I loved this place so much. We went first thing in the morning right when it opened. Observing the pilgrims making offerings, praying and meditating before those beautiful bodhi trees was a wonderful and awe-inspiring sight. It is a busy spot but so peaceful. Definitely worth the trip!

Visited as part of our day tour of Anuradhapura city. No fee for tourists but 25 rupees for leaving our shoes (a tiny sum of money which I do not resent) and we were too gullible to avoid buying flowers to offer to the Buddha but this is clearly a holy site for practising Buddhists and we were happy to leave flowers. We were reminded by our guide to avoid being photographed with our backsides to Buddha as this is considered to be offensive but Buddhist worshippers were happy to photograph us with a side on view. Difficult to see much of the Bodhi tree but glad we visited.

Ancient city is amazing, $25 entry. Can get a tuc tuc anywhere in the new town and do the ancient city in a couple of hours or much cheaper way is to rent a bicycle for the day. It took me almost a whole day to see all the sites in old the city by bicycle ask your hotel for a map. I stayed in Melbourne Hotel, cheap, nice, they have bicycles, see review on Melbourne Hotel. List and brief review of the sights I went to in The Ancient city:

Bodhi Tree Temple (The Sri Maha Bodhiya), this was the main thing I wanted to see, bit dissapointing, you can not get close to the tree, big wall around it. it is not possible to drive up to the temple, and one must go through a metal detector before entering the complex. Shoes can be left near the entrance. It is polite to leave a tip.
Ruwanwelisaya: the oldest and most largest stupa at Anuradhapura, has , been fully restored, painted white, and is currently a centre of worship.
The Archaeolgy Museum, interesting, ask at the entrance for a museum guide, it is free. Showcases many of the artifacts found at the site
The Folk Museum: Showcases the archaeology of Anuradhapura from a more folk perspective.
Jetavana: Large stupa
The Citadel: This was the secular centre of the city.
The Moonstone. This moonstone is of particular note, for its size and impressive decoration.

A must see, if only to marvel at its age and the attention lavished upon it. Quite crowded even in low season, and I did feel conscious that this is a place for religious observance rather than just visiting as a tourist.

This is the known oldest tree of religious value in the whole world & worshipped by many people from all over the world, its of immense religious value to Buddhists.
The temple & the surrounding areas are very clean & well kept since my last visit, which is a pleasure.
Please be aware f the monkeys for people who have not visited this place before, also to be appropriately dressed, better in covered white clothes as a a respect to this great religion.
A must visit for all Buddhists in the world.
