“Great spot on Ometepe”
Reviewed 16 January 2014

We stayed at La Omaja for three nights over the New Year. We and one other couple shared one of the cabins, and everything was perfect for us.

Everything about our stay was great, from the pick up at the Ferry, to helping us kayak, hike, and do other activities, to watching the sunset over the lake from a hammock.

The only thing that impressed us more than that view was the staff. Owner Jamie takes care of you and is sincerely proud of his adopted home. He was willing to chat about the island, Nicaragua, his family, and his place, and he made sure we had a great time. He even went as far as to taking us out to a nearby town’s festival so we could get a taste of Ometepe life.

Jamie has hired some great islanders to welcome and take care of his guests, especially Oscar and Jeffery. They greeted us with a huge smile and taught me a few choice words in Nicaraguan.

The room is more than you'd expect. Its clean, air-conditioned, and the water is hot. There are some ants and some geckos, but realize you are not at a five star resort. I’m guessing, though, if you’re looking at taking the hour-long ferry ride followed by an hour-long drive on a tough, dirt road, you’re not reading this.

Really, the only downside is that pool. It’s so near perfect that you find yourself sitting in it drinking Tona after Tona. Watching New Year’s Eve fireworks over Nicaragua from the hot tub is tough to beat.

This is really a good spot if you want to relax and be close to nature (so yes, it's a bit remote, but that is the whole point!). The rooms/cabins are pretty spartan och nothing special. But you shouldn't go to La Omaja, or maybe not even Ometepe, if you need luxury rooms or are afraid of little bugs.
The actually setting of this place is however wonderful and idyllic! The little restaurant (that has pretty good food, and surprisingly even fake soy meat!) has a great view of the lake, and the best way to enjoy the sunset is from the pool.
Jamie, the owner, is a nice guy that can tell you a bit about the the country and the island, and he will also help you to arrange tours.

Feeling of being in the middle of jungle despite being only 200m from the water.
These private cabanas discreetly surroundind the pool make you feel at home.
The views from the restaurant/lounging area are as sublime as from the pool just meters below.
I'm not even talking about the sunsets from all those areas over lake Nicaragua. Friendly staff, genuine owner, child friendly place. Want more ? See for yourself !

Jamie and his family have the nicest location on Ompete. The infinity pool overlooks the lake with a volcano view that takes your breath away.

We stayed in a private casista with bathroom and A/C. We had our own porch and just a quick walk to the restaurant.

The food was fantastic. We loved the plantain chips with refried beans as a snack before dinner (and sometimes lunch!).

Jamie can arrange a wondeful kayak trip where you see caymenes (alligator family), turtles, egrets and many, many more birds. (it was a highlight of our trip).

The roads to Merida aren't very good but it's worth the taxi ride from the ferry port. We recommend La Omaja to everyone. We would come back to spend a week here again as the island is so beautiful.

Room Tip: Our casista was wonderful. I doubt if any of them aren't up to Jamie's excellent standards.

Fabulous hotel. Nice and cozy personal. Had the opportunity to choose the dinner music after a jacuzzi over the magnificent lake landscape. The rooms are very large and clean. Has a luxurious garden. In the midst of the forest by the lake. On only hears the birds and sometimes some veri original monkey shouts.

Wow! This place was fantastic! From beginning to end, the owner Jamie saw to it that we had everything we needed, from transportation to/from their beautiful hotel, recommendations for places to visit, while providing us with a wealth of info about this magnificent island. 5 adults, 2 children and a baby.....we couldn't of asked for a better place or proprietors. We brought microwave popcorn for kids, asking them if they could pop it for us....they don't have a microwave....and 2 great things I learned from that was 1) they don't use microwaves, food is fresh and cooked the way it should be 2) then to our surprise...a knock on our door and one of the staff had a bowl of popcorn, they cooked the "old fashioned" way, over a stove! How accommodating can THAT be? Def. will return to visit and do some of the adventures we couldn't do easily with the kids.....Thanks Jamie and Roxana, your family, staff and accommodations made this such a memorable, special adventure for all of us. Give love to Asa, Christopher and baby Lincoln. You have made paradise even better!

Room Tip: Every room has an outstanding view...cant go wrong with any room.

That view across the lake to volcan concepcion, wow. Getting here is half the adventure. For a reasonable cost the hotel will organise 4x4 transport from/to the port. Use it and do not attempt to get there in a car. The driver stopped en route at Ojo de Agua, then at the hotel so we could drop bags and have lunch, and then drove us up to the closest point to tge San Ramon waterfall. We hiked up and back to the vehicle in 2-3 hours.

Back to La Omaja. They have the most perfect small infinity pool, plus jacuzzi, to look out over concepcion, listen to the howler monkeys, and watch the sunset and fireflies dancing.

The cabins were neat and tidy and good value. No complaints there. Food was ok, but didnt nlow us away (though we didnt expect it too, somewhere as remote as this). Service from Oscar was brilliant throughout. He should be commended for his skills!
