“Lovely hotel, no screens on windows, gets hot with windows closed”
Reviewed 7 October 2012

An elegant, modern hotel with friendly staff, excellent English and very good service. They will send an employee to the Machu Picchu bus line to save you a spot on the bus and you can then board it right outside the front door- free (except for tip of course). Breakfast buffet looked like it might have been very complete but it hardly opened in time to catch the first bus to Machu Piicchu.
Free Pisco Sour, free bottled water and welcoming snack were nice, excellent dinner in restaurant was included but the costs of non included lunch was ridiculous. The biggest problem is there is no AC or fan in room and they tell you to leave windows closed due to insects. A hotel of this caliber could put window screens in.

Room Tip: as high as possible to get away from the bugs, the people and the noise at street level. First floor...

Beautiful hotel which included breakfast and dinner. The room was pleasantly decorated but no air conditioning. You were advised not to leave the window open at night because of bugs. A fan was delivered to our room which helped immensely. The restaurant opened at 5 am. Nice buffet. Dinner was included with our package. Great menu with alpaca as an option. It was great. No cuy however (guinea pig) About a 15 min walk from the train station, it was located along the Urubamba River.

Although this hotel gets high ratings for its service, welcome pisco sour, tea, etc, the real issue is that there are bed bugs! I had to abandon all luggage in order not to transport them home giving up my favorite pair of pants and a brand new top in process.

And the service should be over the top. The average Peruvian makes ~500 US dollars a year. So you are supporting a family with a one night stay!

Room Tip: Avoid this one at all costs!

Dear Mr LF:

Thank you for your comments, it help us to keep improving our services.
Regarding the complaint on what happened, we would have like to receive your complaint in our facilities in order to respond to you in person and change your room if you would required it and/or take the immediate actions as part of our guests service proceeding which is based on providing an impeccable service satisfying your expectations.

Likewise, we think it is important to say that in Peru there is no bed bugs outbreak, it is probable that you confused it with common mosquitoes that are typical on the rainy season. Being in Machu Picchu, mosquitoes are very usual in these seasons, but they are very easy to avoid by just closing the windows and using the insect layer on the bedside table of our rooms.
We restate our thanks for choosing Sumaq and we hope we can count with your visit soon.

Best regards

We stayed 2 nights in Sept. 2012.
The service was superb to put it mildly. Our every need was attended to, but not cloyingly or with snootiness. Upon check-in we were given a lemon-scented hot towel.
Dining in the restaurant we had the best meals we had in Peru. Brunch was excellent and included.
We cannot say enough good about this hotel. Everyone was very friendly and helpful.
I had the hot stone massage in their spa and it was mesmerizing. Honestly the best I have ever had.
What a wonderful respite from the crowds, train and bus rides, all the steps and climbing.
And the gorgeous rushing river right across the street was amazing.

We stayed at The Sumaq during our visit to Machu Picchu. The customer service at this hotel is 2nd to none. There was a representative waiting for us at the train station. So we gaven them our bags and leisurely walked to the hotel. Upon our arrival, we sat in the lobby and the check-in person came and sat with us while we checked in. They gave us hot towels to wash our hands and/or face, gave us tea and cookies and they knew what time we were arriving, so they had our rooms ready for us!

We wanted to take one of the 1st buses to Machu Picchu the next morning, so they arranged to have the bus come to hotel (rather than us having to walk to the bus stop and then wait in line - no biggie - but what a nice treat to be picked up)!

They also arranged to have our bags at the train station upon our return. GREAT SERVICE!!!!

We ate dinner at the restaurant, it was excellent.

Cons: The bathtub floor was hard to stand on. It was curved, not condusive to taking a shower.... The hotel is right in front of train tracks...so we had a great view of the Hiram Bingham train passing by :) During the night we heard 2 short trains pass by. By no means were these 2 things show stoppers, I would stay again in a heartbeat.

Room Tip: You could ask for a river room, they may be a bit quieter. Also, we had a triple, I had the rollawa...

This was our fourth leg in our 12 day Peruvian trip and after a 4 day trek on the Inca trail we were ready for a soft bed and a little pampering. After seeing all the good reviews from fellow trip advisor members, I booked us into a suite. At a later date, I emailed them seeing if they could put us in a room facing the river as it was our anniversary and also to let them know our luggage would be arriving days ahead of us and could they store it. Received a prompt reply that both requests were no problem and they looked forward to meeting us. Arrived in and was very impressed with the hotels decor. The lobby was beautiful and we filled out our registration forms while munching on homemade chips and a cocktail. Our room was on the second floor, facing the river and also with a view of Machu Picchu mountain. Really amazing. The room itself was very nice. Large bed with lots of pillows, 2 chairs, fireplace, and a large modern bathroom with a huge jacuzzi tub. The mini bar was stocked daily with plenty of water, sodas and gatorade. This was such a nice touch. Our reservation included breakfast and dinner daily as well as a cooking/cocktail demonstration which unfortunately we didn't use.
I can tell you the meals we had there were fantastic. The wait staff was professional and friendly and helped us through the menu selections. Even if you don't stay here, a visit to this restaurant is definitely worth it. The breakfast was fresh and delicious, with lots of choices and as I mentioned the dinners were spectacular. The voucher included one app, entree and dessert and also a complimentary cocktail. We were stuffed.
The lay out of the hotel is really nice. The lobby has plenty of room to gather as well as a great gift shop. The second floor in addition to guest rooms included the restaurant, and the third had a large lounge with a bar and computer area.
We returned back from a long afternoon and were greeted by the manager. He escorted us to our room and opened it. The room was dimmed, candles lit, fresh flowers, music playing, swans and rosebuds on the bed. On our nightstand was a basket of delicious cookies and candies. We were very touched they had remembered our anniversary and had gone to all this effort for us. Incredible.
Upon check out we were told they would bring our bags to the train station and direct us where to get on the train. Another great customer service touch. The hotels in the States could take a lesson from the Sumaq.
We did not experience any noise issues from the buses or trains as I have read, but we do travel with a small white noise device which comes in handy. And the trains do run at all hours it seems so this might be a good investment.
Can't wait to return to Peru and the Sumaq. Please feel free to email me if you have any other questions.

Room Tip: Second floor room facing the river. The restaurant is also on this level.

Stayed here for one night, after spending an entire morning hiking around Machu Picchu. Upon my arrival, I was met with a welcome drink and a hot towel, to wash away the dust. Check in was quick and personable. The rooms were clean and modern, as is the bathroom. All of the staff were quality people, helping me in anyway I asked.

The location of the hotel couldn't be beat either. An uphill slog to the main area, yet I liked the fact it was far enough away from there, to not hear any of the night noise.

If you can afford it, this is the place to stay. It is quite pricey, yet worth every dime.
