“Great hotel on a magnificient spot. Romantic paradise like.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 March 2010

The resort has been set up very nicely. They even got a price for best garden-architecture. The rooms are individual wooden chalets. And not 2 rooms seems to be the same, the inside walls are decorated with great woodwork. The rooms have 24 hour a day electricity through their own generator.
The bathrooms are made of stone and tiled, but because of the salty water that runs from the taps and shower in summertime the tiles has some spots that looks like dirt, but it is just a harmless discolouration because of the salty water. The rooms were cleaned every day, we got new towels and bedsheets everyday.
The staff is friendly but mostly very poor in English language skills, they were all very helpful and did the extra mile.

The resort has one of the best beaches on the island with a coral reef just in front of the restaurant. The diveshop in the resort offers all courses and we took our diving lessons there as well, again great service, great staff and skilled instructors.

Some people did complain about this resort but it belongs to the best in Terengganu. We have travelled a lot through Malaysia and during the 14 years we travel in Malaysia we have seen hotels with great websites, expensive sales-offices but very poor service and quality. Coral View Island Resort is a gem among the best.

Go in Perhentian for snorkeling, diving.
This hotel is located in a beautiful place, just 2 steps and you are snorkeling in the middle of the fish.
The room are not very clean and bathroom, is not european standard. Price is quite high compare to quality.
The restaurant is really poor, but you have other restaurants at 2 minutes from there.
Some better options at lower price in the island, see other "specialty lodging".

This "resort" has the filthiest bathroom I have ever seen or experienced. For the price of RM 280 / USD 80 it is utterly shameful that a place like this can exist. Their price tiering is comparable a 4 or 5 star hotel.

I'm a Malaysian (born and raised) and have stayed in hotels across the United States, Europe and of course Malaysia.

To all visitors who have stayed at this "resort", note that the bathroom standard at Coral View Island Resort is by no means the local Malaysian standard. It is disgusting by ANY standards especially for the price they charge. It is comparable to a mamak stall toilet.

I felt compelled to address this issue to at least clear up the impression of Malaysian toilets in general. Of course filthy toilets/bathrooms exist here but it is based on a "you pay for what you get" basis.

I brought my American girlfriend here and it was her first time visiting Malaysia and she assumed it was normal to pay such prices with bathrooms / facilities like this.

For the price of RM280 here, you would at least get a free breakfast. This place charges RM20 for a breakfast of dry sardine sandwiches, a couple of different cereals, some noodles and omelettes.

An ice lemon tea can cost anywhere from RM5 to RM7 depending on the wait staff. I ordered this drink 3 days in a row and I paid, RM7, RM5 and RM6 respectively on each day.

It makes my skin crawl when I think of the smell and condition of the bathroom.

This place is truly a disgrace to the hospitality industry and Malaysia in general.

We booked here last minute into the deluxe garden chalets through a travel agent (after waiting weeks for a booking confirmation from Flora Bay). Front desk staff were fine, polite and spoke good English. No waiting to get our rooms, we checked in around 10.30am. The chalets are quiet, rather dark inside (easily fixed by brighter light bulbs) but with hot water, mini fridge, a fan, a/c and 24 hour electricity, not like many of the other hotels. The room and bathroom were clean, and cleaned everyday. We didn't see so much as a cockroach (not like one of our friends at Impiani who woke up to find rats in her room!)

Outside from the small veranda, you can sit and read or watch sugar gliders, squirrels and birds in the trees. There are even monkeys in the trees at the back of the perhentians island resort next door.

From our trips around the island, Coral view looked to be the best option, mainly because it is quiet and away from the other resorts (being at the end of the beach) but still only 30 secs from the water and a few mins walk from 3 other hotels (and restaurants). There's some snorkelling available on the beach or go next door to the perhentians island resort for soft, silky sand - perfect for swimming.

The food wasn't great anywhere, and we were disappointed as we were expecting yummy Malaysian food. But everywhere wanted to cater to western food instead. So there were the usual boring options. Alcohol is scarce - the Coral View doesn't serve it at all - but elsewhere down the beach you can find Carlsberg and the odd bottle of wine.

Suggest bringing your own alcohol (if that's your fancy), lots of insect repellent, and a pack of cards to play over dinner. All the hotels have little kiosks selling cold water, snacks etc. Snorkel gear is available cheaply to rent too, as the are taxi boats.

And DON'T pre-book your boat transfers as it limits your choices. We did and were refused passage on the early 7.30am boat (which the travel agent had said we could get), and had to wait till 9.30am. They also put up through this silly pantomine trying to make us pay again. The Coral View agents at Kota Besu are also entirely useless despite being sweet as pie, so a quick stop in to register you as being there, and then don't hang around.

We booked 3 nights in the best room (Deluxe Suite sea view), for a price of 500 MYR for night (we paied 400 MYR for an executive room at Hilton Kuching).

The location of the room was absolutely beautiful, directly on the beach. We met 2 guys on the beach leaving the resort because they had "some little problems" (we imagine they were referring to insects/animals in the room).
We entered the suite and we found 3 rooms: 1 living room, 1 bedroom and the bathroom.
The first problem is that the suite has a lot of windows but without glass, I mean that windows are made of wood, so, if you don't want to let them open and risk to be invaded by mosquitos and animals, you find yourself in a super dark room without any natural light. It semmed to us to be in a ghost ship...
Living room was anyway quite nice, the bedroom was very very dark, beds were terrible with plastic under not very clean sheets.
Bathroom was the worst space of the room. The sink was litlle and dirty, it was very dark, water was very few and it worked only 15 seconds, then it stopped for 20 seconds and then began again.
Bathroom was invaded by ants, as some of them were also in other areas of the room.

Resort doesn't serve alcohol at all and the restaurant is not organized at all for all people staying there. We weren't lucky because that evening it rained and the covered area of the restaurant only have few places, so that there was a very long Q to eat.

We returned to the room after dinner and we decided not to stay there one night more, so next morning we left to Redang island.

Staff was quite good and asked us if something was wrong, but they didn't gave us back money.

We saw some sea view chalet that seemed better that the suite, but also a lot of chalet very dark, humid and ugly.

Definitely we suggest to visit Perhentian staying at Bubu resort at Perhentian Kecil and move around with taxi boats (they cost 15 MYR for person for every trip and Besar is 5 minutes from Kecil by boat)

Here people say that hotel standard is different from european and american. I can undertand this, but I cannot accept they ask the same price of a 5 stars hotel for the standard of a campsite!

We stopped at the Coral View four years ago and had a really good stay. This time was unacceptable. We intended staying five days but left after one.

The hotel restaurant was still quite good and most of the staff were OK if a little jaded by it all. However the chalets at the back of the resort need knocking down or at least a major overhaul. The hotel was eighty percent full of Italian package tourists .......... not a problem in itself HOWEVER what it did mean was that anyone not on a package were herded into the chalets at the back. Ours was horrendously dark and smelled of sewers especially during the night. The bathroom was just not a place you wanted to be anywhere near. The toilet did not flush and had not flushed for some time. The bathroom itself was one of those eternally damp, grubby ones that should have been condemned years ago. An upturned bucket was placed on the floor with a pan of water on it presumably so you could try to clear the toilet. Thank you room service!

When we enquired about the likelihood of the flush being repaired the morose pimply youth at reception chortled and said he would 'tell maintenance'! Nothing happened. I doubt it ever will. If you can stick this level of bathroom on your hols the rest of the hotel was OK. Monkeys, bats and flying squirrels in the garden were all great and the snorkelling was quite good. It was sad to see all the coral dead on all the beaches though as it was all alive and thriving four years ago.

Sorry if you have booked in already before reading this review but if you can insist on a chalet in the front row, or failing that the second row, you may be allright .
