“Great place - just make sure you confirm your booking!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 31 July 2014

We had booked a double room, with balcony about two months in advance of our Inca Trail trek, having read good reviews here on TripAdvisor.

Having confirmed things by email, we assumed all was sorted. However, our arrival caused a look of panic and much hair tugging at reception...

We eventually were given an internal twin room, which was not what we were hoping for, but it was fine. The hostel itself was good - very good showers (powerful and hot) in our private bathroom, and everything was very clean. Walls are thin, so it is a bit noisy - the internal ventilation shaft carried quite a lot of noise from rooms above too.

So... we recommend it, it's good value, but do send an email before you travel to ensure they haven't forgotten you!

Really nice place with artistic and geological decoration. Hot shower with lots of pressure. Very nice bed and room by the water stream. Breakfast served very early if you're planning on walking early to Machu Picchu. Very accomodating staff. The hotel is adjacent to an amazing stone shop where the owner has is jewelry workshop on site. A few steps away from the thermal baths. Excellent value. I'll go back there and highly recommend this hotel.

Don't look any further for you place in Aguas Calientes. The room is spacious and clean. The beds soft. The showers hot.
Our room had a balcony looking over the river!
It was a bit of a splurge at $35 on our shoestring trip, but well worth it.
All I would say is I was disappointed they wanted to charge us for showers after our long day at Machu Picchu. We don't even get charged at the most basic $7 places.
Nevertheless, I recommend 100%
Their dog Tikka is adorable

After reading the recommendations here we booked a room for 1 night and it was amazing! We stayed in a beautiful private double room with a view to the river. Room was very clean and cosy, bed was awesome and shower was huge. Also breakfast was really good and the girls at the reception were really nice and helpful. They let us stay at the hostel after coming back from machupichu and were waiting for the train. Aguas Calientes in general is really expensive and this hostel is really a bargain for what it offers.

This hostel will go down in our memories as the most horrible experience of an otherwise incredible trip to Peru. I made reservations for a room with a double bed (what they call a matrimonial) via e-mail 1 month prior to arriving, and exchanged 2 confirmatory e-mails after that. When we arrived, we were non-chalantly shown to a room cramped with three twin beds. When we asked the staff what happened, we were told that a couple who had stayed the night before wanted to spend another night, and they had our matrimonial room. Of course the hostel had no other rooms available, so we got the twin beds. After a prolonged argument about what the point of a reservation was (I felt like I was in a Seinfeld episode), my boyfriend and I, exhausted and wanting to just go to sleep before waking up at 5 am to see Machu Picchu, just gave up and said we would keep the room.

Then, when we asked for our key, they told us that someone else had it, but they would bring it to us shortly. We waited, but when they never came back, we told them we were going to dinner and we'd get it on our way back in. But when we returned, not only did they not have our copy of the key, they had somehow lost the copy they had used to unlock the door for us in the first place. We finally got it out of them that it wasn't even an employee who had our copy either-- it was actually another guest at the hostel who got it by mistake! After struggling through every spare key on a massive keyring and failing to find one that worked, they finally suggested that we try to get in through a little inside window, which pushed open at a touch. When we became upset that our room could be accessed through a window and that someone else had a key, they seemed not to have a clue why this was a problem. At that point it was so late that we had no other options, and we just had to suck it up and stay-- feeling totally insecure and abused.

The rooms were clean and the shower was hot for the first five minutes. But if you think it's important that no one else has access to you or your stuff in the middle of the night, don't stay here, because the staff at this hostel don't seem to have a clue.

My two sons, my brother and I crammed a quick trip to see Machu Picchu after we had been to see a couple of World Cup matches in Rio. Because of our tight schedule we did the flight to Lima, flight to Cusco, cab to Ollantaytambo, train to Aguas Calientes route on a Thursday. Pretty brutal but we left enough time for it all to work out. Getting into Aguas Calientes at 21:00, a rep from El Mistico Hostal was there to meet us at the station. After a 3 minute or so walk to the hostal what a relief it was that we could drop our packs and rest for the night. We had the room with 4 single beds and an in-suite bath. Very clean and the staff, while only speaking Spanish (which one of could speak well enough), was great. Marco was a super guy. After seeing Machu Picchu and dinner on Friday we returned to the hostal to share a bottle of wine that we bought from a store a few openings down. Marco shared a glass with us and even brought us real wine glasses (we picked up plastic ones from the shop where we bought the wine). There are tons of places to stay in Aguas Calientes. If I get to go again, I'll be giving Marco a call. A little side note, we clogged the toilet in our room our first night (almost definitely our fault). The staff opened up another room that was empty for us to use their bathroom and then everything was fixed the next day by the time we returned. Good quick thinking on the staffs' part.

Room Tip: Our room was on the river with a little balcony. If you like the sound of rushing water like I do, i...

I paid $18 for a very clean room and bed, clean bathroom, and a simple breakfast. In a town of generally overpriced accommodation this place is an absolute bargain. The staff are all really friendly and I slept very well, with only the noise of the river immediately below my balcony. I'd stay again.
