“Sumaq Machu Picchu”
Reviewed 5 January 2009

The Sumaq Machu Picchu is new. The staff was very helpful. They had someone buy our entry tickets to Machu Picchu and our bus tickets. They had the bus early in the morning stop at the front door of the hotel so we did not have to wait in the bus line. It is a bit expensive, but really lovely and dinner and breakfast are included.

Sumaq is a beautiful and modern hotel. Initially, we couldn't decide between Machu Picchu Sanctuary Lodge or Sumaq, and we were very glad we chose Sumaq (we actually toured MP Sancturary Lodge to confirm our decision). Initially, after check in we ran into a couple of customer service issues, but once we made management ( Anibal Clavijo Begazo) aware of the issues, all concerns were addressed. Not only that, Sumaq management went above and beyond to ensure that we had a pleasant rest of our stay.

Our family of 5 stayed one night at the Sumaq. After a long day hiking the Inca Trail(awesome), it was great to have such a nice retreat in the somewhat chaotic town of Aquas Caliente. We entered the property at 6:00 in the evening and left at 6:00am the next day. The rooms, service and food were all excellent. The only issue is cost. After traveling in Peru where we consistently found great properties for $100/night, paying $350-400/night was hard to feel like we got the value ($5 small can of Pringles in the minibar and $5 beers made it feel like we were in Hawaii...). We only chose this due to what we perceived as a lack of other alternatives in Aguas Caliente. My guess if one of the $100 properties gets their act together (not currently the state according to the consistently negative reviews of the Aguas hotels), then that would be the choice.
We probably wouldn't stay there again but if you have the cash, you might feel like it is a place in heaven after visiting the heavenly MP.

After "roughing it" in very basic accommodation for most of our trip, this was our oasis.

Based on recommendations on Trip Advisor we asked for a room facing the river. I would do the same again. I found it relaxing to hear the water rumbling outside.

Room
The bathroom was spotlessly clean with an abundance of HOT WATER! Robes and slippers and turn down service are included. Our room had a jacuzzi tub which was excellent after a day exploring MP. Comfy beds with fluffy pillows, TV, and bar fridge which doesn't have sensors so you can put your own supplies in there too.

Food
The food in the restaurant is beautifully presented. Only downside is that if you are on full board you get the same menu for lunch and dinner. On our second night they gave us an alternate menu to choose from which we were grateful for, but many of the sauces and presentation styles were similar. Most people, it seems, stay for 1 night.

Breakfast was the best we had in Peru. Hot food, eggs, fruit, cereal, pastries, ham, cheese etc etc. Fabulous.

Spa
We both had a 90 minute Aqlla massage which we found very relaxing. The spa was clean and comparable to others I have visited in North America and Europe.

Rating
I'm giving this a 4* not a 5 because I think it is overpriced. However, the reason is you're in the Aguas Calientes tourist trap. All the hotels of this quality are overpriced, but you simply have to pay up or stay somewhere much worse (see my review of Gringo BIlls!!)

Tip: Rather than booking with the hotel direct, try bidding at Luxury Link. They have a 2 night package which is a good deal less than the regular price and includes cocktails and a massage.

This hotel is overrated. While it calls itself a 4 or 5 star hotel; I'd give it 3 stars, tops. After spending $815 for one night at the Sanctuary Lodge at the gate to Macchu Picchu, this hotel (while costing us "only" $450+) paled by comparison. The room was fine and the bed comfy; but the food in the restaurant was nothing special; though the service was very good. What threw me a bit, was being charged $6 or $7 for a bottle of water with dinner, even though meals were included. ALL drinks were extra, not just premium liquor. The staff was nice and the location okay; but not worth the money; even after spenidng so much more at the Sanctuary Lodge.

We stayed there one night as part of a tour. They were very accommodating, anxious to please, and the place was lovely. When we left early to try to get to Machu Picchu at sunrise, they arranged an early breakfast for us. They also allowed us to use a room after we had checked out, prior to our taking the train back to Ollantaytambo. If you're visiting Machu Picchu and want to stay in a lovely place, this is the spot.

I stayed at the Sumaq Macchu Picchu in August, 2008. This hotel offered some of the best service I have ever found. I have trouble walking, and the managment arranged employees to help me climb the ruins, and even helped pick me up at the train station. The food was excellent, and the room was clean and in good condition. I highly recommend this hotel.
