Pirwa Hostel Machu Picchu
Reviewed 31 July 2014

This was a pretty average hostel; functioned well as a two night launching point for the main event at Machu Picchu. It was clean, seemed secure, and it was close enough in town to not require a long walk to anything. A good choice as long as you don't overpay.

Room Tip: Rooms on the top floor do not have a very strong wi fi signal; most of the time we didn't get an...

We stayed at this hostel for two nights in July, 2014.

We had to walk uphill a while to this hostel but it was not far away from the train station. The first room we were introduced was far back of the building. It was a dark but quiet room. We could see half broken buildings and sheds from the windows. We didn’t mind that at all but the real problem was bad smell from the bathroom. We asked the staff to change a room and they did it for us. The new room was facing the front alley and we could see a store from the window. The alley's light was on all night. We were very tired and could fall sleep quickly so it didn't bother us. We, however, had a problem with the bathroom again. This time the bathroom didn’t smell but a whole faucet moved every time we tried to turn off a faucet. In fact we couldn’t turn it off and water kept running. The bathroom floor was always wet.

We had breakfast in a very dark and gloomy room. It was a very basic breakfast (bread, jam and some cereals) but with the price we paid it was all right.

We know that hotels are very expensive in Aguas Calientes and this hostel is one of the cheapest there. With the price we paid, I guess we should not complain so much. They should maintain the basics such as cleanness or functions of bathrooms though.

Price and location of this hostel is wonderful. This hostel is good for “super” budget travelers. We are budget travelers but we were not comfortable to stay this hostel. We don’t mind to pay a little extra and stay a different hotel/hostel if we have a chance to go to Aguas Calientes again.

Room Tip: Check a bathroom before you settle and if necessary ask to change a room

I searched high and low for a good, budget option in Aguas Calientes. I knew the town would be overpriced, and it seemed as though most of the reviews for any hotels/hostels in AC were not positive. After staying at Pirwa for one night, I would recommend it.

The room itself was very basic, but very clean. The bed was uncomfortable, but not horrible. The shower had plenty of hot water. AC is definitely a damp town, but I didn't notice any mold in the room. Breakfast started early and was simple. At night, there was a karaoke bar near by (or some band who didn't exactly sound that great) that I could hear. The music didn't last extremely late, but I was trying to get as much sleep as possible before heading to MP in the early AM.

Overall, for the price (in AC), Pirwa worked for me just fine.

We stayed here for one night and were pleased with location although it is up the hill so a bit of a mission with bags and altitude issues! The hostel was nice, welcoming but smelt of cooking- a family live in the building and were doing their own business so it wasnt a great smell. The room we stayed in looked over the central courtyard of the building and we had no privacy as such apart from when you closed curtains. We also had issues sleeping as there was a window above the door that had no curtains so the light from outside was still bright. The bathroom was very mouldy and so it was a bit disappointing.

I stayed at the hostel for 1 night before waking up at 4.00am to go to Machu Picchu. I stayed in a private room with bathroom.
As the title says, it serves its purpose. It is an OK option if you need to stay a night in aguas calientes and are on a budget. I would still suggest that you'd try another hostel as the beds were dusty which made it hard to breathe at night.
On the plus side, they know their clientele since you have breakfast served at 4.30am. It is nothing grandiose, but at least you can eat something before going on top of machu picchu.
The staff was nice and helpful!

If u r like most of the travelers that go to Aguas Calientes to spend the night coz u r going up the Machu/Wayna/ Huchuy Picchu on the next morning: its perfect for u! U get a good, quiet sleep, totally necessary for THE big day. Nothing else matters ;) staff is friendly. Brekkies are horrible.

I stayed only one night (during the low season) but I really enjoyed this short stay there. The bedrooms are basics but quite comfortable and very clean (so as the bathrooms). Staff member are nice and gives you a lot of information, really appreciated. It's a little bit far from the train station but the city is so small that you maybe have to walk 5 / 10 minutes max to reach it. Good to know : the breakfast starts from 4.30 am ! Really appreciated if you want to see the Machu Picchu at the sunrise !
