This resort is probably a good choice if you don't mind being cut off from the rest of Redang island and if you have a pretty loose budget. Perhaps it was because we came here during the fasting month, or perhaps it's simply because the resort - isolated on top of a hill - doesn't quite give you the option to leave unless you're willing to drop a lot of money for a boat shuttle to take you to Long beach for a few hours.
While other reviews say that this is the worst hotel, etc etc, it's really, really not that bad. I guess you get what you pay for (even though you have to pay for A LOT more when you actually get there). The isolation part is OK if you don't plan to do much on the island. The hotel offers snorkelling (note: AMAZING snorkelling services) and other recreational activities, which is very convenient; and a shuttle takes you to the very desolate local village and The Taaras (where it's a 15-minute walk to an isolated white sand beach) where there are a couple of restaurants. The shuttle picks you from the hotel at 5.30pm and fetches you back at 7pm, so that's not much time to do anything there.
And it seems a lot of previous reviewers didn't bother to ask the staff where the beach was, because the hotel DOES have a beach. It's quite a steep walk down and It's a small stretch, but it's not all bad. If anything, it's quite pleasant, clean and peaceful.
The sad part about this place is that there is only one restaurant, and it is ridiculously overpriced. The food is quite good, though, just not worth the price you pay. I did not like the fact that I didn't have at least one other dining option, given the fact that the hotel isolates you to that degree.
The rooms are very comfortable. A little dated (a pipe or something burst in the roof of our room one morning, but that problem was efficiently rectified via us being shifted to a new room). But other than that, clean sheets, clean towels, air con, fan and free coffee and tea in the room and at the restaurant throughout the day. The seaview rooms are perhaps the most worth it. The room was lacking several things, like a floor mat for the bathroom, but that was quickly rectified -- you just have to ask them for what you need.
The service on a whole is commendable. Staff are generally very helpful and friendly. A couple of singers even come and serenade you during dinner at the restaurant.
As for the general landscape of the resort, I'd just say that it could be better maintained. The beach is lovely, no doubt about that. But the grassy areas are strewn with weeds, and shrubs are quite scarce... it feels almost desert-like, not so resort-like..you have to walk a lot to get to and from your room if you're heading to the lobby, pool, or restaurant.. but it didn't really bother us.
