The Perhentian islands are an oasis away from it all...car free and as friendly as can be. Of the resorts, Tuna Bay is the pick of the bunch...not the cheapest by any means, but with the best beach, very helpful staff, and excellent breakfast. The rooms are basic but clean (our only complaint was the rock-hard pillows, they could invest in something softer), while the restaurant serves great food all day long - but again a short water taxi will find you much cheaper alternatives. The diving is wonderful, and even snorkelling we saw turtles and black-tipped reef sharks, while a walk in the jungle revealed monkeys, monitor lizards and, er snakes! We really enjoyed this place.

Room Tip: If you can afford it, get a sea view, otherwise we liked the rooms closer to the restaurant to make...

We stayed for 3 nights at the end of our Malaysia trip, we stayed in a deluxe hill view which was lovely and peaceful, away from the restaurant and the jetty. We saw monkeys in the trees outside our room on a couple of occasions. The jetty can get pretty busy but it never bothered us and you can always walk 5minutes down to the next beach which is more peaceful

We stayed on the snorkelling package and the food was good and plentiful, however there was no choice so if you are fussy this may not be for you. There is a large menu and before our package meals started we tried the barbecue which was great

I would recommend the snorkelling trips to rawa island and small island, where we saw loads of different fish and colourful coral reefs. although we absolutely hated the final point on both trips (turtle point) where at least 30 boats some with very loud music were trying to see turtles and when someone spotted one masses of people jumped in and chased it, unsurprisingly it didn't hang around! We were lucky to see turtles at two different times on the trip in a much more peaceful environment.

Generally the service was great, particularly on reception and the sea sports counter but some of the waiters were a bit stroppy.

Room Tip: Deluxe hill view roo,. Large and away from the restaurant/jetty

We had good expectations when coming here. After having read the reviews we went for the deluxe chalets with sea view, which were ok except for a bas smell of mould which we managed to improve by venting the room.
The main disappointment was from the quality of the house reef, very scarce visibility, little is left, few fishes. We went on two snorkeling trips which I recommend.
The beach is not private although (uncomfortable) sunbeds from the resorts are there; locals visit regularly the beach and sea and you have to share these resources with them. Avoid to travel during their school holiday. All in all pretty much run down and not worth the price and the hassle of the trip to get there.
The restaurant is good with a good variety of dishes.
Staff is polite but didn't seems to care much.
We recommend the transfer with them, all went very smooth.
If your flight is one time you can use their boat which is large and more stable than other boats.

You will be asked to pay at check in. With credit card there is a 3% surcharge. You may also pay in EUR,USD and AUD but the exchange rate is very inconvenient. Either bring a lot of cash or pay by CC.

Perhentian Island (Besar) is a wonderful location for nature lovers: no knicknack, no jet ski and no banana boats. O.k. especially at Tuna bay there can be quite some boat traffic at times because of the jetty , but although I am rather sensitive about noise it did not really disturb us. There are large separated areas for swimmers and snorkelers in front of the hotel as well as in many beaches so that you can snorkel and dive without fear of being overrun by a boat. The rooms (sea front bungalows) are nice, not too luxurious for the price, but clean and well serviced. For bigger rooms one should probably book the deluxe sea view bungalows, which are also facing the sea, they are just a bit higher up. Breakfast as well as food is superb, there is a great variety (barbecued dishes change every day and they are really delicious) and, by the way, food prices as well as drink prices are moderate. There is 24 hours electricity and air con, WiFi is available at the restaurant. Rates are not really cheap, but that’s what you have to pay for a hotel in this category in Malaysia. Who wants it cheaper should try Thailand. Snorkelling tours and of course diving tours and courses are offered bay the hotel as well as the diving schools around. There is also a wonderful trekking path around the island, where you can see more beaches as well as other resorts.

Room Tip: Of course the beach front or sea view room unless you don't care for sea view

Tuna bay is blessed with a great location right in front of a reef which is literally 5 feet from shore and not in bad shape notwithstanding the number of tourists that likely touch and trample it on a daily basis. Evidence at depth that they're trying to re grow the reef too, which is heartening.

Lots of fish to gawk at hovering just off shore on the reef.

Restaurant was great, serving wonderful Malay and western food. Being able to buy a beer was also a treat, as a significant number of the resorts aren't inclined to alcohol.

As for the rooms, they were certainly functional and did the trick. They were spartan, which isn't itself problematic at all. However, they're pretty dated now and show their age. Sliding doors that barely lock (and can be opened even if locked with a good hard pull); bathroom fittings that were literally just loose in the socket; compression shower curtain rod that lost its spring about 20 years ago, among others. All liveable, just give the impression that upkeep hasn't been a high priority. By comparison, having walked by Coral View, their individual chalets looked very clean and we'll maintained. Can't speak for their interiors, but certainly looked we'll cared for.

Big shout out to the amazing staff!!!! Especially the ones at reception, restaurant and people who handle the booking enquiries. Without you guys our trip wouldn't be as smooth and as amazing! Beautiful beach at tunabay, very chill and relaxed. Great link to diving company just next door - Universal Divers. Awesome diving instructors and all very helpful and accommodating. Whatever you ask - they will try to accommodate.

It seemed like a hassle to get to perhentian island, with domestic flight transfer & inland coach transfer & jetty transfer, but it definitely worth it. Make sure you stay at least 4 - 5 days to make the most of it if you love scuba diving like us! Definitely want to go back one day!

Room Tip: We went with the package on standard chalet - you are bound to hear your next door neighbor but it w...

I have just come back from a two week holiday in Malaysia, where we travelled the country and spent 3 nights at Tuna Bay Resort.

The boat transfer from Kuala Besut was easy, the hotel has an office (with WIFI) and they will arrange for your bags to be put on the boat and also to walk you to the ferry port. All very easy and staff were extremely pleasant. We had tried to get a beach front chalet to start with but this was not avaliable. The check in was easy and all the booking information was on a table ready for our arrival. The room was fairly basic and quite small, little bathroom and it had an adjoining door to the next chalet. There was no fridge. There was a balcony but the view was pretty poor and therefore we enquiried as to whether they had any deluxe villas on the beachfront. Luckily for us they did and we stayed at 1A. Although it is more expensive, it was definately worth it as the accomodation was bigger, generally nicer, fridge and lovely views of the beach and sea. I would definaltey recomend the upgrade and I feel that it was worth the money.

The hotel restaurant has good bbq food and breakfast was a buffet style each morning. There is also a little beach side cafe (independent from Tuna Bay) which serves excellent and cheap food during the day. There are other accomodation and food options along the beach, but from what I saw didn't look as good as Tuna Bay.

Beach was lovely, white sand and lovely blue seas. We organised a snorkeling trip with the resort for a couple of hours, again well organised and we swam with sea tutles which was amazing.

Staff were all pleasant, chatty and helpful.
