“An Oasis in the Desert”

Great place to stop, not too big, friendly and helpful staff. Really clean an comfortable rooms. Great little swimming pool, good simple food and great value and you can have Bed & Breakfast or half board option. Great stop for motorcyclists with shaded parking. The dunes are just outside the wall, spectacular!

My husband and I stayed for three nights at the beginning of December 2013. What a fabulous place to stay. The staff couldn't have been nicer, very helpful and friendly. We chose to stay in a suite, and what a great choice that was. We opted for bed, breakfast and evening meal. The food was very good and plenty of it. The rear of the hotel opens out onto the dunes, and we took full advantage of walking out every evening to watch the dunes change colour as the sun was setting (one evening we went by camel!!!, which was organised by our hotel). It's a must stay for anyone wanting a bit of luxury when visiting the dunes (but not at luxury prices). We can't wait to go back. Oh......and the roof terrace is a great place to sit with a cuppa in the mornings after breakfast. Enjoy peeps!!!

Room Tip: We opted for a suite, with a double bedroom, a twin bedroom, bathroom and lounge area. The evenings...

We stayed here after a recommendation from other travellers we met in Fes. Easy to find, just follow the signs, turning right when you arrive in Merzouga. They have a couple of room options; double room & breakfast 380Dh or with dinner 500Dh. We chose dinner. Our room was large, two double beds, nice bright, clean bathroom and an a/c that worked well. The mattress wasn't too comfy, but ok for the 2 nights we stayed. The shower pressure was also low but everything else more than made up for that! Friendly, helpful staff, delicious food (kefta, tangine with prunes, Moroccan soup, chocolate mousse and the usual continental breakfast) and a nice outdoor seating area by the pool. They also arranged a sunset camel trek (we opted not to take the night in the desert option) for 150 Dh pp. The sunset was lovely. So peaceful out in the desert. And so was the hotel. A relaxing place to spend a few days.

Arrived in Merzouga by motorbikes and looked at several hotels which most certainly did not live up to the promises suggested by Internet searches. In desperation followed a tout to this hotel to find a spotlessly clean, friendly and inviting hotel with lovely rooms, pool and seating areas. Ideal parking places for our bikes and magnificent views of the Erg Chebi dunes which were within walking distance. Best of all was the way we were treated....nothing was too much trouble and the food was truly wonderful. We took the evening meal on the roof top terrace watching the dunes disappear into the sunset. You will not be disappointed.

We stayed here in August 2013 for one night while on tour with The Adventure Company. The hotels location makes everything else seem less important. The Views are spectacular, the hotel sits right on the edge of the sand dunes and the views especially at sunrise and sunset are well worth the long journey we took to get there. The rooms are very clean the beds very comfy and good size, air conditioning not that great but fine for a one night stay. Clean towels, good sized bathroom and hot water. The food and service was great. We done the camel trek from the hotel which was amazing, words cant describe how amazing it was. The 4x4 jeep safari was also fab. I would recommend both these trips.

Room Tip: Make sure you get up for the sunrise, we watched from the roof which was spectacular.

Les Portes de Desert is conveniently located next to the tarmac road, just outside Merzouga, so you can get there easily by hire car and even by touring car, and at the back you can walk straight into the dunes. The rooms are clean and spacious, showers working (and hot too), plenty of good towels. There is a nice swimming pool, breakfast is great.
Possibilities of camel rides, either you can go to the Obera oasis and stay the night in a nomad tent (depending on the season the bivouac can be noisy and overcrowded), meals , matrasses and blankets are provided, or you can opt for a short tour just to see the sun set. The boys leading the camels are more interested in selling fossils at extortionate prices than in the welfare of their clients - they refused to let us mount the camels for the return trip if we didn't buy first!
But even so: the dunes are beautiful.
