The weekend of the Goroka Festival is a busy one. The hotel was fully booked, and very busy. The rooms were very clean, good size and met my expectations based on what they offer on their website.
The food was very slow coming, and expensive, but bearing in mind that a lot of the western ingredients are imported it is perhaps not surprising. As a base for the festival it is great. However Goroka, like other centres leaves a lot to be desired. Security is a real issue, and there is little, perhaps no inferstructure. The rubbish is thrown on the streets, many roads are unpaved and the paved ones appear to have had no work since being sealed thirty odd years ago.
If you are thinking of hiring a car be warned - the roads are shocking - so full of potholes that drivers veer all across the road to avoid (if they can) the holes. Travel as a result is very slow.

Pacific Gardens is a welcome reprieve for anyone who has been traveling much in the PNG highlands. It is just a 3-star hotel, and certainly nothing special, but after the rugged travel through the highlands it is a sight for sore eyes. This is much nicer than Bird of Paradise, and I didn't see any other hotels that are Western-ready.

LOCATION - The hotel is about a 5 minute drive from the airport and also from the Goroka show grounds. It's secluded, and wooded, and except for some barking dogs at times, feels a long way from the hustle and bustle of Goroka town, without actually being so. There is a free airport shuttle which is very nice and works well.

AMBIENCE - There is a restaurant and bar, but the amenities pretty much end there. It's a 2-story hotel with outdoor entry.

ROOMS - Make sure to ask for premier rooms in the new wing. These are definitely the way to go. Even these aren't particularly "premier" so I wouldn't want one of the others. The rooms are generally clean and fairly well appointed, not too big but not claustrophobic by any means. The shower needed updated, it was clogged with calc and hurt to take a shower. The toiletries are pathetic, and they refuse to give you more than 1 day's worth of shampoo, no matter how many days you're staying, so make sure to bring your own.

FOOD - The restaurant is ok, the service is almost self-service most of the time, really really slow. The steaks were ok, and most days the pizza was ok too. The barramundi tasted old and fishy, I couldn't eat it. There was some lamb that was dry but ok. Breakfast was decent. Nothing to write home about, but after some of the other places the week before, this was good. Very limited menu choices, so we ended up eating pizza a lot.

BUSINESS - This is not a business hotel in the modern sense of the word. There is a tiny desk but you can't use it because the TV is set on top of it. The internet is by dongle (not wi-fi) and is super expensive, and we found it to be excruciatingly slow (though one person we talked to found it worked good for them).

Of course this is just an average 3-star hotel, but with some pleasant surroundings, it was a step above most of the other options in the entire highlands area, not just Goroka.

Room Tip: Opt for the Premier Rooms and make sure to ask for the New Wing.

Wonderful hotel, good food and beautiful setting. Staff were exceptionally helpful. Room was large with comfortable bed. Local artwork in the rooms and dining area. Location was within 5-10 minute drive to the Goroka show location

I have been here many times and this is the best place in Goroka. The other alternative is Bird of Paradise which is OK but not as nice.

Fod is fine particularly breakfast but dinner is perfectly OK. Try and get a room on upper level more spacious and quieter than other spots. Staff are fine and helpful

I spent ten days there recently, and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The room was a good size, with plenty of tea/coffee making supplies. The furniture was a bit dated and shabby, but that didn't detract from the general comfort.

The food in the open restaurant was well prepared, and the breakfast menu was particularly good. A very convivial bar with an eclectic mix of clientele. Very enjoyable.

Security is very good and is a 24 hour operation. All the staff, from the manager down, were extremely friendly and very helpful. Nothing was too much trouble.

I whole heartedly recommend the Pacific Gardens as an excellent base to stay when visiting the Goroka area.

Room Tip: Try and book the corner rooms. They have a balcony.

The choice in Goroka is not that great and the Bird of Paradise being probably the only other option. It is a very secure establishment and the grounds are good and safe if you feel like a walk. Somewhat Hilly. A nice open plan resaurant and the steaks are to die for. There is a subtantial range of choices but I feel the Rump Staeak hard to beat. Beside the resaurant is a well presented bar and open seating area. From time to time it fills up with PNG Characters but is always convivial and I have not seen any trouble in the time I stayed there. My room is very spacious, clean and well serviced. If I had a criticism it would be that the TV Channels are limited and no wifi.

Room Tip: Grab a suite if they are available.
