“Satisfactory, though probably would have gone to Birds of Paradise if I went again”
Reviewed 26 August 2013

Obviously in this part of the world, you set your expectations fairly low. By PNG standards, Pacific Gardens is a solid, if a bit unremarkable choice. Rooms are big, clean, and well equipped, if lacking any particular wow factor. Good water pressure in the showers, which is a rarity even at this end of the price scale in PNG. Staff generally friendly, but not hugely helpful when it came to organising tours and onward transport. Food in the restaurant was OK, but a bit pricey compared to the quality. Most of the guests are linked to the Pacific helicopter company - you're not likely to meet many other tourists out here, unless you come in festival week! The rather more shabby and dated Birds of Paradise hotel in the centre of town may well have been a better bet - nicer garden, terrace and a pool. It's worth travelling out to see some of the local villages, and the Asaro Mud Men. Most get visitors very infrequently, so your money goes a long way, and you'll get a pretty authentic experience. It's worth checking the local security situtation - very mixed reports from the embassies about which roads are safe to travel on.

Room Tip: Mid level rooms seemed about the best value for money

Spent just the 1 night here as part of an overnight visit to the highlands to see the Asaro Mudmen. My son had made the booking through Wotif for a twin room. At check in we had been given a double bed which was immediately rectified. The room was clean and spacious, bathroom- older but clean and toiletries were provided.
We ate our meals onsite ordering room service pizza on arrival ( late afternoon), a lovely evening meal and an adequate breakfast menu. I felt the meals were reasonably priced considering where we were. Location was secure and in a lovely rainforest setting with sounds of bird life.

Compared to many hotels in Papua New Guinea the Pacific Gardens Hotel was a pleasant place to stay. The room was clean. The service was friendly and efficient and the foiod at the restaurant was very good. In fact I have no complaints at all. The hotel is set in a very pleasant garden atmosphere and there are no worries with any security issues. Like other reviewers I would say it is the best place to stay in Goroka and I would certainly come again and recommend it to anyone visiting.

Room Tip: The newer part of the hotel is more aesthetically pleasing

Good place to stay, very helpful staff, and good food in the restaurant. I stayed in two different rooms--definitely get the newer rooms--they are much nicer and larger, although the older rooms are clean and fine as well. Both had lovely hot showers and a hotpot to heat water for coffee.
The housekeeping staff were nice enough to clean pounds of mud off my shoes too. The only problem was the credit card machine never seemed to be working so it was difficult to pay my bill.

I stay here every time I go to Goroka, usually several weeks a year. Never had a problem. They have a good backup power system for the frequent blackouts in Goroka.

It is a relaxed atmosphere. The cleaning staff are really courteous and the rooms are spotless. The relaxed atmosphere sometimes extends a bit too much to the wait staff in the hotel, where you might wait a long time for your drink. But to be fair they work long hours. Simple solution is just to go to the bar yourself if you want a drink...

The grounds are well kept and luxurious. The sound of running water from the nearby stream adds ambience and blocks the sound of town.

Food is as good as you can expect in Goroka, and prices reasonable.

After staying at the Melanesian Hotel in Lae, and the Highlander in Mt. Hagen, it was a lovely surprise to find a hotel did not feel like 3-star quality charging 5-star prices. We arrived at the Pacific Gardens hotel on a hot day for a 2-night stay. It felt like we walked into a lovely cool oasis surrounded by beautifully kept lush tropical gardens with a river running through it. We got a very friendly reception and although the first premier room we were assigned was fine, it was not one of the newly renovated ones. Having read trip advisor before hand, I asked about these, and our receptionist immediately showed me a couple of the newly renovated rooms on the 2nd floor (203 to 210 were premier rooms that were recently renovated). I choose room 209 (her recommendation also). The room had a very nice homely feel to it, had large sliding windows with screens overlooking the entry way and the lush tropical forest, was tastefully appointed and outfitted with a very comfortable bed and Sheridan sheets and towels, and complete with nicely concealed refrigerator and tea & coffee making supplies. One problem was no milk for tea, but that was quickly remedied by the friendly staff in the restaurant. Soap and shampoo were a day’s worth, but if you’re traveling around PNG I would recommend you bring your own anyway, so this was not a problem to us. From the 2nd floor the sound of the river all night long was actually quite soothing and relaxing. There was no a/c, but in the Eastern Highlands this is not necessary as the weather is pleasantly cool and comfortable in December. The dinner menu at the restaurant was a bit sparse – chicken and pork options were crossed off and our waitress explained that it was because of the time of the year, so our only option was steak. However the food quality and prices were on par if not better than better than their Coral Seas counterparts. Overall, our experience was very good, and I highly recommend this hotel.

Room Tip: Rooms on the upper floor (203 - 210) are newly renovated; even the exterior is noticeably newer with...

Pacific Gardens Hotel is your only choice when staying in Goroka specially when attending the Goroka festival. It is located within a secure compound with trees and a stream running through the property. The airport, Goroka festival grounds, open market, museum, Bintangor supermarket (in front of Bird of Paradise Hotel) are within a 5-10 minute drive. The hotel provide a free shuttle from and to the airport and does not mind shuttling guests again if there is a flight delay to hang out in the restaurant. The hotel is a two story wooden structure (no elevator) with a good size premier room. However, request to have a room in the 2nd floor just in case someone with heavy feet happen to stay in the room above. The room is clean and stocked with enough towels. The shower area has no soap or shampoo holder but had decent hot/cold water pressure. Service in the restaurant is friendly but slow specially for dinner. Our group ordered pizza one night and it took over an hour with numerous requests before it came. Breakfast was decent (western breakfast) although the coffee is a bit weak for my taste considering that coffee is exported from Goroka. Menu selection was the same for lunch and dinner and pizza, burger and fish and chips were the staple during our stay. The bar is fairly well stocked with cold beer but very limited with wines.

Room Tip: 2nd floor premier room in the new wing
