“Great Beach and Snorkeling”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 October 2009

My wife and I stayed 4 nights with my son's family, 2 boys 2 and 4 yers of age. The beach is beautiful, water is clean and the snorkeling was great. Rooms at the resort were clean, very close to the beach and comfortable. We ate all our meals at the resort where prices were reasonable and the food good. There are other dining options.

Monkey, lizards and a harmless vine snake

You have to travel a bit to get there but it was worth it.

We've just come back from our second stay in Tuna Bay Resort and we enjoyed it very much, so I can't understand the negative rating from September 09. We spend two weeks there in one of the cozy and quiet rooms with garden view (cheaper than those with seaview, but this adds only a fex steps more to the beach). We even had the very same room than 5 years ago! The rooms are spacious, simply furnished but decent and clean. Unfortunately, in the bathroomnothing had been done in these years, it could do with some renovations, but as long as everything is clean and and working, we didn't mind. From the cosy little veranda we often observed squirrels, monkeys and even snakes. The surroundings and the beach are clean (the only clean beach we saw all over the big island) and well carde for. We enjoyed particularly the emerald sea and the house reef with all it's wonders. There is no nightlife/amusement, so we could just enjoy the peace at the sea! We enjoyed the good cooking.
The staff is very friendly, helpful and always ready for a friendly smile. The service was (apart from the restaurant) good. The knowledge of English is reasonable. The only thing we have to critisize is the slow service in the restaurant, particularly at dinner time. The way, the waiters work is very slow and not efficient. When we got fed up with spending the evening waiting, we walked often to the restaurant next door, were hardly any guests were and the food was as good.
In the adjacent dive center (Universal divers) we spent a wonderful time, did lots of diving. We experienced there a great awareness of the fragility of the marine life, which was lived and passed on to the divers.
We never used a taxi boat, since they are too expensive indeed. At times, there were many boats about, racing back and force, particularly the playing of the young boys with their boats, was rather enoying and disturbed the peace.

This is our third time back to Tuna Bay and we were quite disspointed as we used to really love the resort. The beach is still spectacular and the view is stunning. However, the resort is looking rather tired and we feel that it is time for an upgrade. We found the beds/pillows quite uncomfortable. The food was below average and we were surprised that there was hardly any fresh seafood. The service was average and the staff didn't even bother to say goodbye. Perhaps it's time to find a friendlier resort in Perhentian or elsewhere.

Staff is any business' strongest asset and this is very true of Tuna Bay. They could not do enough for us.

Food was good and varied and after trying other good places along the beach, we always came back. Fresh fish daily was a big factor in this.

There are recliners on the tree shaded beach, beach towels are available, diving is next door.

Leave your shoes at home, this is definitely a barefoot resort.

This is not your typical asian resort full of luxury, but a small and cozy beach resort for people who want to enjoy the sea... we got a sea front bungalow which was 10 feet from the sea... staff is decent, food is good and pretty cheap (for western standards at least). unfortunately they have more room than sun beds, so in the morning you'd better get up early!

We just got back from our holidays in Perhentian Islands. Although the beaches are beautiful I would not recommend people to go here. The local tourism industry is run by the local maffia. And tourist are seen as people to make money off. Not people you want to give great service and an unforgettable holiday. Few local people have learned to smile and if it is Ramadan you can not even have dinner before the local staff has had dinner.
Most irritating is their total lack of an eco-conscience and local guides can be seen standing on coral or giving chase to turtles that hardly get the chance to surface and breathe before the next speedboat full of tourists descends on them.
Most annoying are the touts on all the beaches and the water taxi maffia where you end up paying 10 times the cost of last year. one boat to the other side of the island which takes 5 min can cost 20 USD.
Most locals chase around the water in overpowered speedboats (petrol is cheap in this country) and have little regard for you or your holidays.
my advice is stay away and go to Bali. Much better food and service with a smile!

After reading all the reviews I was hoping that we had made the right choice picking Tuna Bay for our 5 night stay and did we ever! Although they put us in a room by the kitchen (which we asked to move and were moved the next day) we were overall very pleased. The staff were always smiling, the rooms simple but clean, the food delicious. We had a great time. My only thing bad to say is dont stay in huts 18-23 as they are by the kitchen/restaurant and you get woken up in the morning by the morning buffet. If only the weather had been a bit better, overally I would definitely recommend Tuna Bay.

One other tip - if you are in your 30s like us and dont want back packer areas, DO NOT go to the other island - Kecil. It's built around that and is dirty.

Oh yes, the snorkeling at Tuna Bay is incredible due to the live coral.
