed for 4 nights at this resort. We had read all the Trip reviews and pretty much knew what to expect roomwise and it reflected our conclusions. We booked the sea view chalets and asked for 319, we got 318 and honestly think it was a slightly better location as it had a hammock directly in front of us whereas 319 was tucked back a little more right next to the scuba school there were a couple of big metals signs about the beach that might have slightly obscured the beautiful beach view. i would never even consider the rooms towards the back of the resort..dreadfuly crammed in and no views whatsoever.
. We decided against the full board option and it was a good decision. Buffet Breakfasts were MYR25 and wellpresented and filling although one day seemed slightly less varied. The coffee was great, as was the roti and curry sauce. they did gret omlettes and eggs cooked to order. We usually skipped lunch and found the evening menu very reasonable and varied and tasty especially the black pepper sauce. We did try the Watercolours restaurant and whilst good, they had no wine although it was on the menu and both nights we tried they had no BBQ option as advertised because their cook was away. there was a little bar sandwiched between CVR and watercolours they had wine but it was pot luck if it was white, rose or red all at room temperature and about MYR100 for nothing special, beer really the only option, we did take in some duty free spirits and we used to buy fruit juices from the CVR and then top them up on our verandah... all allowed

All in all coral view had a great location for the restaurant next to the beach, boat taxi's were plentiful but on stormy days you have to go the long way around to Coral Bay on Kecil instead of the cheaper option to long beach. World cafe on Kecil was a good place to kick back duriing the day

Finally snorking at Turtle beach was awesome we saw black tipped sharks and many many fish, but if you snorkle around the headland infront of coral view watch out because my husband ended up finding the sewage outlet by mistake and had to snorkle thru flushed out toilet paper.... a shame because everything else was so good... the souvenir shop had some nice clothing and at very reasonable prices .. sarongs MYR25 , long pants about MYR50 and a ovely skirt with matching top for MYR60, i found a similar set in KL and they were asking MYR180 way too much....

We would stay @ CVR again, we did pop into the PIR it was well laid out and probably looked more westernised in layout and space. good beach but much dead coral, best coral in front of PIR was the other side of the beach to the jetty towards the furthest rocks, much dead coral too where the boat lanes are, but at least the boats are now restricted as to where they can go...

We did the jungle walk to Flora Bay across the island, it mainly followed a water pipe and brought you to the local rubbish tip behind the Arwana resort .. the beach was filthy and we just jumped on a taxi boat straight back to CVR. Abduls loooked nice from the boat too.

Room Tip: take nothing but seaview rooms... or no further than 2 rows back from beach otherwise you are in a...

The Perhentian islands are really beautiful with a great relaxed vibe and good but very chilled nighlife. Coral view Island Resort is in a great location with access to bars/restaurants without the need to get many boats at night. Its right next to the best beach and has a good dive school. The diving is very good with the chance to see Sharks, rays, turtles etc close by, the restaurant and service is very good too (although no alcohol which is fair enough).

The chalets are good and rooms very nice although the bathrooms could really do with updating. Our bathroom was far more basic than most I have experienced in hostels at a fraction of the cost. It also has cockroaches in it although the staff were quick to come and clean and spray they would come back. I know you expect this on a rustic island such as this but I feel for the money they should update the bathroom which would help the problem.

Choose a deluxe chalet as they have a good balcony/deck at the front and more space/fridge in room. There is no wifi but there is at a place 2 mins walk up the beach that has it.

If the bathrooms were upgraded then I would have given it 5* as I really enjoyed my time here.

Room Tip: Deluxe Room

Our first choice was the Tuna Bay but it was fully booked. We got in touch with Anjung Holidays and told them what we wanted and they came up with The Coral View Island Resort. After a long journey with the kids by plane, and plane again and taxi and speedboat we were hoping for somewhere to relax into for a week. We had a family room just back from the beach. Immediatly the kids loved it, watching the monkeys and bats as dusk fell.
The room was comfortable and we had a very large balcony complete with ample seating for us all. The lighting wasn't very bright in the room. The bathroom was clean.

We ate in all the local restaurants and enjoyed Watercolours the most. There was nothing wrong with the restaurant in Coral View, and we ate there at lunchtime as well as breakfast, but as they didn't serve alchohol our evenings were spent elsewhere.

The best thing about the Coral View is its' location. It is placed between the up market PIR and the sandy beach on one side and all the best restaurants on the other side.

The service was a little cold but overall we had no complaints. We took boats to various other bays, including to the Tuna Bay.

The snorkelling was far better by the Tuna Bay Resort, and the beach is far more laid back and less crowded there, but the swimming for the kids was better by the PIR, so all in all if we were to return next year we wouldn't mind which resort we chose - both would appear to have their strengths and weaknesses.
We would highly recommend Anjung Holidays who booked our room, saw us onto the right boat, arranged an early morning private transfer back to the mainland and arranged our taxi back to the airport. They met us at the jetty on return and our dealings with them throughout were efficient and speedy. From what we could gather it cost us nothing extra to let them do all the hard work for us.

You really do have to choose your chalets very carefully.

The resort is shockingly overdeveloped and pretty much all of the hill-view chalets are either looking at the rubbish under another chalet or right onto a concrete path. They are also so closely packed in together that you feel you're in a slum of some sort. Add in constant generator noise and it's the opposite of what you'd expect from a beach resort holiday.

Having said this, the beach view and garden view chalets look a lot better but I would recommend looking for another resort that has a more sustainable and less greedy approach to development.

The only good thing I can say about our stay here is that our chalet was so bad (even though we "upgraded" to another part of hill-view that actually had natural light and a great view of staff quarters and the generator shacks), we had to spend all our time exploring the beautiful Perhentian Islands in a homeless kind of way. Not very relaxing though.

Room Tip: Beach view or garden view chalets. Otherwise forget it.

My partner and I stayed here for 6 nights and found it to be far superior to the nearby Perhentian Island Resort and a lot cheaper. There is no pool and there is a lot of variety between rooms. We stayed in a basic room with a fan for one night which was not very nice but we then had a more deluxe room with air conditioning and sea views which was a lot better and well worth the extra money. The rooms are quite nosiy as they have tin roofs which you can hear monkeys playing on and things falling from the trees. There is a lot of wildlife around here with monitor lizards, flying squirrels, bats and monkeys which was great to see (but the bats do fly awfully close to you at sunset!). The staff were friendly and helpful. The restaurant was pretty good value and we ate here a lot (although watercolours restaurant is better). The rooms were pretty clean but not perfect.
Overall, Perhentian islands are expensive and booked up in advance. I think this hotel was better value for money than the rest and a easy walk to the best part of the beach.
EXTRA TIP: Also we tried the dive company next door but was not that impressed. The snorkelling here is great and the people at this resort organised the best trip for us where we saw sharks and turtles (shark beach, turtle beach tour). Would definitely recommend this!

Room Tip: Book in advance if you can and get a deluxe room with sea view if you can afford the extra!
