We spent the past three weeks (in May 2012) traveling in South America - mostly Peru. The Sumaq Hotel, along with my tour company (Monica at Go2Peru.com) for the Cuzco, Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu portion of our trip pulled off the greatest event I could've imagined. The hotel staff (especially Alicia) arranged and executed a surprise Inca-style wedding for my wife. Incredible!! Down to (at my request of course) fake itineraries for the day to keep her in the dark.
I also have to say I spent three months prior to finding them in vain, trying to arrange for the wedding in Machu Picchu/Cuzco.
Stayed only one night, but it was such a classy hotel. As someone ealier wrote, hard to believe there was such a top-notch hotel - accommodations and restaurant - so deep in the interior of Peru. I hope no one builds next to them, because it's quietly situated at the end of the road headed up to Machu Picchu with a fabulous view of the river valley in both directions.
The restaurant was magnificant. Service - again, cannot say enough about the hospitality of the staff - everyone.
If I had known it would have been such a wonderful stay, I would have planned to stay there a couple days longer. A "can't-go-wrong" hotel if you want a memorable stay on your visit to Machu Picchu.

Room Tip: Try for an upper-floor room on the river side.

On the banks of the Urubamba River, a lovely hotel.. spacious room, nice balcony ( the river can be louder than the surf following a heavy rain... we found it to be delightful ), Lovely breakfast, best Pisco Sours in Peru ( even got a course on how to assemble one ). 3 block walk from the town of Aguas Calientes. Dinner 'presentation" was superb, the food itself was not up to that level, though quite tasty.. Staff was fantastic. Highly recommended.

Room Tip: Rooms on street side have balconies which open to the River, rear rooms open to Jungle...

Visited Machu Picchu in May 2012. Collette tours took us to Auga Caliente at the foot of Machu Picchu to a 5 star Hotel called Sumaq. The chef is trained in France and written up in gourmet magazines. I truely did not expect to fine such a fine hotel and resturant in the middle of Peru. We had a lovely, large room between the river and rail road track. No worries, the train does not come during the night. I would recommend this town and resturant to anyone, anytime. The people in the little town are friendly and fun to visit with. (Yes they speak English.)

Room Tip: Collette Tours picked the rooms. We were just lucky.

My wife and I just got back from a 10 day trip to Lima/Cuzco/Machu Picchu/Sacred Valley and loved every minute of it. All of the hotels we stayed in were due to recommendations from tripadvisor. Duo in Lima, Monasterio in Cuzco, Sumaq in Aguas Calientes/Machu Picchu, and Tambo del Inka in the Sacred Valley.

We both agree that by far the best of the 4 hotels was the Sumaq. The location is perfect. The food is great. But most importantly, the service is beyond exceptional. From the moment we arrive in the hotel we were treated with the utmost attention to detail. Erick in the restaurant was exceptionally attentive. The hotel's help with setting up our Machu Picchu tour, bus passes, etc. was extremely helpful.

I cannot say enough about this hotel, well worth it.

This was a great experience. The hotel is beautiful and very well located; we arranged to have the bus to Machu Picchu pick us up in front since they drive right by. The hotel is beautiful, the rooms are very spacious and modern, the views are great from the balcony. They had a wonderful dinner and just as great breakfast. Many choices! We returned to Cusco in the afternoon after spending the day in Machu Picchu and the staff took our bags to the train station so we didn't have to worry about that. Very helpful staff.
