If you were thinking..."I'm in Peru, why would I pay this price" Well think about spending a little more to stay at a hotel that knows the true meaning of service. After a long hike it will be well worth it!! We were met at the train by a really nice gentleman who walked us to the hotel, stopping along the way to allow me to buy bus tickets. We were served delicious drinks and snacks while we checked in, all the hotel events were explained to us. The rooms were spotless and very well kept - bathroom giant and all new. Cozy sheets.
One of the most surprising things was the dinner we had in the dining room. It was the best meal of our trip! In comparison we ate at a super expensive - what was touted as the BEST Peruvian restaurant in Cuszco with a pre-fix menu (I wouldn't pay that in the US) and it didn't come close to comparing with the meal we had at Sumaq which was unbelievably included in our room rate. We, as you can see, has a fantastically experience here and I was so glad that I paid the little extra to stay - the icing on the cake of our tip!

My partner and I stayed at the Sumaq following an Inca trail hike, so we were overjoyed when it turned out to be the very modern looking first stop on the bus that takes you down the mountain from Machu Picchu! We were greeted with refreshments at reception whilst checking in, and I can honestly say it felt like the best shower I have ever had!

We had a riverfront room on the 4th floor, which was an ideal situation as we had a little balcony overlooking the river, yet managed to avoid the noise of buses running past (they start at 5:30). On the room the bed was very confortable, and very clean, I only wish we could have had some air con, but this is rural Peru and we had exceptionally unusual warm weather for November. The hotel staff were very accomodating though and brought up a portable fan in the middle of the night. Food in the restaurant was excellent, the town has many rubbishy tourist spots so this place really was worth the money, and breakfast starts at 5am, so good if you are trying to catch the sunrise.

All in all I would recommend this place for people wanting some creature comforts and a good meal.

Room Tip: Riverview, as high up as possible

This was our 2nd choice hotel as we had wanted to stay at the Inkaterra but it was fully booked. I'm glad it was! This hotel is in a great position and we had a lovely room on the river side. The bathroom was very big and very clean, except for the sealant around the bath which was quite mouldy.
The next morning I was very poorly with food poisoning which I am sure I contracted at our lunch venue the previous day. Although check out was 10am, reception staff said I could stay as long as I needed, which was until 1pm, with no extra charge.
I would certainly recommend this hotel.

First of all, the town of Agua Calientes is extremely small with an abundance of Hostels... so hotels catering to higher end travelers are rare and VERY expensive.
That being said, we spent the night in town so we could have a second day at Machu Picchu and it was the best decision we could have made. Getting up early the next day to beat the crowds was awesome and worth the overnight stay. The hotel, although a five star (whatever that means in Agua Calientes) is very nice and comfortable. Is it a five star that you would get in Europe or New york? NO! But it's very nice... and did I mention, very expensive!
My advice is, if you can afford it, stay at the Sumaq (or one of the other nicer hotels... i.e. Inkaterra) If you can't or don't want to spend the money, try an alternative means of accommodations. But if you take away anything from this... stay the night! Visit Machu Picchu a second day. You'll probably never go there again. It's worth the extra day to spend time in the magnificent Incan ruins!

Staff from Sumaq met us at the train station, took our luggage and escorted us down to the hotel where we were welcomed with drinks and a snack. They reviewed our itinerary, making sure there were no mistakes and providing suggested times of departure for our excursions to the Citadel and Wayna Picchu mountain. Our room was on the river side of the hotel. We could open the doors to our balcony and hear the roar of the river!! The room was cleaned and very well maintained. Sumaq sent "runners" up to hold spots on the bus to Machu Picchu so we did not have to stand in line. The bus picked us up and dropped us back right at the front door to the hotel....a great perk, especially if you want to take the first bus in the morning!! Sumaq provided us with an amazing private guide both days, Roberto Martinez. He was so knowledgeable about the region and its history. He also knew exactly where to go to avoid crowds and get the best view. He went at our pace which was fast and furious, but stopping frequently for photo opportunities. We were able to enjoy the restaurant for dinner one night. The quality and selection were excellent!! If I ever make it back to Machu Picchu, I will most certainly stay again at Sumaq and recommend it to anyone who is traveling to the area.

Room Tip: We enjoyed the river side rooms for the soothing sound of the roaring river.

What a beautiful hotel. From the reception area to the rooms to the dining area and bar-all are beautifully decorated and make you feel at home. The staff speak English really well and are very helpful. The beds are comfortable and a God sent after a long day on Macchu Picchu.

What was a real surprise was the quality of food served in the restaurant. Our dinner was included and so glad we tried it. It was by far the best food we ate in the entire Peru. The presentation is amazing and the taste-WOW!

We were able to leave our bags in storage until our train collected us in the afternoon.
