Hotel Jezera
Reviewed 20 July 2007

We turned up to Hotel Jezero on the day and were lucky that they had a free room, albeit for only one night. The double room we stayed in cost 56 euros per night, including breakfast but not dinner. It was very simple, but with a balcony with an amazing view of the mountains. The black lake was an easy 20 minute walk away.

The next night in Zabljak we stayed in an apartment of higher standard than the hotel room about 1km out of town. This was owned by a local family along with a campsite. This apartment was only 20 euros a night, with private bathroom, kitchenette etc. so I would recommend this over a hotel, unless you are desperate to have breakfast provided! This was also 20 minutes walk from the lake, although coming from a different direction (not too sure on this because we didn't do the walk from here!).

It must be said that the decoration in the hotel is dreary and old. However......

The location of the Jezera is fantastic, with stunning mountain views and easy walking access to the lakes and peaks. The hotel was almost full with groups and a conference when we turned up on spec and we were shown, apologetically, to a room which we were told was not good. It was standard OK hotel size, fantastic view but a bit depressing. By chance, we asked about suites/apartments and were shown a huge room, double bed (very comfortable), single bed, large sitting area with two sofas, two balconies ....and throws to reduce the overall brown dreariness of the hotel. All for about £10 more than the room per night - totalling about £45 per suite per night, with half board (for two) thrown in if one booked three nights or more.

The buffet dinner was fairly solid: mainly chunks of meat, some in a good gravy or sauce, but also one or two types of fish and perhaps a stuffed pepper or similar for vegetarians. Mixed, very well done veg, but also simple salad. Began to quite like it, but if you're into fresh veg, you'd have a problem. Interesting (to a Western European), perfectly adequate breakfast - good to fill up on before walking in the mountains.

The indoor swimming pool (with mountain views) is good-sized and we had it to ourselves most evenings.

The terrace was a fabulous area to sit or have evening drinks, in very cmfortable chairs, staring at the mountains.

Staff were friendly and helpful and tried to provide good service, but, I suspect had limited training. Our lack of Serbian and their lack of English meant it sometimes took much ingenuity to convey what we needed. However, a receptionist who spoke good English would sort things out .

I would recommend the hotel (especially a suite) to those who are more into atmosphere than style, into decent, if not fancy, food and into mountains. My above average rating reflects the amazingly good value.

To be honest most people would probably give this hotel 1 star.

We walked in to a foyer full of smokers and a couple of school parties. The place appeared not to have been decorated for 20+ years. There were only net curtains in the windows which meant you couldn't block out the light. It wasn't particularly sound proofed. There were windows above the doors - although there was a second door (also with a window) so there was no problem with privacy. In short - it was very similar to a rather rough youth hostel.

So why 3 stars? It was euro30 per night per person for bed, breakfast and evening meal. The breakfast was very acceptable and the evening meal was a substantial buffet with several different types of cooked meats (The dinding room is non-smoking). The situation is perfect for walking to the 'double lake' and any other walks you fancy (although the canyon is too far to walk - and signposts/directions are non-existent) and the woman at reception could not have been more helpful.

The place was fully booked every night so I wouldn't turn up on spec. But visit while the place is still in a natural state - before it gets spoilt.

Oh yes - one other thing. Don't exchange money if you enter through Serbia - they will not accept that currency in the town - the euro is used (In fact they will not even exchange the Serbian currency in the bank or post office)
