Redang Island Resort
Ranked #10 of 12 Hotels in Pulau Redang
Reviewed 30 July 2014

This resort is probably a good choice if you don't mind being cut off from the rest of Redang island and if you have a pretty loose budget. Perhaps it was because we came here during the fasting month, or perhaps it's simply because the resort - isolated on top of a hill - doesn't quite give you the option to leave unless you're willing to drop a lot of money for a boat shuttle to take you to Long beach for a few hours.

While other reviews say that this is the worst hotel, etc etc, it's really, really not that bad. I guess you get what you pay for (even though you have to pay for A LOT more when you actually get there). The isolation part is OK if you don't plan to do much on the island. The hotel offers snorkelling (note: AMAZING snorkelling services) and other recreational activities, which is very convenient; and a shuttle takes you to the very desolate local village and The Taaras (where it's a 15-minute walk to an isolated white sand beach) where there are a couple of restaurants. The shuttle picks you from the hotel at 5.30pm and fetches you back at 7pm, so that's not much time to do anything there.

And it seems a lot of previous reviewers didn't bother to ask the staff where the beach was, because the hotel DOES have a beach. It's quite a steep walk down and It's a small stretch, but it's not all bad. If anything, it's quite pleasant, clean and peaceful.

The sad part about this place is that there is only one restaurant, and it is ridiculously overpriced. The food is quite good, though, just not worth the price you pay. I did not like the fact that I didn't have at least one other dining option, given the fact that the hotel isolates you to that degree.

The rooms are very comfortable. A little dated (a pipe or something burst in the roof of our room one morning, but that problem was efficiently rectified via us being shifted to a new room). But other than that, clean sheets, clean towels, air con, fan and free coffee and tea in the room and at the restaurant throughout the day. The seaview rooms are perhaps the most worth it. The room was lacking several things, like a floor mat for the bathroom, but that was quickly rectified -- you just have to ask them for what you need.

The service on a whole is commendable. Staff are generally very helpful and friendly. A couple of singers even come and serenade you during dinner at the restaurant.

As for the general landscape of the resort, I'd just say that it could be better maintained. The beach is lovely, no doubt about that. But the grassy areas are strewn with weeds, and shrubs are quite scarce... it feels almost desert-like, not so resort-like..you have to walk a lot to get to and from your room if you're heading to the lobby, pool, or restaurant.. but it didn't really bother us.

Room Tip: Seaview rooms that are nearer to the lobby would be the best.. I don't know about you, but the r...

The hotel itself is nice enough, but it needs to be maintained. I booked a Seaview Chalet and stayed for 3 nights. When I got to the chalet, the shower was missing its shower head and hot water poured out of the pipe on top and nearly scalded me!. The bathroom sink was leaking hot water causing the tap heads to be constantly hot. The maintenance man was sent over and he got us a new shower head but the leaking tap could not be rectified. Further, the toilet splayed back flushed 'items' even after it had been flushed down!.

The food at Santapan Cafe was okay, but overpriced. Headed down to Aima's on their evening free shuttle to the 'kampong' (village) for dinner most days where food was a fraction of the hotel's prices and tasty to the bone. The 2nd day we were there, my friend and I requested for a shuttle back to our chalet (as our chalet was uphill and they are supposed to constantly provide free shuttle services to and from the lobby) but was denied a shuttle as it was the time the Muslims broke their fast...it would not have been so hard for me to accept except for the fact that it was raining and I was pregnant!!!. The staff did not even have the courtesy to offer me an umbrella for the walk back to the chalet. That, to me takes bad customer service to a whole next level.

The breakfast buffet was a small spread with not much variety, but what was worst was that the cereal had gone soft and mouldy...shocking that it was never checked before being served. They also had an egg station, but the first morning I was there, the station was all set up but the chef was not around!.

The hotel itself is okay, but I suppose having a manager to keep tabs and check the conditions of the chalet, food quality and customer service would be able to give this hotel the turnaround it so desperately needs. Its location is already not the most convenient, with one having to take a boat just to get to Long Beach, so it desperately needs to up its customer service and facilities they offer to ensure that guests have a good time there. Oh, not to mention that the gym has not airconditioning and you end up only being able to exercise for 10mins tops considering the mosquitoes and the heat...

Room Tip: Choose the Seaview Chalet as the Rainforest Chalet has monkey issues

Chalets is dates. Doors are eaten up by mites. Connecting room door can't be shut. No tv remote control. No air conditioning remote control. Toilet was filled with dirt all over. Plugs in the room was not working. Requested for fresh towels as we were only provided with 2 when we had 3 guest to the room. Called them 10 times and the towel was not sent over. To get an extra mattress to be put up into the room it took them 2 hours after we checked in. Hot shower was not working. just horrible. Nothing great and don't waste your time at this resort.

if your image of redang is that of clear blue seas and powdery sands u will find it shattered upon arrival at this resort, there is no proper beach and it takes 20mjns and rm45 just to get a boat ride to Long beach to enjoy the famed redang beach scene. Food was limited as there was only one restaurant and the shower area certainly wasn't one that would make me feel like spending more time in it. I for one do not exactly fathom the purpose of its existence as it's not relaxing enough on its own (facilities are too old for you to enjoy) and it doesn't provide u a beach to getaway to. One of the worst value for money I've ever paid for a hotel. Had to upgrade to taaras resort on my second night just so I wouldn't feel like my redang trip was a disaster.

Old towels provided..made us think that they could be left by previous tenants as the towels are of different colors (green and orange) and they were a bit crumpled at the corner of the bed when we arrived, not in the toilet as normal hotels would do).

Tv plug did not work and we had to wait for almost an hour with two calls made to the maintenance service.

Not to mention we already waited an hour to get the keys after check-in.

No slippers provided, which is fine....until we found out that they have no quilts for the beds! Only the old sheet of overlay (you can tell, because the threads are coming out).

Was promised a king size bed but we got instead.. joined single beds.

Might as well add..they do not have floor mat for the bathroom.

Me & my wife recently stayed in this beautiful resort. Amazed with its beautiful scenery of nature and sea. This is a great location for relaxing vacation as it is quiet and pampering. Our room on perfect sea view which gives us a naturally breathtaking view. All staff were friendly and very helpful. The best thing at this resort is you get to explore the marine life and nature (2 in 1) .

We also rented the scooter and ride around the resort, island, teluk dalam beach & local village. its fun and good to see the local people and try out seafood meal at the local restaurant.

We will come back soon!

Room Tip: book for seaview room :)

The chalets were a bit dated, but clean and comfortable. Good working airco and shower OK.
Beautiful view from the chalets overlooking the sea.
The restaurant served nice food and the service was impeccable.
The service is really something which put this resort very positively apart from others, and this compensates for the fact that the resort is not located at the beach as all others on the island. They do have a tiny beach at the resort, but also a shuttle service to a private beach.
Very positive experience! !
