“Anniversary Break”

The hotel itself I think is very good. The bathrooms have a beautiful view of the lake. The drive up to the hotel and its surroundings gives you a good view of the lake and Sigirya Rock in the distance.

The food quality is also very good and they serve continental breakfast buffet in the morning which for me is a winner.

We stayed in the Dambulla wing and that was about only the biggest problem - the rooms are afar away from the restaurants, reception, activity area, spas and the infinity pool. Apart from that, the hotel is simply fabulous. The bathrooms have a beautiful view of the lake. Though the downside is that the rooms are very small. Infinity pool is gorgeous. The food quality is also quite good and the chefs were kind enough to prepare special vegetarian dishes for us.

Room Tip: Take a room in the non-Dambulla wing - it is where most of the resort activities are present.

DO NOT STAY HERE! IT IS A TOTAL CON!

This is the first time I have felt compelled to write a review of a hotel online. A seasoned traveller and long time reader of TA, I am writing this out of sheer sense of duty to stop others being conned by this horrible establishment.

Please be clear - this review is for the KANDALAMA LAKE RESORT, not the Kandalama hotel or any of the other lake resorts in the area with similar sounding names. My wife and I booked this place based on the positive reviews on TA. After spending 2 horrible nights here (we had actually booked 3 but decided to escape early), we now realise that many of the reviews here are actually talking about totally different resorts, which are no doubt much better than this mess.

We spent 60 USD a night (not cheap for Sri Lanka) so were expecting at least a clean and comfortable room where we could relax by the lake. How wrong we were.

Where do I start....

CHALET

The room was dirty, damp and run-down mess. The bed sheets, pillows and towels provided were filthy and looked like they had not been washed in weeks. The bathroom was equipped with a toilet with a broken flush, a shower that barely worked, and a set of mouldy rugs to cover the sticky and stained floor tiles. There was no maid service during our stay.

The place was utterly depressing and we felt like leaving as soon as we stepped in. Unfortunately it was a festival weekend in Dambulla and all places in the area were booked up. We therefore sucked it up and stayed as we wanted a base from which to explore the cultural triangle. Despite this, we still decided to leave the place one day early after I developed an irritating rash on my arm on the 2nd night.

Our only sanctuary was the veranda where there were a couple of seats. We spent the majority of our 2 evenings there to escape the horrors of the room until we HAD to return to sleep.

RESTAURANT

On seeing the hygiene of the room, we decided against eating at the deserted restaurant. We did have a look at the lunch/dinner menu though, which oddly had no prices listed, and as the 2 staff had hardly any knowledge of English, there was no way of querying about the meals or having any type of question/request regarding the hotel answered whatsoever. We did struggle through one breakfast (as it was included in the room rate), which comprised a pile of stiff toast served with butter and jam. It was pretty much inedible.

MANAGEMENT

The only staff we saw on site the hole time were 2 very young looking teenage boys who seemed to be in charge of everything. Very pleasant guys with big smiles and willing to help where possible, however their level of English and obvious lack of training meant they were pretty much unequipped to deal with the operations of a hotel and restaurant. On querying where the manager/owner of the property was, they managed to explain that he was in Colombo on business.

LOCATION

The only positive to the hotel was its location on Kandalama lake, which was beautiful. There is so much potential for this to be a great place but it seems that the management does not care about the property and is happy with the constant flow of travellers coming in based on the good reviews on TA. We saw many guests arriving at the hotel and then leaving the same day in disgust so I know we are not the only people disappointed with their stay. I only hope others can contribute their review too to give the Kandamala Lake Resort the kick up the back-side it deserves.

I have been to this hotel a few times before and once again its one of the best hotels in Sri Lanka. What I like about this hotel is the drive up to the hotel and its surroundings. Again we went there when there were hardly any guests so the buffets were not full spread but they did put out good food. The desserts were great. And a big thank you to Chef Kasim who provided us with breakfast packs when we left early to climb Sigiriya and also when we went on Safari. Thanks chef - you did an awesome job - and to the staff a big thank you as well (specially room service guys) the staff at the restaurant can be a bit more attentive.

Room Tip: Sigiriya wing and the top floors. If possible a suite.

We re-visit this hotel after 7 year and we were delighted that it remains so wonderful. This is a unique experience living in the heart of the jungle - so expect it to be different. The hotel remains in a good state of decoration and as ever the staff are wonderful, smiling, helpful people. This is one place we will always be happy to recommend and if we are lucky, return to ourselves.

Room Tip: As far as I know all rooms are unique - no one over looks you. You can shower without any curtain. O...

Shockingly bad New Years party. Avoid at all costs. Local band sings country-western favourite (Willy Nelson!), Disney characters on the dance floors added a further surreal element, maddening strobe lights, ...and the food. Grotesque amounts of it! Made one want to abstain altogether. From sushi to sachertorte...less is more. If you are not staying at the hotel, the dinner cost is $150 per person. Ridiculous. Beyond that little disaster, this was my third time at the hotel which is nice and has a Roger Moore era chic to it. Big hotel, dark rooms, small pool but stunning views. Beds are just next to the halls so you may hear doors banging which does not make for a peaceful sleep at times.

Room Tip: Avoid rooms at the far ends which are shaded by the tree branches and offer little in terms of views
