“Lovely place right by the lake.”
Reviewed 2 January 2012

As we were 4 people travelling together we took a lake front cabin with 2 double beds and a single. A great room for a family or friends travelling together. We had a lovely little balcony with lake views and rocking chairs where we had some drinks and snacks at night listening to the waves hitting the shore. There are plenty of fireflies in the grass which was a highlight as I had never seen them before. The restaurant is good and not overpriced, which was lucky since you are really stuck in the middle of nowhere and a taxi costs 10usd either way to the closest town. We got stood up by our arranged tour company however this was quickly solved by Francisco in the reception who both works at the hotel and as a tourguide. He got permission from the owner to get the hotelvan and a driver and took us on the same tour as we had planned and for a very good price. In general the staff were very nice and even let us keep a pre bought bottle of white wine in the fridge.

We went kayaking from a nearby location and while at the water we saw the amazing bungalows. We were immediately captured by its charm, double cabins with a veranda at the water edge. The rooms have hot water, A/C and great new beds. The veranda is provided with rocking chairs / love seats and tables in some cases.

WIFI is not available at the rooms but we were not charge any internet services /WIFI wherever it was available around the restaurant and the reception area.

The personnel is attentive and the food taste was fair for the price. They even deliver the food to your cabin if you request it.

Room Tip: Pick the cabins to the end as they are the newest one

I divided my time between Charco Verde and Santo Domingo, and I was surprised to like the CV area better. The hotel was good - stayed in a hostel dorm (all alone) for $6 per night. Shower did not have hot water, but it was surprising lukewarm and totally fine. Did a volcano tour with them, which was great. They have a swimming area, awesome sunsets and a gorgeous view of Concepcion Volcano (the bigger one). Also visited the reserve nearby and went swimming in the lake behind the hotel.

I only visited the two areas, but I don't see this area getting quite that much love. I definitely liked it, and this hotel was great. Let me just note that I did not eat there, and I heard the food was mediocre (but not expensive), and they don't have a guest kitchen. Still, would definitely stay there again.

This place is really special in terms of location & surroundings. Ometepe has to be one of the most stunning places anywhere, with its twin volcano peaks & rural setting.

We had a lake front air con room which I would definitely recommend. Our room was upstairs in a rustic 2 storey cabin just metres from the lake edge with the volcano looming behind it. We had a large balcony with rocking chairs to sit & chill & enjoy the views of the lake & volcano.

The entrance to charco verde nature reserve is a nice 10 minute walk along a lakeside path, & you can have a good walk or horse ride around the reserve.

My only regret staying here was that we loved the surroundings so much that we didn't go out to explore Ometepe as much as we should. My son (aged 6) was happy to spend the day just floating around in the lake. There are some hammocks to chill out in the grounds & it offers a very relaxing environment.

The restaurant had a fairly good menu seeing that it's quite remote. The owner was very friendly & helpful.

One word of caution, try to take the larger ferry rather than the lancha; the latter is very hot, crowded & uncomfortable & you miss out on the views that the open air decks on the ferry offer. Also beware if travelling to
Ometepe on a Sunday as there is no timetable available for Sundays & we ended up spending 3 hours on the dock at San Jorge (always a bright side though - my son had a great game of baseball on the beach with a group of local kids & we found the best ever spaghetti bolognese in the cafe there!)

Staff was only helpful if you flashed money or left a good tip. Otherwise, staff and managers were very inattentive and rude. It's a shame because the property is on a beautiful lot and location is ideal. The management & staff and service ethos is in desperate need of a makeover.

If you get to Ometepe and are thinking of staying in Moyogalpa for the first night, consider traveling just a few miles to Charco Verde and staying here, at Charco Verde Hotel, or at Chico Largo. The beach is nice, it's peaceful, and the room at Venecia are comfortable. It is expensive for Nicaragua but the area is quite nice and far better than staying in town.

We came through the hotel for a meal, which was mediocre. The prices are a bit steep for Nicaragua, but given the prime lakefront view (which was stunning), I guess they can charge whatever they want and still get away with it. Our experience went from pleasant to terrible when my mobile phone was left at the dining table. The restaurant was completely empty (except for the presence of restaurant staff) --and the time was around 2pm--so the chances of other diners stealing the phone were impossible. Upon recalling that our phone was left at the table, we returned to claim it. The whole staff and the waiter (who could not look me in the eye) stated that no phone was found.
