I just returned from a trip to Lagos and stayed at the African Garden Logde for about a week in May. By the time I was leaving, I felt like I was leaving my home. This place is a true oasis, private, secure, very serene and truly African. Great food, Great people. Great rates. The staff were friendly, helpful and courteous. The rooms were clean with nice african decor and beautiful gardens/surroundings. I hope to return soon and will definitely be staying at Mama's place.

To be honest, I was reluctant to share this little secret, for fear that if it becomes too popular I wouldn't get a room next time I'm in Lagos, but it deserves better from me after the great time I had there.
At the end of a sweltering day in the heat and insane traffic that is the Lagos "go-slow", where do you most want to be? Let me save you the guesswork: Mama's Place, The African Garden.
A great shower (that works), a quick change (in a spotless, air-conditioned room) and then an icy cold Gulda or two with some not-too-heavy-but-delicious peppered prawns in the Garden Bar (Not on the menu? No probs. Just talk to Mama. Nothing's ever too much trouble).
If a hotel is a place to stay, this isn't a hotel. It's a place to be! A place to entertain! An African home from home... with great service on tap!
The garden, the rooms, the common spaces look like they belong in a well ordered, beautiful home... because they ARE. They're in Mama's home. She's the charming, classy lady who owns it and LIVES there... and it SHOWS.
I wouldn't think of staying anywhere else and I'll be back soon.

My husband, 13mth old daughter and I stayed at the African Garden Lodge from 28th March to 14th April. We decided to choose this hotel because of the positive reviews that it had here on Trip Advisor and I am glad to say that we weren't disappointed. We stayed in the African King which cost us aprox. N9000 (GBP36) per night. The room was very clean and spacious and didn't feel overcrowded even when we put up our daughter's travel cot. The bathroom was huge and we had hot water on demand as well as really great water pressure for the shower. There are some wonderful African paintings on the wall and the bed linen and blinds also picked up on the African theme. We also had some beautiful plants in the room. We benefited from cable tv our bedroom , so we were able to keep up with happenings here in the UK. The fridge in the room meant that we always had access to cold drinks for our daughter. The air con was a dream - especially when you put the fan on as well! A very welcome relief after a day in hot, humid Lagos.

So , I guess you're wondering what really makes this place special? Well, I think that it's the owner and her staff. The owner is a wonderful lady called Mama. She lives on the premises and it really makes all the difference. She knows about everything that's going on and is always on hand to sort out even the smallest of problems. She has trained her staff to a high European standard and has even taught her chef how to make a mean Enlish roast dinner! Mama was most helpful to us during our stay and when our daughter was feeling ill during our first week, she personally drove us to see the pharmacist and even paid for my daughter's treatment! Furthermore, she called us when we got back to London to make sure that we arrived safely. Definitely above and beyond the call of duty and I can't tell you how much we really appreciated her effort.

The staff themselves are a joy. They are incredibly polite and always ready to help. Sam on reception is a fantastic chap. He was always smiling, always happy to chat and extremely efficient at his job. Our daughter loved him and was often far happier to see Sam every morning than she was to see us! But it's not just Sam who makes the place a great place to stay. It's the gate security, the bar staff, the cleaners, the general manager.....all of them! None of them have become complacent in their roles and all of them add to the relaxed atmosphere. But most importantly of all, these people are honest. We left cash, laptops etc. in room and nothing was ever touched. They are also very different to staff in other establishments in that they don't expect you to tip them. Which in our case, made us want to tip them all the more when we left!

And now onto the food.....YUMMY YUMMY IN MY TUMMY! The chef here really knows how to cook. During our stay we had traditional Nigerian food, Chinese food and English food. And when I said no pepper....they listened! They have a catfish pond in both the Garden Bar (internal bar for guests only) and Mama's Place (external bar). You choose the catfish you want and it is duly caught, killed and cooked to perfection. My husband's favourite meal was the Chairmans Catfish where the fish is grilled and then served with a really spicy gingery type sauce. The only downside to the food was that it was a bit expensive. A portion of chips will set you back N750 and a roast dinner N2000. But then again you do get what you pay for.

So fellow travellers, if you find yourself in Lagos in the near future do yourselves a favour and book a room at The African Garden Lodge. It's an amazing oasis of calm in an otherwise mad city! It's safe and secure (no one gets past security!) and a very convenient base from which to truly experience life in Lagos. We'll definitely stay here again....in fact I can't wait to go back!

My friend and I came to the the African Garden Lodge after a particularly unpleasant experience in another more expensive hotel in the locality. We were pleasantly suprised by the really nice ambience of the environment and how swithced-on and helpful the staff were.
What set the place apart in my esteem is the fact that it is not only family managed, but that the Owners are resident on site to keep an eye on things.
My colleague and I thouroughly enjoyed our stay and I would not hesitate to recommend the hotel to anyone else.

Just got back from a trip to Lagos and found this fantastic little hotel. It is called African Garden Lodge in Omofade Crescent Omole Phase 1. Not far from the airport in a gated estate with top security.

The grounds are amazing with palm trees and African sculptures. The staff are polite and helpful and the rooms in the main house start at N8,000 a night. I stayed in the Suite for N13,500 and it is fantastic really!!!! Beautifully decorated with African Art, LCD tvs, Internet and 2 (yes, 2) toilets. The theme was so skillfully carried through the hotel, from the polite staff to the choice of bed linen.

The food is delicious and when I said "no pepper", there was none. This is a real home from home and the owner can be seen tending the plants during the evening. There is a Catfish pond for those who like to see their food alive just before the meal - no thanks!!!

I stayed 9 nights with my 2 young children and it was safe for them to run around the outside during the day. A few nights we had dinner in the Garden. Bliss, could hardly believe we were still in Lagos.
