“Good Hostal Value in Machu Picchu”
Reviewed 3 August 2010

The Hostal is Basic; when we arrived at MACHU PICCHU from the train of OLLANTA a lady was there with a signs with our names to take us to the hostel which was nice. We had a Queen Bed Private Ensuite with a HOT SHOWER which functioned; the room was very basic. But the staff very nice and helpful with all our questions. There was a weird oddor in our room though; it smelled like pee. But our room was functional and had a TV. As far as Aguascalientes if i went there again i would stay here again. There are not a lot of chocies. I did like the free computer with internet on the 2nd floor and the socializing area.

It was a good value for aguas calientes

I don't know what everyone else was smoking, but Pirwa Hostel in Machu Picchu was terrible. Based on these reviews, we ended up booking Pirwa for our stay, and we were sorely disappointed. First of all, I have to rebuff the "hot water" comment. We didn't have any hot water for the duration of our stay. In addition, the beds are hard, and the pillows are like chicklets. I used my jacket as a pillow. On the plus side, their blankets were really warm (which is great when you're staying in Aguas Calientes during the winter), and they let us store our luggage there all day (and it was safe). Luckily, my friends and I were hiking Machu Picchu, so we didn't stay long. We're really not hard people to please; Pirwa was just plain terrible. I know the place is inexpensive, but that's not an excuse to be cheap.

My wife and I stayed here two nights in May 2010. We arrived late on the train from Ollantaytambo and a woman from the Hostal met us at the train station and led us to the hostal which was nice. Aguas Calientes isnt very big so almost everything is conveniently located but this hostel is sort of half way between the train station and the buses to Machu Picchu and right smack dab in the middle of all the pizza restaurants and souvenir shops you could ever want. Breakfast was included and it was the standard Peruvian fare of bread, jam, and tea. There was one computer with free internet and a small TV area where people can socialize. Our private room was basic but included its own TV and a bathroom which was nice. My only complaint about our stay is that in the two days there the staff did not empty the garbage bin from the bathroom once even though we left it in the middle of the room as a hint. It was full of used toilet paper because you cant flush it and our room started smelly quite badly.

We took the evening train from Ollantaytambo, and stayed just one night in Aguas Calientes, before our one day at Machu Picchu. We stayed in a double ensuite, for $15 pp, made reservations directly with the hostel by email. Though we spent just a short time in our room, it was a good value for the price we paid. It was the first "good" hot shower we had on our trip to Peru, so that's a definite plus. Overall, good location and price as a base for Machu Picchu.

The staff were very friendly and helpful. The hostel itself is fine, it could be better if they cleaned the public bathroom twice a day etc but overall it is fine and is just a money-making adventure for the owners. It is really cramped in the dorm rooms and there is nowhere to put your stuff. Its okay if you are getting up at 4am to go to machu pichu and then leaving later the same day. If you want to sleep after 4am it is almost impossible- when I was there a couple of tour groups got up at 4am and were having really boring and really loud conversations as though it was the middle of day even though we asked them to talk quietly. To sleep, a better option for the same price, with a view, is Hotel Caminantes (30 soles with private bathroom), yellow building down the train track past the Visa ATM machine. You wont meet people there but will sleep well after a trek, and can have a decent shower and some space.

Our stay was for one night and this hotel served its purpose well. It is in a great area for food and light shopping and is around many internet cafes. Rooms were old as is the hotel however the beds were great, warm and cozy with wool blankets on all of them. There are rooms with 1-5 beds, depending on what you want and there is hot water in the showers & nice plumbing in the toilets! YAY! You need ear plugs to sleep because you can hear a lot of noise from outside as well as from inside the hotel. No a/c or heat in the rooms but no one really stays in hostels anyway but only to get a good nights sleep and a shower before heading out of town again in the morning. It was perfect for us before heading back to Cusco. Easy to walk to from the train depot from Machu Picchu to Aguas Calientes. There is a computer with free internet in the lobby but there are also many internet cafes all over the area. Nice little spead of coffee, tea and breads in the morning too!

great hostel. Bit of a fuss over payment of room as we couldn't make it on our first booked night due to the train being cancelled. It got sorted and all was fine though.
Great location, near the hot springs and everywhere else in town. Friendly staff meet you from train. Nice breakfast and fab view of Andes from bedrooms. Town itself pretty small but I loved it.
Overall a great hostel, nice ensuite room with clean, tidy and quite spacious rooms.
