“Good place to stay for Perhentian”
Reviewed 9 July 2014

We have visited Perhentian Kecil for diving only and stayed in Matahari at an AC room for 7D6N. I had fun dives and my girlfriend got her Open Water Certificate there.

The bungalows were in good shape for Perhentian standards and relatively clean. Staff was friendly and helpful. The electricity was not available during the day but it was not a problem since practically nobody goes to Perhentian Kecil to sit in their room.

The food around is expensive for Malaysian standards buy certainly not affordable.

The diving gear was old and one of the diving instructors was not careful and patient with the beginners which lead to a not so great experience with the diving. However, this was not related to the accommodation so it is the subject of another review.

Room Tip: Get and AC Room in the hot season. It is totally worth it.

Took my open water course with matahari chalet.

Staffs in kuala besut office are friendly and willing to guide us to their office. They are even willing come to our location to bring us at one point.

Room is decent and clean. Location is very good as it located in the middle of long beach and less than 2 minutes walk from chalet to long beach, restaurant, mart, and beach bar.

Matahari dive centre is just fantastic. Full of awesome peoples and they are all passionate in teaching and sharing their experience. Will definitely recommend matahari dive centre to those who want to enjoy some fun dive or taking courses ( open water to dive master).

We stayed 3 night - paid 90myr per night room only for a fan room - bungalow style - with western bathroom (cold shower). Very basic wooden bungalow with balcony and 2 chairs/table. Double bed with Mosquito net. Quiet location just 100m from the beach and restaurants. Wifi available at reception - but we could connect in our room (B2). High price for basic room - that is Kecil in high season! Take care at Kecil my shoes were taken from the balcony (very common). Uninspiring.

We stayed with Matahari for 9 days in total.

We stayed in the air con room for the first 3 days and then moved to one of the chalets with just a fan. We stayed in room L8 first which had a really nice view of the beach from the balcony. The air con room actually had a huge ceiling fan which worked really well and we didn't use our air con that much. The bed was comfortable and the bathroom was clean and with a hot shower. The chalet was a lot more basic and in my opinion I think it could do with a new mattress, bed sheets and mosquito net as they all had holes in and looked very worn. However we really enjoyed sitting out on our balcony in the chalet.

We completed our open water diving course here and we really enjoyed it. There was just the 2 of us with our instructor Dee who was brilliant and very
attentive.

The accommodation is just steps away from the stunning beach.

The wifi did not work very well at the dive shop or anywhere on the island for that matter, which was difficult as we needed to book flights etc so I would recommend doing this before you arrive.

I really really enjoyed my stay here and would recommend it to anybody!! I stayed about a week, first in the air con room (for 120 RM), which had a nice balcony with a view over the ocean. the room was clean and neat, towels, soap and toilet paper included. I also tried the much cheaper bungalow in the longhouse with fan and mosquito net(60RM), which was also nice, but of course kind of hot. I recommend the a/c one. Mostly I enjoyed the people, though. Not only were there so many nice travellers hanging out at the reception hut aka the WIFI spot, but also the owners and employees were super friendly and helpful. Shoutout to Shakir and his crew for taking us to the mountain with the awesome view, the snorkeling trip and overall a great time!

Firstly without being able to pre book accommodation in the Perhentian Island it is a royal pain in the bum having to trek around in the blazing sun trying to find somewhere. However... The day before we arrived, I sent a message on Facebook to Matahari chalet and they held a room for us. We paid extra for a A/C room with a bathroom and glad we did. I cannot recommend an A/C room more. The island are HOT and HUMID and we wouldn't have been able to stay so long without it. Our room was great, clean, spacious with a huge bathroom, a balcony overlooking the beach (through some trees,) air con and a fan. Couldn't have asked for more. We did however pay 150MYR per night in comparison to 70MYR for a bungalow with a fan. Matahari is a great location aswell, literally steps from the beach when others were set a lot further back, or up wonky , unbuilt paths etc. Matahari is having building work done for a new building but this didn't bother us at all. We were at the beach all day anyway and the noise never woke us in the morning either. In most places the electric is turned off during the day and stayed on in the evening. The times at Matahari you had electricity was from 6.30pm until 9.30am. This was fine for us. Daniella's cafe is good for food and wifi. The wifi at Matahari wasn't working when we stayed. I recommend a short trip to swim with the turtles and you can ask one of the local guys on the beach to take you there for a small price. Unless you stay at BuBu.. Perhentian Kecil is all REALLY basic but... It is absolutely stunning. The beach and water is the best I've ever seen. We stayed 4 nights and I think that was about enough, there isn't much to do otherwise.
