Chefchaouen & Dar Gabriel was our first stop in a 3 week self-drive tour of Morocco. We arrived extremely late due to huge issues picking up our hire car in Tangier-Med Port (beware hiring a car in Morocco). Ben still managed a huge welcome with a big smile, despite the late hour. He was even still able to find us a place to have dinner. The Riad was wonderful but don't expect 5 star hotel. The firmness of the beds was something we have come to expect after our 3 weeks in Spain. This Riad is truly Moroccan in a superbly rustic way, perfect for us. The loss of water services during the night just added to the charm. Nothing was too much trouble for Ben, and his amazing hospitality made us wish we were able to stay longer. If staying at the Riad, follow the directions given upon booking to the T, and you will have no problems finding your way. Be prepared though, for the hectic nature of the Medina alleyways & the chaotic parking situation. You also have to be prepared to pay the parking 'Guardian', and trust him with your car keys (a little confronting on our first night in Morocco). This small blue village will charm you regardless of these quirks and leave you wanting to stay longer - one night was definitely not enough, especially considering our late arrival. We left confident that if we had longer, Ben would have gone out of his way to ensure we experienced everything Chefchaouen has to offer, with his 'our home is your home' mantra.

Room Tip: As a group of four, the two upstairs terrace rooms were perfect. It felt like the terrace and its l...

Very nice riad and friendly staff. We were travelling with friends, so we saw a few rooms (they all seemed to be cosy). Unfortunatly we didn´t try the restaurant which was recommended (maybe next time). The atmosphere of the place was very relaxed. The breakfast was also very nice (the pancakes was the nicest we tried on our 6 day trip) The would be only one thing that I would change, we travelled at the begining of June (the temperature was just nice) I would recommend the staff to lay the table for breakfast on the beautiful roof terrace they have, it would be a nice way to start your day.

My 90 year old mother and my sister and I stayed in the triple room and found it to be a perfect fit! Our host Ben and his wife were lovely. Ben met us just outside the medina and helped us with our luggage. Dar Gabriel is such a treat. The roof terrace where we ate our pre- arranged dinner and breakfast was delightful. Our only regret was that we had time for only night. I plan to come back again with my husband in the near future and will definitely spend more time at Dar Gabriel and Chefchaouen.

My wife and I stayed at Dar Gabriel in Chefchaouen three nights during a three-week tour of Morocco with four other friends. We all stayed at this small, traditional riad just inside the walls in the Andalusian quarter of the medina. Owner Ben Salam is certainly one of the most welcoming and caring hotel hosts I have encountered in forty years of traveling. He and his staff are absolutely committed to your enjoyment. The medina of Chefchaouen is a challenge for even the most experienced traveler. It is a big benefit to have someone like Ben who will do anything in his power to insure that you have a great time in this interesting city. Having said that, the riad has its limitations. This is not a western-style hotel. It is picturesque and evocative of the surrounding city, but the rooms are small. The bathrooms smaller and not particularly well equipped. Ventilation is not great and sometimes the rooms seem damp. But, the location is wonderful. The views from the roof terrace are great. The staff is extraordinarily helpful. The price is very reasonable. We had dinner at the riad twice and they were among the better meals we had in Morocco. Ben is a great source of all sorts of information about the city and its environs. If you want a genuine medina riad experience and you are willing to deal with the hurly burly world of a Moroccan medina, this is one of the best places to have it.

Room Tip: The upper floor rooms are much smaller. If space is an issue, you will want to be on the lowest flo...

I recently stayed at Dar Gabriel with family and friends. Upon our arrival, which was our second, I became quite ill necessitating a hospital visit. The manager, Ben, was a guardian angel taking care of everything and putting us all at ease during an incredibly stressful time. I was sorry not to spend more time at the Dar itself; however, both dinners and the one night I slept there were as wonderful as our first visit. The staff is incredibly caring and kind, the rooms very comfortable and clean, and the meals plentiful and delicious. This Dar is an oasis in one of the most charming towns in Morocco.

The location is just perfect, right in the Medina, surrounded by blue painted alleys and houses. Our room was pleasant and our host Ben was friendly and helpful. He gave us some good advice to visit some typical souks in nearby tiny villages.
